100 Per Cent Renewables By 2025

100 per cent renewables by 2025: Grid operator pushes clean energy revolution

July 13, 2021
The Age

Australia’s energy market operator has set an ambitious target for the country to surge ahead of the rest of the world with an electrical grid ready to handle 100 per cent renewable energy by 2025.   Smiley

The operator’s new chief executive, Daniel Westerman, will use his first public address to outline the goal for a big increase in investment and collaboration to wean the power market further away from coal and prepare for a clean energy revolution.   Smiley

The head of Australia’s coal-dominated power grid is making preparations to handle 100 per cent renewable energy by 2025.

Increased output from wind, large-scale and rooftop solar, which cannot generate power unless it’s sunny or windy, is complicating the grid operator’s job of supplying power to consumers, while the loss of the continuous power traditionally provided by coal and gas could pose risks to the reliability of the network.

Mr Westerman said stronger transmission infrastructure, big batteries, pumped hydro and gas plants providing on-demand energy would be vital to ensuring a smooth transition. However, if successful, Mr Westerman says the east-coast electricity grid, which is usually powered 70 per cent by coal, should be able to handle 100 per cent renewable energy at a single moment in time by 2025.

“There are already points in time when renewable energy contributes to more than half of all electricity supply,” he will say in a speech to be delivered at a Committee for Economic Development of Australia event in Melbourne on Wednesday.

Falling cost of renewables creates coal test for federal government
“That puts us at the front of the pack for renewables penetration for any large grid in the world.”

Mr Westerman, who took over as head of the Australian Energy Market Operator two months ago, said the accelerating pace of change in Australia had prompted him to set the bold target and seek to harness capabilities and experience across the industry through collaboration.

Mr Westerman insists the push is necessary to cater for a rapid influx of wind and solar farms and rooftop solar panels nationwide as more coal-fired power stations close down.

Power grid can be rid of coal ‘without price rises, outages’
“This must be our goal not because of personal ambition, politics or ideology, but because we know this is where we’re headed,” he says.

Previously, the most ambitious forecast from the Australian Energy Market Operator stated that the grid may be able to cope with 75 per cent renewables by 2025.

The operator’s increasing ambition is at odds with the views of some sections of the Morrison government; senior members of the Nationals, including Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce, are pushing the case for public investment in new coal power.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says he wants to reach net-zero carbon emissions as soon as possible and preferably by 2050, but is yet to commit to a deadline.

As power generation accounts for around 30 per cent of the Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions, increasing renewable power would make a major difference to Australia’s greenhouse gas budget.

A report by the Grattan Institute think tank earlier this year found the national energy market could be rid of coal entirely within the next 20 years without blackouts and price spikes. But it also warned that rushing to 100 per cent renewable energy would be prohibitively expensive given the need to build enough dispatchable power capacity to plug gaps in peak-usage periods.

Under the least-cost approach to eliminating coal, the Grattan Institute’s Tony Wood said gas would continue to play a “critical back-up role” for renewable energy but not an expanded one.

That's not fair. He did say "However, if successful, Mr Westerman says the east-coast electricity grid, which is usually powered 70 per cent by coal, should be able to handle 100 per cent renewable energy at a single moment in time by 2025"

One microsecond is a single moment of time. Of course what he doesn't say is what happens when it is not successful. Grin Grin Grin

I am totally in favour of renewable energy, but people make wild claims in the media all the time. Remember how Gupta was going to create a renaissance in the Australian steel industry? He was going to use renewables to power his furnaces. Too good to be true. He's a crook.

And if I may ask, why not just insert links to the references instead of typing that stuff out?

Australia's energy production in 2019 was - 19711 petajoules.
https://www.energy.gov.au/data/australian-energy-production-fuel-type

That converts to 5,475,000 Gigawatt Hours.

Renewables were 55,500 GWh. Hydro was 5% of that mix.

https://www.energy.gov.au/publications/australian-energy-statistics-table-o-elec...

So in the 6 years  from 2019 renewables need to increase by about 100 fold.

6 years is 72 months. So we will have to increase renewables by about 77.7GWh per month. And not nameplate capacity, but with capacity factor of about 0.3 - over 200GWh per month. So the time frame is not feasible. And the cost?

Solar costs $45 per MWh.

Wind turbine - about $50 per Mwh

And that doesn't address the intermittency issue. How many days backup is required to account for wind drought/overcast conditions. See the tab under large scale battery which doesn't address how much we need but future potential problems.

Load up Australia with windy mills, they are magnificent and the wind is always blowing somewhere. with cooper basin gas and solar as backup we should be laughing.

Micheal Moore, a member of the radical left has already exposed renewables as a money making scam for big corporations.

its nothing to do with the environment.

have a look at how much water is needed to mine the ingredients for batteries
