Yes on Long weekends we would play night cricket with a white ball (batsman was under the light pole in the middle of the park) and then go to the midnight horror movie. I dipped the old cricket ball in a tin of white paint after each game, this was a few years before night cricket and the white ball was a thing.

Grease was followed by Star Wars. No prize for guessing who wanted to see which. (Early 1978).

We used to pack loads of people in our big van, decked out with a 2-seater couch, mattress and camp chairs. You'd pay by the car load so between us, it cost us nothing. We'd just sprawl about and watch any old crap they played us.

But first memories, my parents took us to see Jabberwocky playing with The Life Of Brian. I was too young to get most of the jokes but i still remember loving it.

Was the way to go out to see movies with car load of peeps.
Even on freezing cold nights. And windscreens constantly fogging.
Intermission …. then a rush to get food/drink from store there!
And…. When it was DLS…. Seemed like ages before night finally arrived so movie could start.
And, a time I recall I went to loo, in the dark… on way back…couldn’t find where the car was!
The last drive in movie we saw when the kids were younger… was The Jetsons movie.
We’ve come a long way from sitting in a car, outside in the night, to watch a movie …. Now in comfort at home with any chosen movie on Netflix etc.

But… there is still a novel drive in operable…at Dromana Drive in…

I used to go in my old station wagon with the old sponge matress in the back. Open up the back and relax with the girlfriend watching the movie. My youngest drove all the way to Greta several months ago to see three movies at the Greta drive in. Dont think Id enjoy it these days.

My parents live in Kawana, right near where the old drive-in was located. I could see the screen quite well from my parents' place. And if I could tune in the radio correctly to get the sound, I could watch a free movie from the veranda. But, that was only years later when I found this out.

They tore up the drive-in after it was found that Birch Carroll and Coyle was more popular as a cinema. Then the drive-in was bordered by Carara Drive and filled in with a few short streets complete with cul-de-sacs. The entrance to the drive-in was filled with a dozen rental houses blocked together and a security fence that I walk by each night and pay no attention.

I remember nights were filled by cars backing up Richardson Road waiting to get in to the drive-in. The drive-in might have taken second place to the cinema. But, it sure kept the streets blocked on Friday nights.

I remember one Exercise when we, in the rear-party decided to take the night off and so we trotted off to the local drive in our 5 ton truck. We all had camp chairs in the back with an eskie of cold ones and so we camped out and watched the movies. Occasionally we'd peek over the sides and see various shenanigans occurring in the cars. At one point two pairs of feet appeared out of a window. I wonder what that couple were doing? Must have been a hard way to watch the movie. Wink
