BBC - Politics above facts
Jul 3rd, 2021 at 4:56pm

The BBC has removed an educational page laying out the “benefits” of climate change after a furious online reaction.

BBC Bitesize, its website for schoolchildren, claimed warmer temperatures “could lead to healthier outdoor lifestyles” and that a benefit of climate change could mean easier access to oil in Alaska and Siberia.

Other apparent benefits highlighted by the BBC included the ability to one day grow more crops in Siberia, new shipping routes created by melting ice, and more tourist destinations.

After a backlash from climate experts and campaigners, including the Guardian writer George Monbiot, the page, aimed at year 10 students, was amended to only include the negative impacts of climate change.

Monbiot tweeted: “This is what @bbcbitesize is teaching our children about climate breakdown. I’m sorry, but it’s an absolute disgrace. You could come away thinking: ‘on balance, it sounds pretty good’.”

Stuart Lock, the chief executive of Advantage Schools trust in Bedford, said the advice was “flat wrong, doesn’t align with the national curriculum or exam specs, and needs reconsidering”.

“Climate change isn’t a ‘both sides’ argument,” he added.

Extinction Rebellion’s south-east group said: “GCSE students, young people, those facing future disasters, deserve better than to be judged on questions which warp and distort the truth.”

The BBC said it had “reviewed the page and are amending the content to be in line with current curricula”. It is not clear when the Bitesize page was first published.

The guide was written for children studying for their GCSE geography exams. Many have been relying more on it during the pandemic as schools were closed, and pupils who have to isolate are still learning and revising from home. Bitesize has expanded its output to assist home learning.

The exam board Eduqas said the information was not taken from its curriculum, adding: “Within our GCSE geography specifications, we examine the consequences of climate change and its respective impact on our planet.

“As part of our courses, we also ask students to explore opposing attitudes to climate change. However, we do not advocate a positive viewpoint on this topic.

“The resources developed by BBC Bitesize were created without any involvement from our geography team, therefore do not accurately reflect the content of our specifications.”

In 2018, the BBC took a public stance on climate change, saying “man-made climate change exists”, adding that its journalists should be aware of “false balance”.

Scotland’s exam board recently came under fire from the Scottish Green party for teaching the “positives” of climate change. The Scottish Qualifications Authority geography course gave benefits of climate change such as “increased tourism to more northerly latitudes” and “improved crop yields”.

The political party said it was “deeply inappropriate” for the SQA to specify the pros and cons should be given equal consideration.

The SQA responded: “Analysing and evaluating a variety of views is essential to critical thinking.”

So now apparenlty there are no benefits to climate change.

The BBC climate has been reduced from 7 pages to 4 pages.

"Positive impacts of a warmer global climate could include:

warmer temperatures and increased CO2 levels, leading to more vigorous plant growth

some animals and plants could benefit and flourish in a changing climate

new shipping routes, such as the Northwest passage, would become available

more resources, such as oil, becoming available in places such as Alaska and Siberia when the ice melts

energy consumption decreasing due to a warmer climate

longer growing season leading to a higher yields in current farming areas

frozen regions, such as Canada and Siberia, could be able to grow crops new tourist destinations becoming available"

ability to one day grow more crops in Siberia

More than offset by the inability to grow crops in the worlds current bread basket countries let alone the turn around time to relocate, regear and produce food in alternate locations in a staggered staged in viability to do so. Could be looking at 20 ,40 or more years with the current crop locations unviable with the new locations also undetermined or consistent.

With virtually nothing to ship ?

Quote:
more tourist destinations

Possibly different destinations. More would be lost than gained.

For the Record, its Global Warming. The use of the term Climate Change was introduced by the re-election campaign of George W. Bush, because it sounded natural and less threatening than GLOBAL WARMING. Man-made greenhouse gasses are killing the Great Barrier Reef, and causing wider oscillations in weather patterns - FACTS.

Please explain how man-made GHG's are killing the GBR. CO2 sequestration has been going on, as far as man is concerned, forever. That is of course when it isn't outgassing CO2.

Are you trying to tell us the ocean can distinguish between natural ad man-made GHG's. Roll Eyes

So what you are saying is that any warming, even that below the Roman, Minoan, Holocene Optimum, which it is at present, has no benefits?

During each of those periods mankind had great periods of productivity, far more so than the cooler periods. During the cooler periods man has had to spend more time and resources on keeping warm.

We know it has been warmer than now by tree stumps discovered above the current treeline, discoveries of old Roman mines discovered as glaciers retreat. Those glaciers had to have advanced to cover them for them to retreat.

But of course the writer was from the BBC.

no, i'm saying that losing potentially tens of thousands of acres of current food baskets in order to gain a thousand previously unusable acres, or gaining a couple of new tourist destinations whilst losing hundreds of others,  is not a benefit.

Perhaps you have link for that?  Or perhaps you deny the earth is greening, even the Sahel and the Sahara.

"The United Nations (U.N.) has issued an urgent warning about the Sahara Desert, which is in the process of “greening” apparently due to climate change."

I guess they want the Sahara to remain a desert.

Perhaps you can show where these tens of thousand of acres under threat are. I may be able to buy them cheap. Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

Young people are being brainwashed, anything that goes against the narrative is edited as Lee has shown.

Now Johnny wake up dear, the food baskets all over the Earth are being bought up by the oligarchy.

Have a look at how much food producing land the Bill and Melinda gates foundation has bought up.

If there is a short supply it wont be because of climate change.

You might have to beg on your knees to bill gates for a bowl of rice.

So wake the f@rk up.......!!!!

Do you know what the population of the Sahara is or its current crop harvest ?

You could see millions dying waiting for the decades needed for the Sahara to become either habitable or crop productive.

"Being a desert, many people would not assume the Sahara desert produces a healthy crop of edible plants. Nevertheless, the Sahara desert is home to several species of plants that nourish its residents, and even provide a lucrative business option. The plants in the Sahara are a staple in the day-to-day lives and diets of the Sahara populace. There are five plants in particular that are most frequently cultivated and eaten.

The first of these plants is the orange tree. Most North Americans think of Florida and California when it comes to the orange crop, even though the Sahara desert offers plenty of its own oranges in its dry, hot landscape. The trees grow particularly well along the coast of the Nile and in various other areas in the Sahara that have an oasis.

A heavily used herb in American cuisine is thyme, which thrives naturally in the Sahara, as well as several additional herbs. Thyme in particular is considered food to many of the animals that inhabit the Sahara desert, while the locals cultivate thyme to add flavor to their meals.

Figs are also grown in the Sahara desert. While it may be difficult to picture these soft, tasty fruits growing in desert environments, figs play a significant role in the diet of Sahara residents and have done so for ages.

Another fruit native to Africa and the Sahara desert is the magaria. Magaria are fruit similar in size to the cherry. They are a muted brown color and are typically dried to use in cake batter.

While the olive tree will often make one think of Italian olive groves, this plant is also native to the Sahara desert, growing best in many areas bordering the Nile. It is a very useful and vital plant to the desert's ecosystem as well as its business structure, as the olive tree is a profitable resource.

The term Sahara desert plants typically brings to mind thoughts of the cacti that also populate the area, or even the unusual gourds that cannot be eaten, but help to heal bites from a scorpion. As far as Sahara residents go, however, the most vital vegetation of the whole area are the plants consumed daily as food."

Ah the old "could see".      So you don't have a link to your previous post. Thought so. You just "know" things. Wink

Lee and Ajax - facts will get you nowhere. You are Emotionally Incorrect, that's  all that matters to your interlocutors.

You are arguing with economically comfortable retirees who have gone through life avoiding critical reflection like the plague  and who have no ability or interest in starting to think now.

There is NO fact that you can present that they will look at and think about.  This is a bingo hall. Nobody here says, "oh, interesting, I haven't thought of that, I will think about it now, thanks for the insight".
