Is there a botanical garden near you? Ag Dept office?

I could probably find out what sort of tree it is online. I thought someone might have a quick answer.

Just an update on my tree. I have moved my compost bin out to the unused old garden area (where I have been dumping my grass clippings). Having dumped my first lot of vegetable scraps in the bin last night, I bought a worms booster pack and placed the contents into the compost bin today. I am hoping that the worms that I have sheltering underneath the concrete of the house (and around near where the compost bin was located) will notice that the compost bin has been moved. I want them to make their way out to the garden for the winter. Hopefully, they will leave their casts to fertilise the tree right near the compost bin.

I have also bought 130 litres of potting mix to put around the yard. With the weather expected to be dry after this weekend, I could put some potting mix over the yard to retain the moisture. And then I might add the lawn seeds a week after that, when the mix is all settled.

I have a few bags of gypsum that I bought over a fortnight ago. Just now, I have read online that it takes about 3 months before you see the results of improved soil quality. I guess I can wait until August before I apply the gypsum, and let the potting mix and lawn seeds do its thing. But, I might be having this backwards. Should I apply the gypsum this week and let it do its thing, and then put the potting mix and lawn seeds down in August?

No, apply the gypsum now, let it work over winter.

Yeah, I had the same thoughts this morning. Probably better to apply the gypsum and let it do its work during the dry months. Then I can apply the potting mix and put some lawn seeds over that later in the year when it will likely rain more.

Best ask LTYC if Africans still fertilise the lawn by digging little holes to lay upon and hump away?

Yes! If you could dig the area over and pour the gypsum on the clods then in the spring your soil should be improved, less claylike, better drainage and moisture retention.

Realistically, all I need is for a day where 200mm of rainfall just falls and washes away whatever salinity problems I have. But, I won't see that happen for a good number of months. On Sunday, I am going to mow the yard. Then I will search for spots that are bare and dig that up and dump it in the unused garden. Dad has an aerator that he is going to let me borrow. I plan to have my yard looking as good as the neighbour's yard.

I might start just watering the yard every week and making sure the grass is gree over winter.

Best get a potato peeler and steal your neighbour's buffalo grass at night - bit by bit. Wink

I doubt my neighbour wants me to have anything to do with his place. Especially his daughters.

Just plant some Tulips in your front yard Subby and those Daughters will love to strike up a conversation with you about them. Ask Bobby about Tulip advice.
Sadly for Bobby, he lives in a Unit that has no Tulip-friendly space and that's why he's been feeling neglected too.
Oh well, at least Marla wants to rape him at point blank.

I think my neighbours might be querying why I have so many solar lights in my front yard lighting up the front of my house.

I wanted to get some halophyte plants to grow in my backyard garden. But, there does not seem to be much range available at Bunnings.

Back and side yards got mowed today. I quickly mowed the lawn outside my front fence, too.

I took a 10 minute rest break. Then I got to sprinkle some gypsum over the back yard -- mainly. The western side of the yard got a good sprinkling of gypsum, too, seeing that the side there gets a fair amount of rainwater on that side.

I was considering seeing to that the northern roof drainage point gets blocked from draining and all the water goes to the southern and western water drainage points, just in case the northern drainage point is softening up the soil nearby and causing the house to lean that way.

The forum is called "Cats and Critters". Not "Critters and Gardens".

"The Tool Shed" seems like a proper place to host this topic.

Putting the last bag's worth of gypsum over the lawn, it occurred to me that I had not done a level test of the house. So, I got my level out and took it upstairs to see which way the house is leaning. It is now evident that the house is leaning south. The ground slopes slightly from north to south (front to back). Chances are, the compost bin that I had at the back of my house might well have helped with worms softening the soil out the back of my residence. Come September, I will have to move that compost bin to under the front tree in the shade.
