It was only the latest bombardment of the beleaguered Kurds by Turkey, NATO member and Western ally. It did not trend online. There were no noisy protests in London or New York. The Turks weren’t talked about in woke circles as crazed, bloodthirsty killers. Tweeters didn’t dream out loud about Turks burning in hell. The Onion didn’t do any close-to-the-bone satire about how Turkish soldiers just love killing children. No, the Duhok attack passed pretty much without comment.

Jewish Google employees call for company to support Palestinians amid Israel’s bombing of Gaza

A group of Jewish Google employees has written to the company asking it to do more to support Palestinians amid the dramatic escalation of airstrikes in Gaza, which have killed over 200 and injured more than 1,400 people.

The group, known as Jewish Diaspora in Tech, called for Google to support and fund Palestinian-led relief efforts for those affected by military violence as much as it supports Israeli humanitarian efforts.

“We ask Google leadership to make a company-wide statement recognising the violence in Palestine and Israel, which must include direct recognition of the harm done to Palestinians by Israeli military and gang violence,” the employees wrote in a version of the letter that has been made public.

The letter, addressed to Google chief executive Sundar Pichai and the company’s Executive Team, called for the tech giant not to conflate Israel with the Jewish people, adding that “anti-Zionism is not antisemitism”.

“Anti-Zionism is not antisemitism and this conflation harms the pursuit of justice for Palestinians and Jews alike by limiting freedom of expression and distracting from real acts of antisemitism,” they wrote in the letter, reportedly signed by 250 employees.

In the letter, the signees also called for Google’s leadership to review the business contracts and corporate donations of its parent company Alphabet with institutions that support Israel’s violations of Palestinian rights.

Members of the group say they were inspired to write the letter after the Executive Team failed to put out a statement condemning the violence against Palestinians and some of them were promoting pro-Israel funding opportunities.

According to the group, individuals within Google had sought the company’s leadership to unequivocally “support the sovereign state of Israel” and that it respond to the escalating violence “from a one-sided pro-Israel perspective.”

The group consists of Jewish anti-nationalists within Google, and was formed in response to what they called the pro-Zionist sentiment within “Jewglers” – the official Jewish employee resource group (ERG) within Google.

The Knesset is a catholic group - though not a Catholic one though it may include some Catholics - and all are allowed their point of view.  Many Jews do not agree with government policy on the Palies.

Jeez - we could do with some of that here instead of the shoe throwing that we get in place of discussion..

In 4th phone call between the leaders, American president sharpens tone, calls for ceasefire; PM says he’s ‘determined to continue this operation until its goal is achieved’

US President Joe Biden told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a Wednesday phone call that he expects “a significant de-escalation today on the path to a ceasefire,” as Washington stepped up pressure on Jerusalem to end the fighting in the Gaza Strip after 10 days. Soon after, however, Netanyahu said he was “determined to continue this operation” against Hamas until “peace and security” were restored for Israel’s rocket-battered citizens.

During their fourth call since the start of the Gaza conflict, “the two leaders had a detailed discussion on the state of events in Gaza, Israel’s progress in degrading the capabilities of Hamas and other terrorist elements, and ongoing diplomatic efforts by regional governments and the United States,” according to a White House readout. “The President conveyed to the Prime Minister that he expected a significant de-escalation today on the path to a ceasefire.”

Unlike the previous three calls, the readout made no mention of Biden backing Israel’s right to defend itself, which critics said was a nod to Israel to continue striking in Gaza.

Retired British Army colonel Richard Kemp says in his entire military career he’s never known of such an “extraordinary” surprise attack triggered by “deception” like the Israelis conducted in Gaza by duping the world.

On Friday the Israel Defence Forces sent out a tweet which said air and ground troops were “currently attacking in the Gaza Strip”.

Shortly after the Israel Defence Forces sent a clarifying statement which said “there are currently no IDF ground troops inside the Gaza Strip”.

“What the Israelis did is that they massed tanks, artillery and infantry on the border with Gaza and gave every indication they were going in,” Mr Kemp told Sky News.

“The tank engines were noisy with dust being kicked up, the world media picked that up and Hamas, of course, picked it up as well.

“It was then thought there was going to be an immediate invasion of Gaza, and, of course, hundreds of Hamas terrorists then went into this, what’s called a metro tunnel network, an underground tunnel network they’ve dug since 2014 which contains weapons, contains command and control facilities, and shelter for the terrorists.

“The IDF then attacked those tunnels with 160 aircraft which dropped … bunker-buster bombs and destroyed large parts of the tunnels.

“When some of the terrorists came out, they then got hit as well from their air.

Mr Kemp said the “absolute body blow” to Hamas would probably be a turning point in the conflict.

“The reality right now, there’s some consideration being given to peace negotiations mediated by the Egyptians which could, I think, possibly produce some kind of result in the next day or so,” he said.
