Two men have been charged over the alleged online racial abuse of NRL player Latrell Mitchell.

Mitchell is a First Nations fullback for the South Sydney Rabbitohs and has played for Australia.

Police started investigating reports from the NRL integrity unit earlier this week about the alleged social media messages.

Detectives from the Fixated Persons Investigation Unit charged the two men following inquiries into the alleged offensive messages sent to Mitchell last weekend.

A 22-year-old man in Taree on the NSW Mid-North Coast, and a 25-year-old man at Lake Munmorah on the NSW Central Coast were arrested earlier today.

Police then seized electronic devices, which will undergo forensic examination.

The pair have been charged with using a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence.

The 22-year-old man will appear before Taree Local Court on May 18, while the 25-year-old man will appear before Wyong Local Court on May 12.

NRL CEO Andrew Abdo said that there was "no place for fans like this in our game".

"Any fan who racially abuses or threatens our players will be referred to police.

"I want to commend Latrell for the leadership role he is taking."

"We wholeheartedly support Latrell in reporting this matter. He is a leader in the fight against racism in our community."

Mitchell received a four-match suspension on Tuesday night, leaving his hopes of winning a maiden Dally M Medal in tatters.

The 23-year-old was charged after hitting Tigers winger David Nofoaluma with a late arm to the face during Souths' 18-14 victory at Stadium Australia on Saturday.
