I had been basing my opinion of fasting for Ramadan on the lack of overweight Muslim people that I know in my town. And we have about 1000 people who are Muslim in Rockhampton. A large Bangladeshi community.

I have worked with Muslims, male and female, and they have told me that, during Ramadan, they only fast during "daylight hours", once the sun goes down they stuff themselves with food and booze!

One guy I worked with thought a Hamburger contained pork, once he was informed that it did not, he was into that regularly, plus beer. Grin

He was from Bangladesh, a really nice bloke.

I once shared a house with a girl when I first lived in Canberra. She had just returned from travelling overseas. She had visited Turkey and fallen in love with a young Turkish man. She saved up and paid for his airfare out to Australia. Unfortunately, in the year since she had left him she had fallen out of love with him, which she discovered upon his arrival at Sydney. Anyway, we gave him a welcome to Australia and it included "nibbles" which included Kabanosi. He loved it. It was, unfortunately until the next morning that I realised it contained Pork. Anyway, I never told him. Didn't seem to affect him in anyway...

I had the impression that Ramadan was about not eating or drinking during the daylight hours and then eating and drinking at night. Only the young, the security forces/emergency services, people with medical conditions and politicians are exempt from taking part.

That said, I also had the impression that going daily hours where you don't eat or drink, you would be losing more weight than the average 0.5kg over a period of 28 days.

Having going a couple days feeling hungry just recently, it feels like I have lost 1kg over the last week. Surely, Muslims that go hungry for a month would lose a lot more. Then they would carry that weight loss onto the next year. I just have not seen many fat Muslims. But, websites claim that Muslim majority countries have an obesity problem worse than the United States. That surprised me.
