You will find that Australia had more to do with it for 'our' existence proved the better 'alternative' to that which the USSR was following and existing for. The USSR basically 'collapsed', run out of fuel you could say. It had a nuclear 'meltdown'. Reagan's dementia had nothing to do with it. The Americans just followed the new process of the USSR going. Its actually the Vietnam war and the events that followed that made the West realized two things:
- They cannnot win a war with Russia and China on the same side.
- Russian and China are not entirely best buddies.
- And there are more better diplomatic ways to dividing the East bloc without direct Military intervention.
Starting with Kissenger, and followed by Nixon's visit, it started the catalyst which then ultimately lead to the demise of iron curtain in Reagan administration.

Well, the US landed a C-17 Globemaster III in Taiwan, directly challenging the Chinese regime's self-declared 'red line' which was 'when the US flys a military aircraft into Taiwan would be the trigger for the regime to take Taiwan by force'.

That was a week ago.

The outcome? Almost no response from the regime.

Firstly, the regime tried to stop it from being reported. When that failed, the regime's foreign secretary made a lame statement that vaguely referenced the incident.

'We urge the US to adhere to the One-China principle and to the provisions of the China-US joint communiques . We urge them to immediately stop any form of official exchanges with Taiwan. Handle the Taiwan issue with caution and with sending the wrong signals to separatist forces so as not to cause damage to further bi-lateral relations and appease instability to the Taiwan strait'.

The incident has turned into an embarrassment for the regime as, since Xi came to power and the rise (and failure) of the pathetically hilarious 'wolf-warrior-ism' that has indoctrinated so many Chinese citizens, who have now been angered by the regime's perceived weakness.

After years of threatening, when the US called their bluff... The regime backed down.
