National Arboretum 'future-proofed' against drought after months of rain, managers say

The National Arboretum, which has been slowly taking root in Canberra for almost a decade, has seen its forests explode in growth after a deluge of rain this summer.
After spending the past eight years focused on just keeping its 100 forests alive through drought, heat and bushfire smoke, the arboretum's managers say the site has received a year's worth of rain in just six months.

The rain brought on the greatest growth in the arboretum's history — more than 30 per cent growth in many of its forests, according to manager Scott Saddler.

"[Compared to] the last seven years or eight years the trees have been in, this year has been extraordinary," Mr Saddler said.
But Mr Saddler said it was underground where the rain was making itself felt most.

"What [the rainfall] means for the trees is that the root systems are able to get down deeper, and it makes the trees more resilient," he said.

"So this particular rain has been just a godsend."

He said it had even been enough to "future-proof" the trees against future droughts and other hardships.

Its a great view, and you're a lot happier on the Five Peaks bike ride having done Mt Stromlo, then Red HIll then Mt Pleasant, then Mt AInslie, then Black Mtn and then Dairy Farmers

Canberra needs to plant more Trees and not just dry eucalypts that offer little except sedation to the populous with their blue haze.
Trees help create rain and being in a valley (the crater) they would condense the moisture to a higher possibility of rain.
Go further south to the Nimmitibal region and 79% of the rain falls around the often martian dry rural properties that have dug the earth clean of trees - to rain upon the surrounded Forests and National Parks. In the Riverina - the rain always follows the rivers and this is where the majority of trees are to be found.

Canberra could plant great species of trees that would not only enhance the area but improve the quality of living as Trees also cool the surface temperature upon hot days to knock a degree or two off people's discomfort. You do stand in the shade on a hot day don't you? Just 'caging' the concept of their value in Arboretums and Parks is very minimalistic in approach - almost 10% in effort there. But it doesn't help when people decimate Trees unrestrained.

Oh, I heard a mining company wants to mine under a wetland again. Having drained others previously to permanently dry. Stange world we live in. Roll Eyes
