(The regulator also approved the global AstraZeneca Oxford jab, which is also being produced in India.)

This, despite the fact that the key third phase of Covaxin's clinical trials - the vaccine is given to thousands of people and tested for efficacy and safety - was underway.

This one has been tested. Its in the third phase, its already gone through phase one and two, so its been tested.

Lots of potential treatments for all sorts of things have been abandoned during and after 3 phase trials. .

And the first 2 phases are testing. You used the phrase "A number of vaccines are being distributed which havent been tested at all". Now you can make the argument that this vaccine has not fulfilled all testing requirements. But it has had some testing on it.

You've given me one example of India rushing through the process without completion of Phase 3. In terms of say Australia our approved vaccines have they finished Phase 3?

The one s approved in Australia are in the last steps of the Phase 3 which essentially means they are monitoring recipients for long term adverse effects.

This is from the Lancet on an article about the AstraZeneca one

haemolytic anaemia in a control recipient, and fever
higher than 40°C in a participant still masked to group
allocation. Two additional transverse myelitis cases
considered unlikely to be related to the intervention
occurred: one 10 days after the first dose of ChAdOx1
nCoV-19 was attributed to pre-existing multiple
sclerosis and one in a control group that occurred
68 days after vaccination. The transverse myelitis
cases resulted in temporarily pausing the trial and all
participants have recovered or are recovering.

In the Pfizer vaccine, 8.8% of recipients (out of 40000) reported Grade 3 (likely to interfere with daily activity) adverse effects.

Serious Adverse Events
Serious adverse events were defined as any untoward medical occurrence that resulted in death, was life-threatening, required inpatient hospitalization or prolongation of existing hospitalization, or resulted in persistent disability/incapacity. The proportions of participants who reported at least 1 serious adverse event were 0.6% in the vaccine group and 0.5% in the placebo group. The most common serious adverse events in the vaccine group which were numerically higher than in the placebo group were appendicitis (7 in vaccine vs 2 in placebo), acute myocardial infarction (3 vs 0), and cerebrovascular accident (3 vs 1). Cardiovascular serious adverse events were balanced between vaccine and placebo groups. Two serious adverse events were considered by U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as possibly related to vaccine: shoulder injury possibly related to vaccine administration or to the vaccine itself, and lymphadenopathy involving the axilla contralateral to the vaccine injection site. Otherwise, occurrence of severe adverse events involving system organ classes and specific preferred terms were balanced between vaccine and placebo groups.
