A letter writer in the paper the other day had an interesting idea since a lot of people are also complaining that they can't travel overseas at the moment.

He said that people should be allowed to leave Australia right now for any reason at all (since they don't pose a Covid threat by leaving) BUT on the understanding that they will go to the 'back of the queue' if they wish to return with no guarantee they will even get a flight back at all for the foreseeable future.

I agree. Mind you, I don't believe there is actually a 'queue' but, if there was one, it is definitely a good idea. It will at least make people think twice before leaving, especially for frivolous reasons, then hoping to get back again almost straight away.

I disagree   we are a country of whingers   they would demand and demand and write letters and do interviews making us look like the enemy....look whats happened in India  no one made them go  it was their choice their own risk....if you go o/seas EXPECT to get stuck there  do not expect to come home when it suits you   because this could very well be the future for a long time...

Hi, cods.

Nope... operation is now scheduled for May 26th, 3 weeks from Wednesday. Attempt #5 from memory. Unless it gets cancelled again which is a definite possiblity with all this Covid business here in Perth at the moment.

Yep, the situation in India is a tricky one but apparently about half of the 9,000 "stranded Aussies" wanting to come back went there since the start of this year and about 1,000 went in the past month. "Very stupid people" is probably the politest way to describe it.

There's really no other way to describe it. It also makes a mockery of these alleged "closed borders" and "hard borders" we've been hearing about over the past year with all these people flying in and out almost nonstop.

Right now, I'm listening to plane after plane coming in to land at Perth Airport since they've been using the shorter cross runway this morning (presumably due to the strong easterly winds) and I'm wondering how many more Covid cases are arriving and if we're going to have another quarantine outbreak and lockdown.

A lot of these planes could be the early morning FIFO flights returning but I'm pretty sure FIFO doesn't use the larger aircraft I've been seeing and hearing.

What a fiasco.

Coronavirus WA: COVID-positive food delivery drivers visited 76 food businesses over weekend

https://www.perthnow.com.au/news/coronavirus/coronavirus-wa-covid-positive-food-...

Quote:
More than 70 food businesses across Perth were visited by COVID-positive food delivery drivers during the course of two days, a new exposure list reveals.

McDonald’s, Hungry Jack’s, Nando’s, Subway and KFC were among the potential hotspot sites listed by the Health Department.

However, despite the delivery drivers picking up food from numerous outlets and travelling all over Perth, Premier Mark McGowan deemed the venues “very low risk”.

The delivery drivers were housemates of a hotel security guard who contracted the virus from returned travellers.

If we're not in lockdown again by the end of this week I'll be very surprised.

I'm safe then.

But seriously, yes: lock-down is coming, plus an indefinite period of mask wearing.

Neither of the two bother me personally, but it's gonna be horrible for business owners and their employees.

well I will keep the old fingers crossed there is no more delays   I often ask myself  if this was one of the Premiers waiting for an operation   would they also go through this many delays???????....I cant see it happening to be honest....

yes to all those Australians who took themselves off to India  in the midst of something that has shown it is not going away.... I say tough you are stranded...the threats this govt has made has nothing to do with racism..fancy dragging that tired old excuse into this   I understand some people have travelled to other countries and tried to return from there as if they have never been to India and    thats shameful..

Coronavirus WA: UWA academic warns mask fatigue setting in as Perth rides out COVID storm

https://thewest.com.au/news/coronavirus/coronavirus-wa-uwa-academic-warns-mask-f...

(Subscriber only article but the 'headline' tells the story anyway).

Mask wearing still doesn't bother me or my elderly aunt but I was reading the other day where a lot of small businesses in Perth are still experiencing up to a 50% downturn in business which some of them attribute to the ongoing mandatory wearing of masks.

Perhaps a lot of people (especially the elderly) are preferring to stay home instead of having to wear a mask outside?

Hi, cods.

You can take the masks off (or, just pull it under your chin like I do) for the entire duration of your meal and/or drink. At least I believe you can. That's what I see everyone else doing.

That's the problem with having crowds at the footy and other sporting events, most of the spectators would probably keep a drink (alcoholic, of course) in their hand for the entire game (as Greg said last week about the footy here in Perth) so they wouldn't need to wear a mask at all until they left to go home.

Oh, great.

Perth's hotel quarantine system could see fewer security guards due to shortage of vaccinated workers

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-05-06/concerns-hotel-quarantine-security-shorta...

Quote:
Western Australia's hotel quarantine system could see a significant reduction in security guards from Monday, due to a shortage of vaccinated workers.

At least 30 per cent of the security guards staffing WA's quarantine hotels have not been vaccinated against COVID-19, just four days out from a government-imposed deadline.

But the government has indicated a reduction in guards could be managed due to the reduced number of returning Australians quarantining in WA.

So, what happens when our "returned traveller" numbers go back up from 500 to 1000+ a week?

Mind you, it isn't like these "security guards" are much use anyway (except for sitting around playing with their phones and occasionally catching the virus and potentially spreading it across half of Perth and the metropolitan area giving us all the 'joy' of more lockdowns and mask wearing, etc.).

Calm down

Astrazeneca and now making over a million vaccines a week here in Australia
This vaccine reduces the risk of hospitalization by 95%
Meaning that once we have vaccinated the population
It will actually be impossible for the hospital system to be overrun

Any coward that does not wish to get the vaccine
Can then be ignored as a fool

With that rate of vaccine production and assuming the population are not reprehensible idiots who refused to be vaccinated
We will have the whole problem solved by the end of the year

Airports back at maximum capacity
People coming in going at will

It just relies on everyone getting the vaccine

If people don't want to get the vaccine they are obviously just lazy no hopers who never want lockdown to end
There is one word for such people
Disgusting chodes
