environmental catastrophe

According to estimates by Greenpeace Taiwan, during the apex of the pandemic, from early February to mid May, Taiwan produced and used roughly 1.3 billion surgical masks. Assuming each face mask weighs 4 grams, that’s 5,500 metric tonnes of general waste generated within a span of three months. To put that figure into perspective, each garbage truck is capable of transporting 5 tonnes of trash at a time, so Taiwan produced enough face masks over a three-month period to fill 1,100 garbage trucks. Furthermore, according to existing rules and regulations regarding the disposal of surgical face masks, used face masks are “unrecyclable” due to the fact that they may be contaminated and could potentially lead to indirect infection and viral transmission if they enter the recycle system.

Cool story.

Instead of 'one use and throw away' surgical masks maybe people should be using high quality and much safer K/KN95 or P2 masks like my aunt and I do.

We can get about 8 hours use from a single KN95 mask which lasts about 2 weeks seeing as we don't go out very much these days. I keep the masks in brown paper bags between uses and the bags get replaced every few days (I use them for putting small amounts of rubbish into before throwing them out).

Saw some people I know at The Coffee Club in Belmont Forum this morning, they had a copy of The West Australian so I borrowed it and took pictures of the story in my previous post.

So, it's still only "pleas" and "highly encouraged" which I'm sure won't make much difference but I did notice that even though it wasn't very busy at Belmont Forum it looked like more people than usual were wearing masks today which is a good sign.

Some of us were wondering where Mark McGowan had disappeared to until we've seen him in the paper today - maybe he caught Covid again on his overseas trip which wouldn't have  been surprising.

Sorry about the slight 'crop' on the left side of the bottom part of the newspaper article - it was taken with my mobile phone and I was in a bit of a hurry. There was also a full page ad in the paper as per the article but I didn't get a picture of it.

I’m stunned that they plea or try to encourage mask wearing…. Why is it… they were able to mandate it earlier but not now?
After all I had read and heard how stern and strict McGowan was with WA…this is a complete about face turn! Weird.

Mark's dilemma is.... will he restrict or stop travel to and from Bali (hint from the article - he won't at this stage because of the tourism $$$) or will he risk devastating Australia's agricultural industry when FMD arrives and spreads?

He won't upset the Bali brigade.

(I'm the only person in Perth who has never been to Bali)

FMD is coming (with the next wave of COVID), and this won't end well.

I’m dreading this… I reckon it’s a warning of what’s to come… they are preparing us.
How did FMD start in Bali? Was it coinciding with Aussies starting to go back to Bali again?
Back in 2001 ….I was flying back from Europe and I can’t recall if it was somewhere along the line or when I got to Sydney where we were all being questioned about whether we had been in farms or had used shoes in suitcase to walk on farmland etc. as there was an outbreak of FMD back then that grabbed headlines around the world.

Yes, a lot of us here in WA are very disappointed with Mark McGowan for finally caving in to big business like the rest of the State Premiers.

Perhaps a bit of a clue as to why Mark did a "complete about face" was when he was on the inaugural Qantas Perth to Rome flight a few weeks ago with his new "best friend", Alan Joyce?

Was only about 6 months ago when McGowan and Joyce were at each others' throats after Joyce compared WA to North Korea over McGowan's refusal to open WA's border at that time.

And then we have Perth Lord Mayor, Basil Zempilas and his chorus of coffee shop owners who were constantly whining to have the border opened followed by the dropping of mask mandates because they "thought" mandatory masks stopped people going into the Perth CBD.

But, like everywhere else in Australia they soon found out that dropping mask mandates resulted in lots of sick staff and customers which really isn't too good for any business, not just CBD coffee shops.

Talk about a bunch of slow learners.

Oh, I just read where someone believes there could be some sort of 'pact' between Mark McGowan and Daniel Andrews to hold off on mask mandates and other Covid restrictions protections until after Andrews bags another term in government come November.

Would not surprise me one bit.

Of course, the other problem is that there was obviously a 'deal' made between former PM Scott Morrison and the State Premiers that once a certain percentage of the population was vaccinated (with just 2 doses initially) the plan was then to open up and 'let it rip' and hopefully not have cases and deaths that would be any worse than a bad flu season.

Then Delta and Omicron (especially Omicron with it's numerous sub variants) came along and shot that plan to h3ll as we now can see but the Premiers were already committed to opening up and big business was determined that they were not going to tolerate any delay in opening Australia up regardless of the resulting Covid cases and deaths which we are now seeing.

Which leaves us where we are today - up sh!t (Covid) creek without a paddle.

And, this is worrying to say the least:

Someone in my family who is returning to live in Australia from the northern hemisphere was able to get their winter dose early based on the fact that Australia was on the list where covid is out of control.

Can't see too many tourists coming here at the moment once the word gets around.

Hey, Marky Mark...

https://ww2.health.wa.gov.au/Media-releases/2022/July/COVID-19-update-20-July-20...

Quote:
WA Health is reporting a total of 7,901 new cases to 6pm last night. There are currently 37,244 active cases in Western Australia.

To 6pm last night, there were 457 people with COVID-19 in hospital, 22 in ICU. Up again from yesterday.

Sadly, today’s report includes two deaths, which were reported to WA Health yesterday – a man in his 80s and a man in his 70s.

Cases, hospitalisations and deaths still rising... are you still afraid to mandate masks in case we lose our "social licence?"

"457 people with COVID-19 in hospital, 22 in ICU."

Wasn't it the WA branch of the Australian Medical Association who said last week that 350 hospitalisations would be the "tipping point" where our hospitals would be overwhelmed and mask mandates would need to return?

What are you waiting for?

For the life of me, I can't understand why people are so anti-mask.

Reistroduce the mask mandate NOW, Mark!

I may have mentioned this previously but it's amazing how if you go to places like Japan or Asia and you don't wear a mask in public you'll get dirty looks from everyone.

Here, it's the other way around and that needs to change.

Wish I could get a shirt made up with this picture on it, I'd be wearing it every day.

Oh, dear...

WA Health Department stuck with 2.25 million ineffective rapid antigen tests

Quote:
The WA Health Department is stuck with more than two million COVID rapid antigen tests that have been withdrawn from sale in Australia.

It comes after the Therapeutic Goods Administration launched a review into the effectiveness of RATs in detecting the newer variants of COVID-19.

Perhaps it might have been better if the WA government gave us all free K/KN95/P2 masks instead of dodgy RAT's because I've heard that even the ones that are still approved are only about 60% effective in detecting the newer Covid variants - especially Omicron and it's multitude of sub variants.

I still have 25 RAT's here that came free from the WA government a few months back - 15 nasal swab type and 10 saliva type and I haven't used any of them so far.

Maybe I should sell them for $10 each and make myself a nice $250?  Cool
