you wont be hit hard, so much as have to adapt to the new norm.

community transmission

some deaths

some need for the vulnerable to isolate

lots of vaccinations [/quote[

fortress WA cant keep out a toad.

you will never ever ever keep this out.

why not face it now instead of making it the boogie man.

hospitalisations and deaths in texas and florida have plummeted.

back to business as usual.

they are over the pandemic in 15 months.

WA has not even begun to take their medicine.

they are going to be so far left behind , they will rue the day they foolishly thought they could hide under the bed and the tsunami would magicly spare them
so all this has occurred with a vaccination program starting. Whats your point? The fact that WA due its geographical isolation has been more successful in being able to isolate, so what? No other place in Australia is attempting herd immunity by way of allowing community transmission and overseas experience has already shown that to be a dismal failure, the virus is now mutating in Brazil and India due to this tactic and becoming more deadly.

Looks like quarantine in city hotels is still as dangerous as ever.

Two people catch UK coronavirus strain while in Perth hotel quarantine, sparking India ban call

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-04-21/two-people-contract-covid-19-while-in-per...

Quote:
Two people staying at a Perth quarantine hotel have contracted the UK strain of COVID-19 from returned overseas travellers from India who were in another room.

The WA Health Department said the infections were previously reported as being acquired overseas, but genome sequencing data had since revealed the two people caught the virus at the hotel.

The guests caught the virus from an infected couple who were staying in a room opposite them at the Mercure Hotel in Perth.

Ban arrivals from India: McGowan

Quote:
WA Premier Mark McGowan's office said the returned overseas travellers who passed on the virus had arrived from India.

In a statement, Mr McGowan called for Australia to consider temporarily banning all travellers from India from entering the country.

Good idea, Mark. An even better one would be to spend some of the billions of dollars in mining royalties you're getting at the moment and (re)open and expand quarantine facilities on Rottnest Island for ALL "returned travellers", not just the ones from India.

On the right track here. I would prefer indefinite to temporary though.

Coronavirus crisis: WA Health knew Mercure hotel was 'high-risk'

https://www.perthnow.com.au/news/coronavirus/two-contract-covid-in-wa-hotel-quar...

Quote:
There are fresh concerns over Western Australia’s hotel quarantine system after a pregnant mother and her four-year-old daughter contracted COVID-19 while in hotel quarantine.

Genomic testing has confirmed the virus spread to the pair at Perth’s Mercure Hotel from a couple who had returned from India and were staying across the corridor.

It also emerged that the government had known for weeks that the Mercure was the highest-risk of WA’s quarantine hotels due to ventilation issues.

Premier Mark McGowan on Thursday announced the Mercure would no longer accommodate returned overseas travellers.

Oh, and...

West Australian Premier concedes quarantine hotel at centre of COVID-19 transmission is ‘not one of the best’

https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/health/health-problems/west-australian-premier...

Quote:
Authorities have begun an investigation into how the transmission occurred.

“Somehow, between two rooms that had closed doors, there has been transmission,” Mr McGowan said.

“We’re doing everything we can to make sure we test anyone who was on the floor during the relevant period to make sure there was no further transmission into the broader community.

“At this point in time, we have no indication there was further transmission. The relevant people on the floor were required to wear PPE.

“We put in place measures to keep them away from the room in question. We put in place HEPA filters which filter the air.

Obviously, the HEPA filters are not sufficient to prevent airborne transmission of the virus in hotels.

And, weren't the airlines telling us just recently that the HEPA filters on their planes prevent the spread of Covid between passengers during the flights? Judging by the number of "returned travellers" arriving with Covid it doesn't look like the filters work too well on planes either. Especially when everyone is supposed to test negative before they board the flights to Australia.

"Fortress Western Australia" has been doing just fine for the past 12 months even with the occasional stuff up with hotel quarantine, etc.

The only threat to our "fortress" (and the rest of Australia) is this never ending stream of "returned travellers" bringing Covid back with them - especially the new strains - and the continuing dangerous use of inner city hotels for quarantine.

Apart from that, Perth (and the whole of WA) is back to our pre Covid way of life. For now, at least. Mind you, apart from the one 5 day lockdown a couple of months ago we've pretty much had a 'normal' existence here since the start of the pandemic.

But, this 'normal' way of life does cause a high level of complacency amongst the population (no social distancing or using contact tracing apps or pen and paper when entering shops, etc.) which will make any Covid outbreak more difficult to control.

I walked past the Mecure Hotel (a quarantine hotel) in the CBD this morning at 7am, and there were police in masks everywhere.

There was a 000 bus parked outside, with police cars (flashing lights on) at front and back.

Not sure what's going on there    Undecided

New arrivals from the airport I guess (?)

Hi, Greg.

They might be moving "high risk" quarantined people to another hotel?

Perth coronavirus quarantine hotel stops taking travellers after guests infected in their room

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-04-22/no-more-travellers-at-wa-quarantine-hotel...

Quote:
The West Australian Premier says Perth's Mercure Hotel will not take any new returned overseas travellers after the virus was transmitted between people in quarantine who were staying in separate rooms.

Quote:
Health Minister Roger Cook said the Chief Health Officer had found all 10 hotels were suitable for quarantine, but some represented a lower risk than others.

He therefore recommended the Mercure should be used for very low-risk guests.

Mr Cook said the government was in the process of transitioning the hotel to a dedicated low-risk facility when the transmission event was detected.

Rottnest Island still seems like a good choice to me.

2 Indian families next door to each other in  adjacent rooms and Indian security guards. Maybe that was the issue.
