Scrap state governments!
Sep 3rd, 2020 at 10:45am

"Australian States and Territories comprise 610 politicians, duplicating the activities of 227 federal politicians. Australians support a further 537 local governments. We have approximately 7,700 elected politicians in Federal, State, and Local government, and we have 2,046,000 public servants nationally...Modern Australia is over-governed and in need of a overhaul. We need to scrap state governments.", Change.org petition.

Are we over-governed in Australia?

Probably.

I also think we're seeing another issue of the federal/state divide over the last year in that its too easy for state or feds to pass the buck by saying its the others responsibility

A lot of those public servants are not pollies. They are postal workers and transport workers etc etc. . . .

If there were no local or state govts who would oversea all the state things like hospitals and roads etc? The main govt in canberra handles NONE of those things.

I did a thread on this just a few weeks ago

In the 21st century we have no need for 3 tiers of government.

many people are actually governed by 5 levels of government when the upper houses are considered

Sure we are overgoverned. One leader could achieve the same thing. But then he'd start shooting anyone who tried to overthrow him.

Good, good. Everything is going according to plan.
The States have become divisive and more independent of each other and together, more so from the Federal. Maybe in 50 years those States will fracture into small Independent 'Nations' of their own. It 'might' turn out like Yugoslavia in some cases as they fight over their territories. These things happen.
I told yas.  Wink

The recent Covid-19 crisis has actually shown the effectiveness of federalism.

If Australia were a unitary state then the entire country would be shutting down, rather than each individual state. This means that Western Australia doesn't have to pay for the stupidity of Victoria.

And secondly, would you be willing to give Peter Dutton police powers?

Why would the entire country need to shut down? Chairman Dan started with postcode shut-downs, but went statewide after bungling hotel quarantine.

Do you feel comfortable giving the Chief Medical Officer police powers?
