August "Optional" Windows 10 update

It's a miracle! Shocked

Installed the "optional" Windows updates today:

August 20, 2020—KB4566116 (OS Builds 18362.1049 and 18363.1049) Preview

August 20, 2020-KB4570723 Cumulative Update Preview for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 for Windows 10 Version 1903,
Windows Server 1903 RTM, Windows 10, version 1909 and Windows Server, version 1909

AND ...

Things are running way more efficiently on my Laptop after installing them. Cool

Usually, updates do nothing to help or seem to slow things down.

What's going on at Microsoft?

Have they got someone there who knows what they are doing now?

Yadda Yadda is quoting the Koran again.

But Capt N, have you downloaded Windows 10 Version 2004 yet ?

It is on your Windows 10 Update Screen beneath those other 2 minor updates.

It is pretty big and takes a while to download and then install. You will be glad you have your 100Mb/s fiber optic NBN cable.

It is quite an update and the PC has to restart multiple times.

After all that it still looks the same.

I've turned off updates for the next month ... I might keep delaying if things stay this good.

Did a clean install of Windows 10 2004 at the end of May and I've had absolutely no trouble with it whatsoever.

I've removed all of the stuff I don't use like OneDrive, XBox, etc., etc. with the Tools option of CCleaner so I ended up with Windows 10 being as 'clean' as I can possibly make it before I installed all of my programs, etc.

Here's a screenshot of mine with part of the Start Menu displayed - I've also run a registry file I found on another site that gives me the 'new look' Start Menu that's coming out in the next version in a month or two (the change just removes the colored squares from around the Start Menu icons which makes it look better, in my opinion).

To get Windows 10 to run properly you need at least 16Gb memory and a fast CPU and a modern motherboard. It won't work on old gear.

Easy to change these things on a PC but near impossible on a LapTop.

A registry checker like Registry Wizard is handy as the registry can get a bit scrambled after a while which slows things down.

CPUID CPU-Z is handy to see all your details like CPU type, memory, etc.

I get all updates as they come on line. Keeps it all running smooth. Windows 10 sure is a nifty operating system.

Ubuntu LINUX is not all that far behind now. It is virtually immune to virus and spyware. Updates nearly every day. Software is free.

Where Windows 10 is a cut down file server system which allows only limited number of connections Ubuntu LINUX is the full blown file server system with connection access limited only by memory.

Most web sites use Apache web server running on LINUX.

Mirco$oft build updates are usually based on security risk for such enterprises like banks and businesses where daily, large transactions are taking place. They are rarely beneficial to personal computing needs. As far as home computing goes, Windows 10 foundation is based on data mining and Micro$oft keeps on reverse engineering and revising its subtle ways to spy on your browsing habits and even personal documents. So when they say it's just another "Patch Tuesday" they are constantly refining their ways to collect whatever they can on you either to sell or utilize to take advantage of the consumer.

So no question they have people there who know what they are doing.

I have had no trouble with regular Windows 10 updates.

Trouble will occur if you are trying to run Windows 10 on old machines say 10 years old as Windows 10 is setup for new machines with the new style technology.

There is a wealth of danger floating around in the internet with hacker types continually trying to get into your machine.

Windows 10 is a big improvement on the earlier versions and it is much more secure. So it is very wise to keep Windows 10 right up to date.

If you want to be adventuresome then try Ubuntu LINUX which is nearly as good as Windows 10 now and even more secure and virtually immune from virus and spyware. And the software is all free.

We have a couple of older Dell Venue Pros (256 m.2 drives/8Gb of RAM) and they run Win10 perfectly fine. We also have an even older Dell laptop (~2011 vintage, 2nd gen i7, although it does have 16Gb of RAM in it) which also runs Win10 perfectly fine.

I also run a Win10 virtual (on Hyper V) which is limited to 4Gb of RAM, and that also runs perfectly well.

As for "security", yes it will likely have a smaller attack surface than earlier versions of Windows, but at what cost (to privacy, particularly)?

Someone should link one of the articles floating around which detail the settings which are "on by default" in the various Win10 builds, and how to disable them.
