Wow that’s interesting history there!
BTW Greggery, my son convinced his dad to get a man bag, so in our very last holiday/cruise (none since and then covid happened)
son bought his dad a man bag and instead of in pockets, a cross bag is quite good, with bulky car keys, wallet, some medicines one may need, hanky, mobile phone.... I mean there’s only so much men’s jeans pockets can take!

I use a money belt/bum-bag and have it under my shirt, on my incredibly impressive six-pack.

I only keep a few dollars in loose cash in my front pockets.

Oh yes, those bum bags are awesome, I love them. Especially keeping passports etc handy whilst checking in for plane travel etc.
The money belt is good too, but if ease of access is needed, then bumbags are good.
Trouble is with hubby, he is so skinny that the bum bag keeps riding down so he hates them, hence the man bag.

I usually have a sturdy camera bag with millions of hidden zippered compartments and use that when going out sightseeing so it doubles up as a handbag and camera bag.
Coz you know, I have to take a gazillion photos with extra SDcards and spare batteries, then take photos with mobile phone to send onto messenger to my kids.
Best thing doing that, taking mobile phone photos to instantly share with family or friends, they love it and I like it too when my kids share theirs with me via messenger.

I was almost pick pocketed in Rome.
I hate Rome by the way....can't stand the place.
Only thing good was the Colosseum.

I loved Rome. Even with the pickpockets. Now for my pickpocket story ..

The last time I was in Rome was with my now wife and my mum. Mum had to settle property matters after her mum died so i took her for a tour of Rome for a few days. Outside of Romes central station mum decides to lecture us on the dangers of pickpockets in Rome, and to always be aware ... she's thinking because she was born there they were less likely to get her and more likely to get me. Whilst she's telling me this, I spot a young gypsy kid with his hand in mums handbag ... so I say to mum 'do you mean like that kid with his hand in your bag, mum?' ... she turns around and to her shock and horror, she's busted him red handed .... the poor kid copped an earful.

But the gypsies in Rome pale in comparison to those in Bucharest .... that place is full of them ... no matter how jamb packed the buses are, the seats around the gypsies are always available ... but no one will sit near a gypsy ... from what I've seen and smelt, they don't believe in washing. You'll find around Bucharest lots of houses with gold plated roofs ... those all belong to gypsies ... there must be good money in pick pocketing.

I never understood why Gypsies (as a 'Mob') cop/ped a bad rap.  Maybe I am ignorant on that issue.

Maybe they saved heaps from less water usage!

Everyone I have spoken to love Rome, even my son and his wife.

I must be the only one that hated it.
Maybe because I had a 17 yr old daughter with me that these young blokes all kept asking her to a “party” (like f.  K !)
I told the elderly male receptionist about it and he shook his head no with a grim look.
And there were a group of 3-4 of these young guys following us, while we were walking with our cousins and aunt, now.... everyone I pointed the vhs video camera to would say “ciao” smile and wave, when I turned the camera to these guys following us, they quickly averted hid their faces. I have that on VHS!

Well.... I didn’t know this then but that movie with Liam Neeson “Taken” explained it all.
They use the word “party” because they say the western girls love that.

Then, we did a day bus tour around Rome...to see the Colloseum, the Trevi Fountain, and The Vatican City.

It rained like hell as soon as we boarded the bus, and all these Indian guys came out of nowhere to sell umbrellas! 😂
I bought 2 of course for 10 lire each.

Then as we walked to the Trevi fountain while raining they were there selling umbrellas to other tourists.
And as sudden as it rained, it was sunny... all them Indian fellas disappeared! I couldn’t believe how fast they vanished,
Anyway, the Trevi Fountain was in the pokiest place .... didn’t expect that.

Vatican City I saw not much of as there was some service by the pope and 140,000 people were there!
All us being scanned and bags checked before going in (remember it was just after 9/11)
Saw crowds, shops, a McDonalds and that’s all I saw!
Would have loved to go into that building.

Well thank goodness the Colosseum was fascinating to explore.

the armed customs officers at Fiumicino airport (armed with machine guns) tried to give my 16 yr old sister a strip search ... until my dad got involved. Once he called for their supervisor they let her walk straight through. Dirty bastards.

Keep your crap out of my Posts, AiA.

I am asking a serious question, sir. Did this experience with the Indian cabbie inspire you to become one?

Good morning AiA. Welcome to the Travel forum which I am proud to be moderator of.
As this is your very first trip in here, I ask if you can contribute and share your travel story as others have.
I would like this to be a safe travel forum where everyone can come in and not feel hassled....after all, isn’t that what going on travels or holidays are about  Wink since Covid 19 had severely restricted our travel options, this is one place we can reminisce of times when most did travel abroad with stories to re-tell.

I believe you are in the USA? Have you travelled much AiA either abroad to other countries or within the USA?
Looking forward to your own experiences 👍

I have surely posted here before. What are you blathering about? I lived in Japan for 16 years. How is that for a travel story?

The Colosseum was my favorite, but I loved the pantheon, Trevi fountain, the roman forum, (shut up goober),  Spanish steps and the restaurants ... the food was to die for. I loved Rome. The idea that I was walking on the same streets ancient romans once walked on  Wink

You just had to avoid the restaurants that service the tourists, and look for the ones in the back alleys that the locals go to. Wink

Only worrisome moments were when gypsy pickpockets were near. They got a small notebook but not my camera or money thankfully. This was in Rome near the Forum (which is not a bathhouse, LOL!)

Bet you've been to a bathhouse or two...YUCK.
