Most harrowing: really just gypsy women trying to pick my pocket on the outskirts of the Roman Forum—went to see Hadrian’s Arch.

I was almost pick pocketed in Rome.
I hate Rome by the way....can't stand the place.
Only thing good was the Colosseum.
And then, those pesky gypsy men dressed up as gladiators, to have photos taken with your camera, they hold the camera, and then, ask for money while they hold your camera!!

But the pick pocket scenario...was waking back from a restaurant with my then 17 yr old daughter.....cross those big scary roads, and those old buildings have deep door archways, where homeless sleep, and you can't see anyone there....well, after crossing what looked like an empty street, I felt my camera bag feel heavy all of a sudden, and I quickly looked, and there was this man, about late 20's, darting off, telling me my bag was opened and not to have it open.

I swore at him in Italian, probably thought we were silly Anglos that didn't understand...haha...you should have seen him take off.

So I never had a handbag, I had a camera bag, with wide strap, and lots of different zippers everywhere, hard to find where money is etc.

Got to think of these things.

One thing though, I learnt how to 'cross a street in rome' with busy traffic....you know there is a trick to it...don't you?
Even if it is a pedestrian striped walk way.

I love Rome, but the scammers and pickpockets are a pain in the arse.

I had a run in with a flower seller on the Spanish Steps, as well as one of those Centurions on the road that leads up to the Colosseum.

They're a real pain in the arse those guys.

And the women who sell scarves - had one come up to me at an alfresco restaurant.

She laid the scarves over my friend's phone on the table while she was talking to us (the scam is, they pick up the phone/wallet/whatever with the scarves when they leave, without you seeing).

I slid my hand under the scarves and pulled the phone out without HER seeing   Grin

I've had my pockets picked twice.

Once in Sarajevo, by two kids no older than 5 or 6.

The other time was in Malaysia, at that amusement park in the Genting Highlands.

One of the worst spots in the world for pickpockets is in Prague, at the Astronomical Clock.

When it does its thing at 11am, everyone holds up their cams/phones and takes pictures while the pickpockets just walk through and empty everyone's pockets and bags.

Be careful if you ever go there.

If you're aware of it, there's nothing to worry about though.

I have learnt to travel as such....
*Pack a suitcase then take out almost half.
*Never bring valuables that can’t be replaced.
*photo copy all credit cards and passports with contact numbers in case it goes missing etc you have a handy reference. Keep one copy in the suitcase, another in your carry on bag.

It happened that....after flying interstate from Melbourne to Sydney, then losing one of my mobile phones in that plane, (lucky it was not all important like the one I didn’t lose!)
Then catching a international to (the shytest airport) LAX.
Then rushing our guts to get through security, pick up luggage, go through another area to check in to catch a flight to ummm ... Canada .... forgot where, but it was a lovely airport, and after 33 hours of no sleep and flights, having to fill declaration cards and I left my passport on that plane!
We nearly missed it because of LAX. Pure madness... should be Slax.

I’m feeling bloody hopeless at this point.

So I had a photo copy, went to service desk to ask someone to retrieve my passport, seat number given.
So an hour later I’m reunited with my passport, but, we have missed the bus to pick us up, with tour guide holding card up for it.
And because I got a dodgy mark on my form, I was dragged into this security area, with all these chinese people.

Then we were called up and asked if we had anything to declare like food etc while my suitcase was open.
I said I had half a choc fudge cake left over from the plane’s refreshments.
He just looked at me and winced a bit, more out of pity I think.

He didn’t bother to check much else and passed us through.
Well, I had to phone back to Australia web jet to ask them to tell the tour guide to come get us please!

Half hour later he came to us. We finally get to motel, but because we were so late there, had to wait in lounge about an hour for room to be made ready.
I thought .... I just wanna go home ! My eyeballs were hanging out my head from lack of sleep and jet lag.

If this was the beginning of all the bad luck crap happening... I was ready to come back home!!

Turns out was a fantastic bus tour in the Rocky Mountains and then a Cruise from Seattle along the inside passage of Alaska.
Made some nice friends too, we catch up sometimes for a pub meal get together up in the Gold Coast.

Also, others on the tour wanted to make a complaint to webjet for the rushed and almost missed planes etc because we only had 2.5 hours between flights to check out, then check in again.
I have heard stories since of others having 4 hours between flights, and they still missed the flight!
My daughter in law, being an international airline hostess, she looked at my itinerary before we left, she says, 2.5 hours each between flights isn’t much time.
Well now I know !

I changed flights going back, costing hundreds extra, but... to stay in the USA meet long lost rellies, go see Disneyland etc
The flights I did coming back to Oz were better, no rush.

I don't have to do that, as I hardly ever buy souvenirs.

I just leave the expander zip done up on my suitcase, just in case I buy a jacket or something.

Not a problem.  I don't have any.

I ALWAYS do that.

Re: my lost mobile phone, it ended up in lost property in Adelaide.
Cost me $85 returned via pack and send, I cringe, saying it’s only $14 with tracking from post office, get told they don’t do it like that, it’s pack n send only. Well that was the last of that crap happening!

I would have to say I hate LAX.
When we rushed like crazy, running with back packs, I saw a reflection.... I said to hubby, we look like ninja turtles! 😂😂🤨

With packing suitcase, I always packed too much! And half of it I never used or wore, so that much I learnt, to pack light, so it’s not heavy weight to drag around and lift.
But it’s nice to have room for stuff I like to buy overseas that’s different .... there’s always a cute little number on special  🤗

Back in the 1970's my brother and I went to NZ during Winter.

Tried to get up to Coronet peak in our hire-car (a mini minor) ... first ever encounter with black ice.  Shocked

About 3/4 of the way up, we hit it and wondered why the car was not proceeding forward, even though the engine seemed to be running still.  Grin

Realised we had driven onto black-ice. So we made a 20 point turn  Cheesy by inching forward and back turning a little bit by bit with the prospect of plummeting off the side down to our deaths.

Eventually made the turn and proceeded back down to Queenstown very, very carefully.  Undecided

Yes, I am worried about driving on black ice in the Tasmanian winter. April and September no black ice thank goodness. But when I am living there. . .

The first time I visited Hobart I hired a car and headed straight for Mt Wellington.

On my way, I encountered black ice.

Now, I'm a pretty experienced driver and have driven thousands and thousands of kilometres all over the world.

Black ice beat me though.

I just couldn't control the vehicle.

I kept driving until I came to a roundabout, and then turned around and went straight back to the car hire place and gave them the vehicle back   Grin

1. Getting to my B and B at Naples after a 35hr plane/train flight to find the doors locked and no one there.

2. Tomorrow, dragging a unfit newby through a canyon with 9 km of walking

I did that in Tassie, actually found it not as hard what everyone said./

This black ice, we have never encountered it thank goodness, but does it depend on type of vehicle and tyres to control situation better?
Also, is it more a problem to occur in winter during early morning after a cold night???

That is reassuring!

In Vic, around Ballarat IIRC, there are signs to drive at 40kph if warning lights flashing? Guess that is for black ice.

Yes.

From memory, I picked up my car at about 6.30am and it was a very cold winter's night.

In Singapore last year it happened to us, arrived only to find it’s a high rise apartment with no receptionist or front desk etc.

The phone number I had via email was not answering. Seemed invalid.
How I managed to finally find a different number hidden in an earlier email when checking my iPhone.
Finally got through and they came to open up
Building for us to get to our apartment.
It was okay but.... the advertising was deceitful, it showed it to be a big spacious apartment, and ours was tiny!
When my son and his wife arrived next day, they were horrified how tiny the place was, and booked elsewhere and wanted us to go too but I said we can’t get a refund, and 4 nights was $1,400
We were right in the heart of Singapore and accommodation is expensive.

All that ketfuffle aside, loved the sights and city of Singapore.

But, when we got back to Melbourne, middle of winters night and freezing, can’t recall how we got to where our car was parked, shuttle bus ? I think they were not answering, maybe taxi there?
We get there and the whole place in darkness, closed.
Here we were in mid winter, late at night, can’t get to our car as it’s locked up.
I had one number not answering. Left message.
Then another mobile number, left message.
Finally a security guy came to open side door to let us in!
Pays to leave a message in detail as I like to do!
Just bits of panic mode moments that can happen!

It does, but also technique is important I found. You need to be smooth with your inputs.
