Three Million Living In Poverty In Australia
Feb 21st, 2020 at 5:46am

One in eight Australian adults living in poverty, study shows   Sad

New figures out today about the wealth of Australians paints a bad picture, with housing prices and a lack of jobs hurting millions.

news.com.au February 21, 2020

One in six children in Australia and one in eight adults are living in poverty, according to a new report released by the Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS) and the University of NSW, Sydney.

“It’s not right that in Australia, one of the wealthiest countries in the world, more than three million people, including three quarters of a million children, are living in poverty,” ACOSS chief executive officer Dr Cassandra Goldie said.   Sad

Lead researcher UNSW Sydney Associate Professor Bruce Bradbury said the poverty rate in Australia is worse than in most other wealthy countries, including New Zealand, Germany and Ireland.

“Our report finds that 13.6 per cent of people in Australia are living in poverty and that poverty rates have remained at about this level for the past decade, despite economic growth,” Prof Bradbury said.

“Child poverty has consistently been higher than overall poverty, ranging from 18 per cent to 16 per cent over the past decade and now sits at 17.7 per cent – more than one in six children.”

The Organisation for Economic and Social Development (OECD) estimated the overall poverty rate in Australia at 12.1 per cent in 2016, but the ACOSS report has a slightly higher figure of 13.6 per cent because it took housing costs into account and used some slightly different measures.

However, both figures are still above the OECD average of 11.8 per cent.

The report calculates the poverty line in 2017/18 as $457 per week after tax for a single adult; and $960 per week for a couple with two children.

For those who own their own home, or don’t have to pay rent, the poverty line is lower, at $370 per week for a lone person, or $776 per week for a couple with two children. This is an estimate of how much is needed to buy all other essentials after housing is paid for.

In calculating the poverty line, the report does not estimate how much people need for necessities, but instead sets the amount as being equivalent to 50 per cent of Australia’s median income.

This is acceptable, the report states, because the cost of achieving an acceptable standard of living varies over time and between countries, as technology such as mobile phones or indoor toilets become more common.

However, this does not mean income inequality can’t be eliminated, the report states, and this can be done by lifting the lowest incomes (including minimum wages and unemployment benefits) to at least half the median level.

Dr Goldie said the Federal Government could reduce poverty by boosting growth in jobs, increasing Newstart and Rent Assistance, and investing in social housing.

The ACOSS report found the single rate of Youth Allowance (plus Rent Assistance and Energy Supplement) was $168 per week below the poverty line.

Those on the Age Pension (plus Pension and Energy Supplements) fared a bit better, but their income was still $10 per week below the poverty line.

An ACOSS survey released last year found nine out of 10 young people on Youth Allowance had skipped meals, and one in three had withdrawn from their studies because of a lack of funds.

“It’s clear we must act to lift people out of poverty,” Dr Goldie said.

She said households with the lowest incomes saw their average housing costs rise by 42 per cent between 2005 and 2017.

This was much higher than the middle 20 per cent, which saw their housing costs rise by 15 per cent.

ACOSS is calling for a $95 per week increase to Newstart and Youth Allowance; a $20 per week increase to Rent Assistance (as a first step) and for these payments to be regularly indexed to wages, as is the case for the Age Pension.

The low rate of Newstart, a lack of jobs and unaffordable housing are locking people in poverty, ACOSS says.   Sad

Newstart, Youth Allowance and Rent Assistance have not increased in real terms in 25 years.

“We want to support each other. It’s who we are as a nation. But our economy is leaving people behind, with persistently high poverty rates despite decades of uninterrupted economic growth,” she said.

“The job market is changing, with jobs less secure, and fewer entry level jobs than there used to be.

Dr Goldie said that those living in poverty included young people working to get their foot in the door of the competitive job market, single parents juggling caring responsibilities, and older people confronting age discrimination.

“Not only has poverty remained consistently high in our wealthy country, the depth of poverty is getting worse, with households in poverty on average living 42 per cent below the poverty line, up from 35 per cent in 2007,” Dr Goldie said.   Sad

UNSW Social Policy Research Centre Professor Carla Treloar said it was clear action needed to be taken on income support, housing and employment.

One of the problems lies in the fact Australia is touted as 'one of the wealthiest countries in the world'

it's a problem affecting Aussies and it's what keeps attracting those overseas who're looking for a better deal in their lives

It's been obvious for decades that in reality, Australia is not 'wealthy' at all from the perspective of those in the streets

sure, Aussies have Medicare and access to education, water, power and the fundamentals of life which do put us in the 'top 8%' reportedly

but at the same time, major Aussie media reveals that a staggering percentage of Australians have less than a thousand dollars to their name. So if they lose their job, they lose their home be it rented or mortgaged … and along with that comes loss of their access to shelter, power, food and everything else.  And it's happening with alarming, devastating frequency

So what does 'our' fake government do and what has it been doing for all those decades since it began shipping manufacturing and jobs overseas?  Right.  The geniuses continue importing low or no skilled migrants to be housed, provided money, transport, free medical and education

Yet that very same lunacy is what's crippled Sweden, for example, where it has very recently been revealed that over 90% migrants do not work.  But, but, Swedes were told it needed those migrants to help pay for 'crippling aged pensions'

didn't work, did it?  Of course not.  And now Swedes, who are less than 50% of their own population, are working flat out to house, feed, educate, medicate etc. ALL those migrants as well as those bad bastards who worked all their lives until they got old and have the hide to expect an aged pension

no different in Australia and ALL the other Western nations who were crippled by the genius plots of those who aren't even members of their own political scum

Of course Australians, millions of them, are living in poverty.  That's what happens when populations are swamped by millions of non Australians who for some reason MUST be catered for using Aussie taxpayers as a bottomless pit of money by scoundrel traitor politicians who will never be impoverished courtesy of the deals they've wrought for themselves while they were stabbing Aussies in the back and then blaming those Aussies for their predicament

there's only one way out of this and that's to invite China with all its shortcomings to properly take over this place, although it's to be doubted they will because they're doing fine buying this country … the best of this country's land and water .. all with the blessing of those same treacherous politicians who're bemoaning the sorry state of this country which they've destroyed whilst simultaneously blaming the poverty stricken for not being employed in all those non existent jobs

The punishment for political treachery used to be the noose.  No surprise, when the plots were being implemented, that they did away with capital punishment using Jack Ryan, thereby ensuring that regardless of the crimes they committed against Australia, they'd float like butterflies with their pensions and perks intact

The temporary jerks known as Australian politicians have NO plan to alleviate poverty in this country, unlike their plans to outsource more of what's left, simultaneous with bringing in even greater numbers of rods for Aussies' backs

next year there will be even more impoverished Australians thus blighting not only current lives but the lives of those of the future

I'll contact government and let them know they're paying you too much from our taxes

if they're paying you more than a cent a post, you're being overpaid

Everybody could be a millionaire and still half would be below the median. Poverty my arse. I don't need a government handout to post the obvious. It's just that you're too thick to see how laughable the benchmark is.

poor Smith

chip on shoulder combined with low intelligence will give you away all your life and nothing you can do to save yourself because you're too limited to self-improve and no amount of tutoring by others can penetrate your thick skin

too bad for you

Now, to save this worthwhile thread from any more of your garbage, a few facts:

until succumbing to overseas powers and the Lima Declaration

this country was prosperous

and very few … astonishingly few … were unemployed

less than 1.5 % unemployed

A one worker family member was able to afford to pay the mortgage, back when rates were sky high

was able to feed, house, clothe, educate the family

AND have healthy, regular savings

Was able to afford a family holiday at least once a year

was able to furnish a home and to afford whatever was needed in that home

Was able to afford a vehicle and to maintain and run that vehicle

AND was able to drink, smoke and have a flutter on the pokies

That all changed when the Lima Declaration sent an initial 30% of manufacturing and jobs to asia

followed by increasingly large percentage

until today …. almost NOTHING is produced in this country

Simultaneously, pathetic and successive treacherous politicians agreed with their overseas owners to pull into this country ridiculous numbers of low and no skilled migrants ….. and forced struggling Australians to pay for them

in addition, Aussies were thrown out of work in order migrants … many of them unequipped and many who were/are dishonest … could be provided jobs which were originally held by Australians

no work means no pay

no pay means poverty

this government has NO plans or ability to create jobs

Australians' standard of living has fallen drastically

and those who still have a job live on tenterhooks for fear that job won't be theirs tomorrow

morale is low

distrust and hatred for politicians and what they've done to this country is HIGH

and STILL politicians have NO clue how to rectify the results of their treachery

but they CONTINUE to pull in migrants to exacerbate the problem

So they play Pass the Parcel when the heat gets too much

and one treacherous party takes over from the other

But STILL no plan or hope of fixing the problem

and STILL more migrants, most of them useless, are flown into Australia

to work as 'security' and in care homes which have sunk in quality like rocks and where entering a 'care' home should come with a warning label same as the cigarette packets

Meanwhile, the genteel poor hide behind front doors which could be repossessed tomorrow

and live on cheap food and skimp on dentistry and buy clothes from op shops and give up the second car and forgo holidays and live on threadbare carpets and scan supermarket specials, etc

and government bloody knows it

but CONTINUES to fly migrants in, 99% of which will live on welfare generationally

because why else would they come here if not to live on the back of supposedly 'wealthy Australia'

and it was migrants of previous nationalities who destroyed what was Workers' Comp. with their 'amputated finger' and 'bad back' scams

To fix poverty, address the causes - the main cause being about 2 million full time jobs fewer than needed to ensure everyone has work.

Secure part-time work is also important. Conflating part time work with casual work has done a lot of harm to the employment market.

We need to get unemployment down to below 2% and KEEP it there. 1.5% unemployment is achievable. Anyone who says that 5% unemployment is "desirable" or a "natural level" should be taken out the back and shot.
