Greens back action to stop oil drilling in Bight
Mirage News

The Greens have backed the community groups taking legal action to challenge the government regulator’s (NOPSEMA) initial approval of Norwegian oil giant Equinor’s plans to drill for oil in the Great Australian Bight.

Senator for South Australia and Greens Environment Spokesperson Sarah Hanson-Young said the environmental approval announcement last month was a devastating outcome for the tens of thousands of Australians deeply opposed to the project.

“The Christmas eve approval for drilling in the Great Australian Bight has not gone unnoticed. The Greens, together with the community, will take all steps necessary to stop this environmental destruction from going ahead,” Senator Hanson-Young said.

“Australians rightly feel as though their pleas for the Great Australian Bight to be protected from oil and gas drilling have fallen on deaf ears. It’s therefore no wonder The Wilderness Society SA and the Great Australian Bight Alliance have decided to challenge the decision.

“South Australians, and indeed the majority of Australians, don’t want our Great Australian Bight turned into an oil field. They don’t want a foreign oil giant destroying our coastline and one of our most precious and treasured assets.

“Just today an Ipsos Australia poll shows the environment is the biggest worry for Australians, above cost of living, healthcare and the economy. This comes after catastrophic fires across the country fuelled by the climate emergency. Australia should be cutting fossil fuel pollution not opening up new oil fields in our oceans. It seems everyone gets that except for the Morrison Government.

“The Federal Government could put a stop to this pain by agreeing to world heritage protection and backing Greens’ legislation currently before the Senate to give the Bight the protection it deserves.”

I remember we discussed this pre Christmas

So in teh final analysis, what did the average Aussie have to gain from the drills?

Anything?

except for pollies no doubt.  Nice little kick back for the investment portfolio

I support the Greens and anyone else who opposes it, on principle

It is more like what will the average Aussie get from this?

It depends what they turn up.

Oil? It will relieve our reliance on imports.

Gas? It will relieve the eastern states of their gas drought.

The Federal Government? Royalties.

The states? it will depend on how and where they bring the product to shore.

And it will provide jobs.

Well WhiteKnight - you're just going to have to get yourself some guns and nukes and make it happen yourselves. The ALP & LNP are like the Gov-Gen and PM - they both serve the UK & USA interests here.

So what say you?
Ya gonna make it happen? Huh

I am sure that all things being equal they will occur. Absolutely certain? No.

So where do you see the product going? And how?

The jobs? Well they will have to be qualified, but there are plenty who fly in and out of Australia for those very same jobs overseas.

Even in the drilling stage there will have to be stores in Australia. They can't keep them further away due to time constraints.

Its a whale sanctuary and all the oil will go overseas, they can get their greedy mitts off, a 30ft storm swell out there will smash the rigs to pieces destroying a pristine coastline and turning it into a brown black sludge.

There is plenty of oil around. Go elsewhere.

“The Great Australian Bight has some of the most extreme weather conditions on the planet. Extreme deepwater drilling under such conditions is too risky. Any spill would be catastrophic, as stochastic modelling done previously by BP has shown: the devastating impacts could reach from Perth in WA to Eden on the NSW south coast to as far away as Tasmania.”

Furthermore:

"Home to one of the most stunning marine environments in the world, the Bight lays claim to the largest population of southern right whales on the globe – but they’re not alone. Sea lions perch on rocks, dolphins bob in and out of the waters and the fish population creates a spectrum of colours you’ve never even dreamt of. Outside of the water, albatrosses soar, ospreys dip and dive for food, while penguins gather at the base of the Nullarbor Cliffs as the ocean laps against the base of the Bight.:
