You do realise that Australia's population in 1919 was just 5 million. The fires weren't as dangerous because there were fewer people. There weren't 5,000 people holidaying at Malacoota for a start.

The topic is about native animals

The size of the human population has little consequence as to the number and size of bushfires starting naturally

But as Frank's post said: "Finlay’s thesis examined problem bushfires between 1881 and 1981. What she found after plotting the historical data on a graph was that there was a marked increase in the size and frequency of fires after 1919.This was when bushfire-reduction operations increasingly moved away from traditional indigenous practices such as low-intensity cool burning."

Even 5 million people in 1919 were enough for danger to increase. Aboriginal burn-off methods were ignored apparently

a disaster on Kangaroo Island.... where can they run???...

animals have better instincts than we humans and many of them would have headed away from the fires long before now...fingers crossed they made it...

a lot of our small towns on the coast were full of holiday makers.... no matter whats ahead they still go on holiday... Roll Eyes

makes sense to some.

Well it's his opinion and it was an opinion he had 5 years ago.

Perhaps he would like to explain how fuel reduction burns can be safely carried out after 3 years of drought.
The armchair experts on this forum haven't explained.

Many fuel reduction burns escape and become dangerous bushfires
The window when they can be safely done is just a few weeks in Autumn

Fuel reduction burns arn't the silver bullet that conservative commentators like to think Wink
