I was watching news footage of southern areas in NSW & VIC yesterday ......

where there was major loss of homes/property

and by majority all were built in amongst trees...

I understand peoples desires for the "tree change" but the reality is if you're going to live among the gum trees .... without any plum trees(TY  John Williamson Grin) .... I should say without substantial buffer zones .....

when you get conditions like we have currently & because of the lack of forest management ......

houses are going to burn down.

You can't live in among the bush/trees without substantially higher risk.

I can't understand how people haven't figured that out yet ..... year after year from one decade to the next.  Roll Eyes

Well i have to agree there however these fires are unprecedented. Ppl may have to rethink how they live now but in the past the risk wasnt as great.

The risk has always been there ...that's why you find most farm houses in the clear in the middle of the property.... and if they have trees around the house ...they aren't natives they're usually imported evergreens  .....

these aren't Sarah Hanson Young "Climate Fires"  Roll Eyes....

they're just fires that have a much larger fuel load to burn with more intensity .... which has been caused by Govt policy & mismanagement.

And with an increasing population we have more people living in rural bush settings.

Oh yeah & it seems that also brings an increase in the number of firebug arseholes that deliberately light these fires.

I don't see what that has to do with my post, cods.

well you seem to think the weather[reporting] would have made some difference to this outcome....

we have been told for a long time about drought but they have concentrated on the farming areas   forgetting it affects everywhere....our bush is meant to BURN   its what keeps it going....

I wasnt in particular picking on your post unsub....just giving another explanation......to me so much is commonsense  yet somehow that never seems to be taken into consideration...

You don't know what I think, cods. Because I have not said that weather reporting would make a difference to people learning to deal with weather change. I have not been given any idea that Australians are concerned about the drought other than to symbolically raise money in "parma for farmer" fundraisers, or add an extra 10c/L to milk prices.

The bureau made a claim that the Indian Ocean Dipole has ended the positive index. Therefore, we Australians should see an increase in shower and storm activity in the northwest of the Australian continent.

Rainfall charts have shown that only northwestern Qld has escaped drought conditions. Some places have even shown well above average rainfall for the year. I won't be happy unless we see 1200mm of rainfall for my town for the year 2020. Forecasts have indicated a likely La Nina conditions by winter and springtime above average rainfall.

There seems to be a bit of a shift in weather in the last few months. We went through a fairly cold and average winter period. Into a hot and dry spring. Summer has been very lousy with no considerable rainfall. If the bureau is claiming an end to the positive Indian Ocean Dipole, then this should be the start of the normalisation of weather patterns.

The bureau of meteorology is a good guide to figuring out weather patterns 2 weeks in advance.

I check the radar loops and work it out for myself - been doing that for years.

You are looking at the next 12 hours of possible shower activity in your area. I look at weather charts and figure out the likelihood of rainfall up to 3 days away. Some websites use forecast models to show an accurate likelihood of cyclones developing when and where. They are very interesting.
