Should the volunteer Firies be paid after ?
Dec 27th, 2019 at 12:59pm

Should all the private sector volunteer Firies be paid after working on fires for lets say a months fighting to qualify.

This allows it to remain voluntary but have a protection for these peoples financial situation.

Even if this is roughly equivalent to the one months payed leave as per the Public Service

Some state governments may already do this but lets make it mandatory

I say yes Scomo get off your knees and do the right thing!

Hallelujah  !!

Reddy probably does't know but

"Prime Minister Scott Morrison, however, said federal public servants who volunteer with state rural fire services to battle the blazes would get 20 days of paid leave on top of their regular annual and sick leave."

But as fire is a STATE responsibility ScoMo can only suggest what they do

"Morrison, who has been under pressure since taking a much-criticized family vacation to Hawaii during the wildfire crisis, urged the private sector to implement similar measures."

“We know this does not address the situation for self-employed and small businesses directly, but it does mean those working for larger organizations can step in and take some of the load from those volunteers who work for themselves or small businesses,” he said.

I reckon either two weeks straight, or 4 weeks across a 12 month period.

it is tough   VOLUNTEER  its means doing something for others fo no reward....it is a tough one....firies are not the only ones who volunteer....will it take the shine off what they do and why they do it????????.....

personally I think each and everyone of them should be rewarded  not sure a slap on the back or a medal is enough......this year is extraordinary   I think it is the exception  to the rule......lets pay them what they are worth..

Another issue with this is the volunteers average age is getting older, in other words there are less younger people volunteering!

one can only deduce the younger firies are more likely to have mortgages, young families etc and probably cant afford time off work with no pay where as a lot of the older ones may be better off or retired.

So pay them Jesus freak!

i suspect it's just another typical liberal party's 'do as little as humanely  possible whilst pretending to solve everything' tactic

just how many volunteer firefighters are federal employees? i'd guess that it's a very small percentage.

That sounds fair,

also any that claimed they didnt want it as they preferred to be a volunteer only, could donate it to a charity  helping the victims!

The Courageous and Technologically Superior a Race of Australian Military swooped in to help the poor and exhausted Fire Fighters of basic technological capability and who has to sponge help from other nations and their Fire-Fighters.

Even now, the Fire Fighters are now burning their own fires to combat the Wild Fires, as if they had to borrow some 'sacred knowledge' from the jilted Aboriginals to make themselves look good.
Now if only they could do it year round - we might not have these bloody Wild Fires of Mass Destruction!  Angry

Apparently the Soldiers are earning 'Tax Free' wages saving the Fire Fighter's arses!  Tongue

Quote:
Volunteer firefighters approaching 100 days away from jobs ask for more financial help

Volunteer firefighters in New South Wales are calling for greater financial support from government as many firies clock up 100 days.

Fires have devastated much of the state's east coast for weeks, with the northern tablelands ablaze since September.

Earlier this week, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced Federal public service employees would be eligible for four weeks' paid leave.

However, he has so far ruled out expanding such support to non-government workers or those who are self-employed.

Leighton Drury, NSW state secretary of the Fire Brigade Employees Union, has called the current system "unsustainable" and said it was getting to the stage where volunteers were being treated like "slave labour".
What do volunteers say?

Harden farmer Peter Holding has been a Rural Fire Service volunteer with his local brigade for 40 years.

In that time, he has watched as conditions have worsened with a changing climate, but said he had still not seen things "as bad as this".

"A big issue with the volunteer service is how long they can continue to do this as the season stretches into weeks and months," Mr Holding said.

"We need to have a big rethink about paying people and maybe employers as well."

A declining rural population is also adding pressure — every family leaving town means fewer volunteers.

Some volunteers, however, are resistant to the idea of a remunerated service.

Emma Ellis is a fourth-generation farmer in the New England region and has been a volunteer with the RFS for almost 15 years.

"I'm not sure you'd be encouraging the right sort of person if you started paying," she said.

"At the same time, if there's some way for active members to get some sort of compensation, it would help, especially as these fires have dragged on so long."
Cash or credit?

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian maintains the RFS is well-resourced and "will get what they need".

But Mr Drury refutes this claim, citing pleas for more equipment made on Facebook and in GoFundMe pages set up by fire service volunteers.

Copacabana on the state's Central Coast, and Ingleside in Sydney's north, are among several brigades that have started grassroots campaigns appealing for funds to buy more face masks.

"[There should be] a funding overhaul, including payments, [and] offsets or tax breaks to employers when their workers are away for extended periods," Mr Drury said.

Some volunteers have raised the idea of a reduction in their council rates to compensate for weeks without income.

Bilpin RFS volunteer and fruit grower Margaret Taddrosse said even the $15,000 emergency payment was "nowhere near enough".

"A lot of volunteers around here are tradies or self-employed and they've been without income for at least 10 days," she said.

"It's not enough to recover what many have lost."
