Climate Change: Why Australia needs to do NOTHING!
Dec 24th, 2019 at 8:49am

Australia's eco system sequesters more CO2 every year than Australia emits, therefore we are a carbon neutral country, what we emit is taken up by our land and its eco system.

Here are some crude results from what information is available.

Depending on their state like, tree spacing, humidity, dryness etc etc
Australian grasslands and forests sequester approximately between
0.5 to 2 tonnes of carbon per hectare annually

To convert to CO2 we need to multiply by 3.67, therefore re-writing

Australian grasslands and forests sequester approximately between
1.835 to 7.34 tonnes of carbon dioxide per hectare annually

There are approximately 149 million hectares of Australian forests
There are approximately 440 million hectares of Australia grass lands

Forrest uptake of atmospheric CO2 every year
Lowest: 149 x 1.835 = 273.4 million tonnes of CO2 per annum
Highest: 149 x 7.34 = 1093.66 million tonnes of CO2 per annum

Grasslands uptake of atmospheric CO2 every year
Lowest: 440 x 1.835 = 807.4 million tonnes of CO2 per annum
Highest: 440 x 7.34 = 3229.6 million tonnes of CO2 per annum

Let’s combine grasslands and forest uptake of atmospheric CO2 per annum
Lowest: 273.4 + 807.4 = 1080.8 million tonnes of CO2 per annum
Highest: 1093.66 + 3229.6 = 4323.26 million tonnes per annum

Australia emits 560 million tonnes of CO2 per annum

The bottom line is
Lowest: Our grasslands and forests sequester nearly double what we emit.
Highest: Our grass lands and forests sequester nearly eight times more than we emit.

Conclusion:

It would be a rare occasion for the lowest or the highest values to take place therefore more than likely we would hover somewhere in between lowest and highest depending on the sun and weather conditions.

The above doesn't take into account the uptake of the land (Australian soil) itself which would make those values even bigger.

Soil can sequester carbon at the following rates

Croplands…………………………………………………..0.25 to 1.0 tonnes of carbon per hectare annually
Pastures………………………………………………………0.1 to 0.175 tonnes of carbon per hectare annually
Permanent crops…………………………………………0.5 to 1.0 tonnes of carbon per hectare annually
Salt affected & chemically degrade soil………0.3 to 0.7 tonnes of carbon per hectare annually
Physically degraded & prone water erosion….0.2 to 0.5 tonnes of carbon per hectare annually
Susceptible to wind erosion………………………..0.05 to 0.2 tonnes of carbon per hectare annually

Multiply by 3.67 to convert to CO2

Croplands…………………………………………………..0.918 to 3.67 tonnes of CO2 per hectare annually
Pastures………………………………………………………0.367 to 0.6423 tonnes of CO2 per hectare annually
Permanent crops…………………………………………1.835 to 3.67 tonnes of tonnes of CO2 per hectare annually
Salt affected & chemically degrade soil………1.101 to 2.569 tonnes of tonnes of CO2 per hectare annually
Physically degraded & prone water erosion….0.734 to 01.835 tonnes of tonnes of CO2 per hectare annually
Susceptible to wind erosion………………………..0.1835 to 0.734 tonnes of tonnes of CO2 per hectare annually

Australian land area = 769.2 million hectares

Instead of trying to do the calcs and sorting out what percentage is crop land, pastures etc, I got lazy and refer you to this,

This paper by (Cf Barret 2002) estimated CO2 exchange between atmosphere and the Australian soil at 700 million tonnes every year.

Therefore it can be said that just the Australian land soil sequestration of CO2 from our atmosphere is greater than Australia’s CO2 emissions.

.........................560 < 700.

If we do go to market for an Emission Trading Scheme we shouldn't pay anything at all, after all we are carbon neutral.

In fact we can sell the extra (sink capacity) as carbon derivatives.

But hey I wouldn't really want to go there.

Death to the oligarchy controlled United Nations and all their schemes......... Cheesy

I disagree. We should have a massive shift to nuclear energy and hydrogen powered cars, more due to pollution that just CO2.

If nuclear energy wasn't as dangerous as it is I would agree with you, remember Chernobyl.

As for hydrogen cars you will be sitting on a bomb not unlike LPG cylinders, because they are pressurized.

I'll address Ajax and PZ here.

Modern Nukes are safe. Chernobyl was the result of inherent design flaws due to design cost cutting and the incompetence of Soviet regime safety regulations.

Hydrogen cars: both Kia and Toyota are gearing up for hydrogen cars. It's going to happen.

Hydrogen is no more or less dangerous than other flammable fuels, including gasoline and natural gas. In fact, some of hydrogen's differences actually provide safety benefits compared to gasoline or other fuels. However, all flammable fuels must be handled responsibly.

Another take:

Now that you know about the dangers of hydrogen as a fuel source, should you be terrified by the prospect of having a tank full of it in your car? Not necessarily. Because hydrogen gas is so light, it disperses rapidly, mixing with the surrounding air and rapidly rising through it. Although pure hydrogen ignites quite easily, in reality, this diluted hydrogen mixture is no more likely to catch fire than gasoline is. And because it rises it isn't likely to remain near the ground, where it's most likely to harm people.

Faulty logic Ajax

Why haven't you included natural CO2 emissions in your equation?
Natural emissions roughly equal natural absorption
Human emissions are ADDITIONAL emissions

All the data showed is that you were able to cherry pick a year after major bushfires 2010
That proves nothing

Hi Cods

I whole heartedly agree love, lets clean up

1. The plastic island in our ocean
2. Chemical pollution btw CO2 is not pollution
3. Recycling yes we can do it better maybe to the point of no wastage
4. And all other things man litters nature with

But I want you to stop and think for a minute.

Why don't the oligarchy controlled United Nations launch a campaign as big as CO2 for deforestation or plastic in our oceans.

Why are they fixated on creating a CO2 carbon derivatives market, to the point of brain washing children and getting them to strike for their cause.

If they really love the Earth there are worse things than man emitting some extra CO2 into the atmosphere.

Lets clean everything up I'm with you all the way.... Smiley

How dare you barny.....?

Don't you know that Cods has reviewed and endorsed my climate change qualifications (see below), say no more.....!

Now about your crazy statement above my goodness man how much do you want to move the goal posts.

Last I locked the natural flux of CO2 that goes up into the atmosphere is

750 Giga tonnes

Compared with mans emissions of

10 Giga tonnes

Not even the IPCC is that ambitious, to sequester the whole Natural flux of CO2 that goes up into the atmosphere every year.

You talk a lot of sh@t barny, we did have 7000ppm of CO2 in out atmosphere before and there wasn't a problem with absorbing it or with a runaway green house effect.

Merry Christmas..... Wink

Recycling stuff is fine but most of it goes to landfill anyway.

The World has changed, grocers no longer fill paper bags with whatever you want and you used those paper bags to start the fire in the combustion stove to keep the hot water working.

Do people really want to go back to the Old Days? I doubt it.

Hi ChrsP

Welcome aboard.

There are many ways to get rid of some of that waste apart from recycling we could use some of it to fire Co-generation plants, fluidized bed boilers that use green energy such as this waste.

Someone with money will invest in recycling and become our next billionaire.

Talking about bags I think we had the wool pulled over ours with these re-usable ones.

From another thread

Quote:
Banning biodegradable bags was good for the environment only to substitute them with reusable bags making the supermarkets that much richer at 15 cents a pop.

People still use reusable bags for rubbish bags.

So being that much thicker they would last how long in the Earth.....???

What a con job that was......!

No you didn't petal.

"Our results show a strong carbon uptake in Australia from the end of 2010 to mid‐2012. This uptake coincided with record‐breaking rainfall and consequent soil moisture increase that lead to increased growth of vegetation as shown by the increased SIF and the observed peak in biomass burning emissions, as well as the large increased flux uptake shown in the inversion results."

https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/2015GL065161

Coming into summer. That is later than Spring.

How could they get that so egregiously wrong  .. the satellite of course it couldn't be the garudian or from where they derived their data. Wink

"Almost 60% of the higher than normal carbon uptake that year, or 840 million tons, happened in Australia."

That year was 2011.

"From October 2010 to March 2011, an extraordinary rainfall event occurred over most of Australia, which resulted in three-quarters of Queensland being declared a flood disaster zone – an area as big as France, Germany and Italy combined."

https://blog.csiro.au/record-rains-made-australia-a-giant-green-global-carbon-si...

yep definitely after Spring. Unless you think sequestration was a 3 month event. Grin Grin Grin Grin

But even if we take 60% of CO2 out of the whole of 2010 (rather than 2011)  we would have - 40% of 220Mt or 88Mt sequestered.

Now refute that.

What's this thing called "sea bins"? Saw something on TV about them collecting rubbish from the sea but it didn't say how they were going to dispose of that rubbish. Most of it didn't look "recyclable" at all.  Huh

So why have you only used natural absorption of CO2in your OP and ignored natural emissions?

When you invest in a tree plantation for the purpose of sequestering CO2 out of the atmosphere for carbon credits are you sequestering manmade CO2 or natural CO2, or just CO2 from the atmosphere.

Which is it barny.......???

Australia's emissions or global emissions?

According to the Garudian March 2006 to December 2007 we emitted 614.9 Mt.

https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2018/dec/13/australias-carbon-emissio...

According to the Garudian says Australia emitted 561Mt to March 2019.

https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2019/jul/09/australias-emissions-reac...

Apparently the highest on record doesn't go back as far as 2007. Wink

Well lets put it this way, our land and vegetation absorbs way more CO2 than we emit.

Why should Australia pay if we are carbon neutral no lets make that carbon negative.

Instead of sending billions of tax payers dollars to the oligarchy on wall street and the United NAtions.

Lets keep this money and invest in cleaner technology or retrofitting existing plants and if there is some left over lets put it into schools roads etc etc.

Lets clean up manmade pollution in all its forms.

CO2 btw is not pollution............... Wink Smiley

I have to admit it was amusing watching you on Christmas Day. One by one responding to every single coal related post on the forum. Working on Christmas day? The IPA really don't pay you enough  Wink

back to your BS about Australia being a carbon sink.

2010.

Quote:
Australia's weather pattern transitioned rapidly to a wet La Niρa pattern during the autumn of 2010, resulting in record-breaking rains in the Murray-Darling basin and well above average rainfall across the south-east. For many locations this was the first year of above-average rainfall since 1996. The rainfall dramatically increased surface water storage and soil moisture, effectively ending the drought in the south-east.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000s_Australian_drought

So the 14 year drought broke in the first half of 2010 and lets not forget the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009. It would have made for quite exceptional plant growth in 2010.

So I have answered as you have demanded. So are you going to return the favour and provide some stats for any year other than 2010?

Or are you just a hypocrite who has one set of standards for yourself and another set of standards for others?  Wink

In your opening post why have you failed to include natural CO2 emissions in your calulations?

If you only include natural sequestering and human emissions then you are missing a very important part of the carbon cycle and your conclusion will be wrong

Human emissions is what its all about right barny....?

Can we agree on that point, because I haven't found a document that tackles natural CO2.

So why then are you using natural CO2 absorption in you OP?
You can't have it both ways.
You can't count natural absorption but then ignore natural emissions.

That's a completely different question. Your OP related to the CO2 absorption of natural forests and grasslands

All of which is currently releasing all of its CO2 in the bushfires through out the country (but of course you don't count this, you only count it when forests and grasslands absorb CO2)

Oh Dear barny why are you using strawman argument.

All natural sinks degas at one time or another.

Apart from bush fires usually the degassing is much lower than their long term storage or annual flux.

Degassing involves a few million tonnes of CO2.

The annual flux involves thousands of millions of tonnes of CO2.

And long term storage involve billions of tonnes of CO2

In fact I will go out on a limb and say business as usual degasing is negligible compared to uptake.

But remember I said not bush fires.

Geez barny even the oceans degas mate and when that happens there are just not enough sinks in this world.

Floods and regrowth, bush fires and re-emissions all part of the natural cycle barny.

Cant have it both ways pal.

oh noes. Quoting wiki? Grin Grin Grin Grin

So youbelieve wiki over peer-reviewed articles? Grin Grin Grin

From one of your previous posts -

The_Barnacle wrote on Oct 20th, 2019 at 9:41am:
Record-breaking rains triggered so much new growth across Australia that the continent turned into a giant green carbon sink to rival tropical rainforests including the Amazon, our new research shows.

And that had a global impact. While atmospheric carbon dioxide still rose in 2011, it grew at a much lower rate – nearly 20% lower – than the average growth over the previous decade.

Almost 60% of the higher than normal carbon uptake that year, or 840 million tons, happened in Australia. That was due to a combination of factors, including geography and a run of very dry years, followed by record-breaking rains in 2010 and 2011.
https://blog.csiro.au/record-rains-made-australia-a-giant-green-global-carbon-si...

From that report from the CSIRO -

"From October 2010 to March 2011, an extraordinary rainfall event occurred over most of Australia, which resulted in three-quarters of Queensland being declared a flood disaster zone – an area as big as France, Germany and Italy combined."

https://blog.csiro.au/record-rains-made-australia-a-giant-green-global-carbon-si...

The drought broke in March 2010

The stupidity of your last post is quite breathtaking
Sure the extraordinary rainfall event was from October 2010 to March 2011, but the drought actually broke in March 2010 (as evidenced in this map).
Given that October to December would be peak growing seasons anyway, you post actually supports my contention that 2010 was an extraordinary year that whatsupwiththat happened to cherry pick very unscientifically  Wink

Its funny that you always try and discredit BOM data because they don't have weather stations covering every square inch of the continent but you uncritically accept whatsupwiththat.com data cherry picked from one of the wettest years this century  Grin Grin Grin.
As I always say, you have one standard for your own evidence and another standard for everyone elses.

So once again i will ask.
Have you got any evidence that Australia is a carbon sink from any other year except 2010?

Also, 2009 and early 2010 were very dry years due to a strong El Niρo. At the end of 2010, however, this shifted dramatically as the combined effect of a strong La Niρa with enhancing influences from the Indian Ocean Dipole and Southern Annular Mode causing record‐breaking precipitation over large parts of Australia. This lasted well into 2012 and has been associated with a global 7 mm drop in the ocean levels [Fasullo et al., 2013].

Last time I checked October and November were spring  Wink

Just admit you are wrong lee instead of playing these endless verbal gymnastics.
It will save us both a lot of time

From your own source

Quote:
Our results show a strong carbon uptake in Australia from the end of 2010 to mid‐2012. This uptake coincided with record‐breaking rainfall and consequent soil moisture increase that lead to increased growth of vegetation

Don't forget that all I need to show is that 2010 was not a typical year and that whatsupwiththat were cherry picking their data. This I have proved.

So. have you got any data from any year other than 2010?

What don't you understand about the end of 2010? Wink

from your own link

Quote:
Based on the calculated 3 monthly fluxes in Figure 4, we estimate the strength of the enhancement of the carbon sink to be roughly 0.21 ± 0.03 Pg C yr−1 or 0.41 ± 0.05 Pg C for the whole period of April 2010 to December 2011, which corresponds to 7% of the total multiyear (1990–2011) average GPP of the Australian biosphere and 270% of the average annual net ecosystem production

Now clearly 2010 was not a typical year which has been unscientifically cherry picked by whatsupwiththat.com

I will ask you once again.
Do you have any evidence that Australia is a carbon sink other than a cherry picked 2010  Wink

Also from your link

Quote:
5 Conclusions

Our results show a significant change in the carbon uptake in Australia during the La Niρa phase from the end of 2010 to early 2012. Due to the record‐breaking rainfall, large‐scale vegetation growth occurred in the arid central region, leading to a strong carbon uptake by the land biosphere of roughly 0.21 ± 0.03 Pg C yr−1 or 0.41 ± 0.05 Pg C for the whole period of April 2010 to December 2011, corresponding to 270% of the total annual net ecosystem production.

You're the one who thought that negative fluxes were CO2 emissions and now you are lying about it to try and save face.

You have zero credibility lee, and you have shown that you are a complete waste of time debating on this forum.

Since you have successfully discredited your own argument about 2010
Can you please present some evidence that Australia is a CO2 sink that isn't 2010?  Wink

Poor petal. You were the one saying that I was wrong when I pointed out to you that negative fluxes were sequestered CO2.

What I said was the blue line in the graphic showed emissions were getting lower in 2010; and they were. In January 2010 it was positive and declined.

Then you were posting about the uptake getting larger and even highlighted a piece over 1year 7 months as 270% which of course tells you nothing about 1 year.

That was due to a combination of factors, including geography and a run of very dry years, followed by record-breaking rains in 2010 and 2011. https://blog.csiro.au/record-rains-made-australia-a-giant-green-global-carbon-si...

...

The modelled net carbon uptake of the Australian landscape in December 2010 at the start of the big wet(top), compared with December 2009 (bottom).

ibid

As I said then if you reduced that figure by 60% it would still show sequestration of about 88MT for 2010. But the 60% was for 2011 and yet you can't get past 2010 being a year of sequestration as well.

If I get things my own way, we would have the interior of the country (around townships) as having large woodlands full of halophyte trees to soak up the saline land and provide some extra shade.

There you go barny you were so desperate to see how much degassing goes on.

14% of Australia's CO2 emissions come from land clearing.

No:1 above

So what's that barny.

Natural CO2e emitted by Australia

Below...............................................13 + 3 = 16%

16% my goodness we don't even emit 1% of the worlds manmade CO2.

It's actually 0.899% manmade CO2 emissions by Australia.

Oh just in case you forgot your maths.

0.16 x 560 = 89.6 million tonnes of CO2e = degassing.... Kiss.......per annum business as usual Australian eco system.

Cant wait to see the bullsh@t you're going to spin.

Quote:
From Wikipedia

The Australian government estimates that Australia's net emissions in 2017 were 556.4 million tonnes CO
2-equivalent, to which the sectoral contributions were approximately as follows: electricity, 33%; transport, 18%; stationary energy (excluding electricity), 17%; agriculture, 13%; fugitive emissions, 10%; industrial processes, 6%; waste, 3%.[3] This includes about 13% for non-electricity residential use.[4]

Now that year was 2011. And 60% higher than normal uptake or 840Mt.

If we reduce 2011 by 60% we get 100/160*840 or 525Mt as a normal figure. And that is Sequestration. No wonder you don't like the CSIRO anymore. Wink

Hi Barny

It’s one thing to claim that my logic and or calculations may not be right.

It’s another thing to not believe the CSIRO when I call up one of their papers that doesn’t suit your agenda.

And then you quote something from the exact same source CSIRO when it does suit your agenda.

And on top then claim who are we going to believe little o’l me (Ajax) against CSIRO scientists.

Therefore the only conclusion one can come to is that you are in denial of anything other than the blue print of Anthropogenic Global Warming as preached by the IPCC.

And further to that is that you cannot have a logically conversation about anything when it comes to AGW because you believe in the IPCC dogma so much.

So I'm quoting the CSIRO and still you do not believe.

The other thing barny is I’m open to all interpretations about AGW.

If in the near or distant future someone can prove that the cause of the current warming is indeed manmade CO2.

Well then I will bite my tongue and apologise to you all.

But at this moment in time I haven’t seen anything to suggest that the current warming of the Earth is solely due to man’s emissions of CO2.

If that time comes I will accept it on the chin and then get on with it, but until such a time all I can try and do is open the sheeples minds and I’m afraid you also fall into this category................ Tongue Kiss

It's actually mid spring.
In fact many countries start their seasons on 21st September so you could make an argument that October is early spring

The millennial drought broke in March 2010.
The extraordinary rainfall event was October (spring) 2010 to March 2011
They are 2 separate events

And how did all this start?
You produced a whatsupwiththat.com article that claimed Australia was a carbon sink, but that only provided data for 2010.
I pointed out that 2010 was unrepresentative as we had bad bush fires in 2009 and the long drought ended in 2010 so there would have been enormous plant growth.

Any sane person would have either acknowledged that 2010 was not a representative year and/or would have provided further evidence that didn't rely on cherry picked data.

lee however, is not a sane person.
His arguments became increasingly pedantic, circular and irrelevant to the point where he was trying to argue that October isn't Spring (it's "coming into summer" apparently  Wink )

Having re read this thread I have come to the conclusion, lee, that you are completely insane

Quote:
(Natural News) The climate change hoax has collapsed. A devastating series of research papers has just been published, revealing that human activity can account for no more than a .01°C rise in global temperatures, meaning that all the human activity targeted by radical climate change alarmists — combustion engines, airplane flights, diesel tractors — has virtually no measurable impact on the temperature of the planet.

Finnish scientists spearheaded the research, releasing a paper entitled, “No Experimental Evidence for the Significant Anthropogenic Climate Change.”

The paper explains that IPCC analysis of global temperatures suffers from a glaring error — namely, failure to account for “influences of low cloud cover” and how it impacts global temperatures. Natural variations in low cloud cover, which are strongly influenced by cosmic radiation’s ability to penetrate Earth’s atmosphere due to variations in the strength of our planet’s magnetosphere, account for nearly all changes in global temperature, the researchers explain.

Except of course that you haven't included bushfires in your calculation. And if it takes 100 years to reabsorb all the CO2 released in the bushfires then your claim that Australia is carbon neutral is debunked

Australia's bushfires are believed to have spewed as much as two-thirds of the nation's annual carbon dioxide emissions in just the past three months, with experts warning forests may take more than 100 years to absorb what's been released so far this season.

Poor Barney. These experts said MAY Barney immediately assumes WILL. Grin Grin Grin Grin

But from the paper -

"Until recently, Australia's forests were thought to reabsorb all the carbon released in bushfires, meaning they achieved net zero emissions, but scientists say climate change is making bushfires burn more intensely and frequently."

Oh noes. Barney's "Australia is not a sink" goes up in flames. Grin Grin Grin Grin

And as I said earlier according to the CSIRO we normally have net sequestration of 525Mt. So it should take perhaps a year.

As usual lee completely misses the point

If Australian forests reabsorb all the CO2 emitted by bushfires for net zero emissions I guess that backs up my claim that Ajax's calculations are wrong in the OP and that Australia is not a Carbon sink

For years now you have obsessively and dutifully responding to every single climate change post. In fact it was amusing to watch you on Christmas day - one by one - responding to every post. Always denying, always coming up with some convoluted explanation or excuse (you haven't mentioned Occam's razor for a while  Wink )

So why have you completely ignored Ajax's thread  "Oz on fire - Corporations playing with our weather"
Surely this would be right up your alley. Human induced weather/climate change.

What has that to do with the price of fish barny..........???

Can you answer the following....?

On one hand we have the United Nations World Meteorological Organisation conducting weather and climate modification programmes in 60 countries around the world.

On the other we have the United Nations IPCC telling us that all these weather events and patterns are due to mans emissions of CO2.

Both the IPCC & WMO are branches of the United Nations.

So why have you ignored it?  Wink

I am guessing because it's an eye-wateringly stupid formulation and for that reason best ignored.

Progs and Gretas like to portray their opponents as 'evil'. That' pretty much prevents any dialogue or honest exchange.  I do not see how human CO2 can possibly determine the climate but I do not say or think that you are 'evil' because you do. You can honestly believe in AGW, I just think you are mistaken.

The Gretas and the snarlers are ridiculed and laughed at but nobody is calling them 'evil'. Just silly.

Maybe try to get your head around the fact that NOT buying the "human CO2 causes climate catastrophe" narrative can be an honestly held view by people who are not evil.

You would then bee on the way to a dialogue.

We have tried doing nothing for the last 25 years, I hear the Temperature is expected to reach 47 degrees through the week ?

Looks like doing nothing is going just great.
