All New Zealand's burns units are at full capacity with patients

Almost all patients who were evacuated from White Island after the eruption have extensive burns to their bodies, a spokesman for the Ministry of Health said.

Spokesman Pete Watson said all of New Zealand's burns units are at capacity.

Out of the 31 people who are still in hospital after the eruption,
27 have burns to at least 30% of their bodies, Watson said.

He said many also have inhalation burns, which will require airway support. The ages of the victims are between 13 and 72, he said.

"It's possible not all of the patients will survive," Watson said.

one hasnt bobby sadly I would think for the best

these injuries are horrific... even for those who are helping them it would be shocking.....children as well OMG it breaks my heart!

There was a camera setup on the rim of the volcano for geological purposes and captured this.

its hard to know where the rim starts or maybe finishes...I had seen that picture thanks xeej and thats what I was referring too......too hard for aussie to work out though...there are always daredevils amongst us who will go right to the edge of everything

no one was on high alert for this to happen sadly looks like no warnings were given out at all....... Cry

Time will tell Bob, I heard an interview with a fixed wing pilot whom was flying above the island liaising with the chopper pilots that landed shortly after the eruption, he stated that a number of bodies were checked for signs of life and deemed to be deceased, when pushed on the number he implied around 7 or 8, these people were left where they lay ,,

they will never recover bobs.... I doubt even the medical staff know where to start...so cruel...skin being flown in from America.....I dont know what to say..they can do wonderful things today but burns .....I dont know its takes many years and still nothing will be the same...

my heart breaks for them......I almost cry watching the news....even those who are not injured are going to suffer for a long time.......its a nightmare!

Sure they wouldn't know when the volcano was about to erupt ... but .... So sad when entire families are missing.

it is what it is chrisP.... like base jumping why do people do it... because they can...

maybe at the end of the day the NZ govt are responsible for allowing it to be used as a tourist attraction.... Sad

.... as it is some folks actually live at the foot of volcanos Roll Eyes

why is anyones guess....

NZ being a target for earthquakes that hit at any time in any place.. you would think they would not have taken this risk...
