A complex web of foreign money helped create GetUp. Then there’s the even murkier network of affiliate organisations that are overseas funded and funnel money to GetUp to support their activities.

GetUp! and their affiliates have received overseas donations worth millions of dollars from a whole range of little-known international activist groups.

There’s a lot of money going to and from organisations across the world – often through smaller affiliate groups as well to minimise tax – so getting to the bottom of exactly how much is very tricky.






DECLARED DONATIONS TO THE AEC IN PREVIOUS YEARS INCLUDE:
$63,693 from the Geneva-based Oak Foundation,
$42,960 from German activist group Campact, and

GetUp are also foundation members of the Online Progressive Engagement Network (OPEN).  OPEN is an international network that provides a range of services to activist organisations around the world – a sort of incubator and training hub to create and fund even more far-left activism.


The Managing Director of OPEN is none other than GetUp’s current Chairman Phil Ireland, while the other Directors are from India, the US, the UK and Germany.


Bizarrely, GetUp has received two separate payments of about 41,000 euros ($65,389) in 2015 and 2016 from Campact, a German organisation as "funds held on trust" in membership fees for the Online Progressive Engagement Network (OPEN).

A GetUp spokeperson explained to SBS News in February 2018 that "(Funds held on trust) are generally used to save on bank transaction fees and foreign exchange fluctuations, or to shift the burden of administering those funds."

Further evidence of foreign influence was revealed recently in a Wikileaks exposure of the emails of Hilary Clinton’s former campaign Chairman John Podesta (who founded the Centre for American Progress). The emails showed that the foreign Sandler Foundation was orchestrating and funding opposition to the Australian Coal Industry through the Sunrise Project.

A congratulatory email from the Sunrise Project’s Executive Director John Hepburn (former head of Greenpeace) credited GetUp, 350.org, Greenpeace, Australian Youth Climate Coalition, Market Forces and the Mackay Conservation Group as working together to block the Adani Mine, with funding from foreign interests.

So the future development of Australia’s economy, in this case our vast natural resources, is being decided by foreign organisations – not Australian voters.

And speaking of services, local GetUp Board member Daniel Stone’s digital campaign company Principle Co lists US-based GetUp funder Avaaz as a client, along with the Labor Party, the ACTU, The Australian Youth Climate Coalition, and the Maritime Union.

GetUp’s radical activism includes biased targeting, kickbacks, sweetheart deals, and employing disingenuous tactics.


CASE STUDY – TARGETING THE CHILDREN
GetUp recently released a “hit list” of 16 MPs they want out of Parliament at the coming federal election. These are MPs who support strong border protection laws, lower energy prices, and literacy testing for migrants. They are being targeted because GetUp don’t like their views.

GetUp claim to be independent but not a single Labor MP is on their hit list. Every one of them is a Coalition Member.

GetUp have already mobilised teams in many of these seats – to disrupt the MP’s campaign, to work for opponents and to spend millions of dollars in online and on-the-ground campaigning.



AND THEY'VE GOT FORM...
GetUp used volunteers to call 85,000 voters in the recent Wentworth by-election, had hundreds of people handing out how to vote cards, and spent hundreds of thousands on billboards and advertising – to make sure the Liberal Party could not win the seat.

GetUp also spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on advertising and campaigning and made 27,000 calls to local voters in the Longman by-election to make sure Labor held the seat.

GetUp! spent more than $140,000 in the Tasmanian federal seat of Bass at the 2016 election to defeat Liberal MP Andrew Nikolic, who had served as an Army Officer in Iraq. GetUp used 10 paid staff and 80 volunteers to win the seat for Labor.

GetUp’s “whatever it takes” approach can have profound effects on the organisations and people that they target and their methods are unethical as well as unfair.

Judge for yourself.  Just a few examples of GetUp’s tactics include:

Advocating boycotts of products and organisations that they don’t agree with – including Harvey Norman for selling furniture made from timber!

Targeting disruptive protests at companies they don’t agree with – for example those that run or provide services for immigration detention centres.

Putting “spoof” ads in newspapers to ridicule and campaign against the Business Council of Australia.

Forcing Extraordinary General Meetings on Australian companies, costing hundreds of thousands of dollars, in order to inconvenience them and advance GetUp’s causes.

Using some local indigenous people to launch legal action in order to stop mining projects that would create jobs in regional areas – especially for indigenous job seekers.

Organising spam email campaigns to inundate parliamentarians or businesses in order to influence opinion. Their live cattle exports campaign cost many northern Australian cattle farmers their livelihoods and, ironically, caused the painful deaths of cattle that were unable to be fed or sold.

Using donations to pay $31,000 for a charity dinner with then Prime Minister Gillard in order to force discussion of their same sex marriage campaign.

Spending $118,000 on television advertising and orchestrating thousands of spam emails to stop State Governments from agreeing to the National Energy Guarantee which was set to lower energy prices.

GetUp even received an official warning from the Australian Electoral Commission when they used gold bullion prizes to lure young people to their site to enrol to vote and sign on to join their campaigns.

BANK COMMISSIONS
GetUp’s 2018 accounts show it earned $452,190 in just 2 years from Bank Australia in a sweetheart deal that pays GetUp 0.4 per cent of the value of home loans and $50 on accounts with monthly deposits of more than $2000.

So GetUp encourages their members to switch to a “responsible bank that shares their values” and voila – a nice little earner.

RADICAL RETAILERS
GetUp also has a cosy arrangement with online retailer Gorman - producing a “Coal Kills” tote bag with all proceeds going to GetUp - to boost its campaign coffers and promote its war on coal.

Cosmetics company Lush donated all proceeds of their charity pots to #stopadani, who GetUp promote, and whose website is authorised by The Sunrise Project. The Sunshine Project in turn donated half a million dollars to GetUp. Lush itself donated $117,404 directly to GetUp over the last two years for political campaigning.

"DONATIONS"
Many of the groups that team up with GetUp are actually registered charities. $262,000 was funnelled to GetUp – but it came via green Group Friends of the Earth, which has charitable status so the donation was tax deductible for millionaire Graeme Wood. This means that Australian taxpayers paid for practically half of the “donation” that ultimately went to GetUp.
