its not a matter of danger.
its a matter of feeling yourself "outside of the herd" and being comfortable with that.
egg boy is part of a herd and he is signalling to his herd.

as grappler said, he could have given the money to curtis changs family but that would have put him "outside the safety of the herd". that is not going to happen
