A black lung advocacy group says there have been almost 20 new diagnoses of coal dust diseases in Queensland workers in the past two weeks and there are many more likely coming.
The diseases are solely caused by prolonged exposure to coal mine dust and are potentially fatal.
The Mine Dust Diseases Victims Group chair and former member for Mirani, Jim Pearce, said victims will meet with Federal MPs in the coming days about establishing an industry fund to support affected workers.
He said there were now 102 confirmed cases of mine-dust-related diseases in the state, with 250 more suspected cases awaiting assessment by experts in the United States.

Coal is just a nasty product and I feel sorry for those living around coal power stations having to breath in all the poisons that spew out of the smoke stacks around Australia as well. Wink

That the state does regular inspections. That the regulations specify what safety gear must be worn. Is it that certain workers don't "do" safety gear?

I doubt it, Miners are know for being anal about safety, actually any construction in QLD is very conforming and regulated. Wink

The best method would be to not mine it at all.

sorry couldn't help myself.... I know they are having the same problem in the USA too,,, either the filters are not working or they are not policed enough or the dust is getting in the lungs on the coal mine property where the miners think its safe... im sure workplace health and safety will be investigating to work out the problem....

yup really doesn't matter how it has happened, what is important that it is happening and it's usually fatal.
Will it be like asbestos…. will they change safety measures, stop mining coal or buy the victims out ?
