I posted a map the other day showing signatories to the refugee convention and that clearly shows Australia is not the first place these people could have claimed asylum.

Irrelevant.

They can claim wherever they like.

Oh how wrong you are. A person seeking asylum can have their claim declared null and void if they’re found to have bypassed or passed through a country that is a UNHCR refugee signatory. Look it up on the UNHCR site if you don’t believe me.
