Greens Push For Mandatory Solar For New Homes

NSW Greens push for mandatory solar and batteries for all new homes   Smiley

February 11, 2019
Sydney Morning Herald

The bidding war among NSW political parties over solar panels has been joined by the Greens who want photovoltaic systems and batteries to be made compulsory for all new dwellings.

The Greens would also introduce a $2000 rebate for the introduction of panels plus storage for half a million homes as part of $1.25 billion boost over four years for the sector.

Cleaning up: solar PV demand is soaring - and political parties are seeking to accelerate the take-up in NSW.

All public housing and government buildings would get panels too at a cost of $250 million, with 110,000 public housing tenants in line to receive electricity rebates, according to the Greens' policy aimed at the March 23 state election.   Smiley

“It is negligent that in 2019 we have over 70,000 new dwellings in NSW every year and no requirement for solar panels on these developments," Cate Faehrmann, the Greens environment spokeswoman, said. Owners of new dwellings would pay into a renewable energy offset scheme as an alternative to adding panels or storage.

The Greens' policy follows Labor's launch on Saturday of its plan to support 500,000 households get solar, with a rebate capped at $2200 for households with annual income of $180,000 or less.

The Berejiklian government followed a day later with the release of a scheme offering no-interest loans for solar energy and batteries for as many as 300,000 owner-occupied households.

For those living in flats or renting, the Greens would set up an offset scheme to buy credits for solar arrays on their building or offsite. Some 20 per cent of all private dwellings in the state are apartments, while about 32 per cent of residents are renting - people who are currently "locked out of the benefits of roof top solar,"  the Greens said.

Home solar increases the risk of electrocution, because tripping the fuse does not isolate your home. There are two sources you need to isolate.

It is also far more difficult to maintain. The solar panels from 100 homes could go on a single large factory roof, which would be cheaper and safer to clean, service etc.

Been saying that for years - ever since we occasionally drove past Cambra Airport on our way North and saw all those huge buildings.. my first comment was - why not solar panel roofs?

On next move from hinterland to oceanside, I'm planning a roof system excess to requirements, a wind generator, solar hot water, and batteries... if the power companies play up too much - I'll go stand alone and increase my battery size.  Cut 'em off at the pass....

Falc 'em all!

I recently visited Yealands Winery, in NZ.

...

The entire roof in solar panels.

Is this solar supposed to feed into the grid? The same grid that AEMO has had to wind back the contributions of solar and wind due to intermittency concerns.

What intermittency ? Solar PV generates maximum peak power during the day when there is peak demand due to industry and air conditioning etc. Just build enough of them and you solve most of your problems.

By law all accredited PV inverters have anti-islanding so this should never be a problem.

yes petal. Even on dark overcast winter's day they generate that wonderful 30% efficiency? Wink

And don't forget those poor singles who come home at evening to a boiling hot house; will they want to cool the house before bed?

I did a post somewhere where the power to just 3 hospitals in Melbourne's CBD accounted for far more than the entire renewable output in AUSTRALIA.

Oh, only most of the problems?

But tell us just how many PV's need to be built to be enough?

Check AEMO for renewables "conditioning".
