What should be done with the Murray Darling
Feb 2nd, 2019 at 11:11am

I personally think whats happened in the Murray darling is an absolute disgrace and badly needs some serious attention.

Whilst I accept a large portion of the issues  are due to the drought more needs doing especially after the 4 Corners water theft exposure

I think the massive fish kills are way more than normal and it is not good enough that some towns are having dirty brown water as their water supply because of this.

I think it should be controlled by one authority not a dogs breakfast with all the states and commonwealth involved as it appears now.

Serious thought should even be given to limiting high irrigation crops such as cotton

I am not sure if this is correct but any pump fed open canals feeding off  the rivers should be replaced by piping

I will be interested to see what comes out of this SA RC but already NSW govt are poo hooing their findings

What are your thoughts?

Farmer must pump his 'quota' of water all over his property, regardless if he needs it or not. Because if he uses less, his 'quota' for next term will be reduced.
So you have a list of Farmers all along the Murray-Darling, making sure they use their 'full' quota of water up. The system is being drained at full capacity always, every term, every year.
That's why the South Australians are bordering on violence when the subject of their 'trickle' comes to discussion.
Word of advice: DO NOT bring up the issue of Water Irrigation in a South Australian Pub.  Shocked

CANALS OF MARS

This is a Topic I brought up in the Forum many many years ago.

Having also been given a private personal tour of the Riverina Irrigation set up by the Chairman of Irrigation out there.
There is no other way - but to introduce a sophisticated 'network' of WATERWAYS to retain, conserve, preserve, attain and transfer Water around the interior of Australia.

It's time to 'create' the mythical
INLAND SEA
from a mirage to a miracle!

Example: It rains heavily around the Coffs Harbour Region often - and instead of 20 metres of fresh rain water flowing out to sea, it is captured by the towns, and rural waterways and 'transported' inland via Canals and Pipes.

I've sat down at the Table with Sydney Water long ago.
They all shake their heads at the Sydney system that allows Megalitres of Storm Water to waste out at sea.

Even the Monsoonal Northern Territory has room to maneuver its wet season to other parts of the continent via Pipe and Canal.

The South Americans used mini-Canal systems to irrigate their massive (drug) Crops (made them very paranoid of raven haired men with pale skin and very shiny silvery armour).

Romans transported Water via Aquaducts.

Basically, the POLITICIANS can only do so much.
Well, they only take a political avenue of enterprise.

Australia is so lazy.
It does nothing to help itself.
Cries poor downtrodden convict all the time for another hand-out.

It's about time, Australia takes 'PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY' and supports itself.
Construction of a continental system of intricate and at times, massive - network of irrigation Canals and Containment Lakes will not only improve the Australian interior water situation, but it will also 'moisturise' the inland (via evaporation during the day) as 'dew' during the nights.

Before you know it - the interior of Australia will be as productive as the Nile Delta (and a few other such things around the world in 'deserts').

Stop fart arsing around with Political answers.
Politics is not an answer for everything.
If you seek a Political Answer for this, beyond just a stamp of approval.
All you will get is more 'paperwork', less water.

Before 1788. The Inland waterways of Australia were all 'crystal clear' freshwater.
Allowing farmers to have stock 'trample' the edges of all these waterways have destroyed the natural 'nurseries' of all the native fish... resulting in artificial 'Hatcheries' (like at Nerrandera) to put fish back into the waterways.

...if it FLOODS in one part of the country, then have 'Waterways' (Canals) to drain it and transport it to a part of the country that is in DROUGHT.

(Meerkat: "Simples"  Wink)

Yeah Jasin I too have wondered why we couldnt be pumping up over the tablelands from the massive east coast rivers in northern NSW to feed inland dams /rivers

It has been claimed the energy required to pump would make it too expensive however I think with the cost of solar now so low, a large solar farm set up purely to power the pumping during sunlight hours (if necessary) could surely pump the equivalent of an average inland river.

worth looking into, I remember reading in the desert in Arabia they r using solar to desalinate water and using solar panels along the joining pipeline to pump the water to towns Smiley

I think this as I stated in the OP is the real issue

I think it should be controlled by one authority not a dogs breakfast with all the states and commonwealth involved as it appears now.

Oh I'm sure Mr Efron could tunnel through much of the steep inclines/gradients to pipe excess water through and the 'energy cost' would be recovered in the productivity of the water being put to use out there.

...meanwhile, they are still trying to 'sneak' Tunnels for the Cities because of over-population in them causing excessive traffic. Imagine if the entire 'Outback' of Australia opened up as a jobs boom in agriculture! No more over-crowded coastal cities.

No CODS, PZ is right - you're doing well and he's not taking the Mickey out of you (in fact, given the chance, he would put the mickey in you if you let him Wink).

Anyway. About 5 years ago - the Federal Government was thinking about spending $10 BILLION to 'replicate' the Irrigation Scheme of the Riverina - up in the Diamantina Region of northern Australia. After that - nothing much has been said or seen about it??

Arabs would 'tunnel' water vast distances with 'drop wells' every so often along them. It was a very clever innovation of transporting water, beyond the touch of the sun.

There are many different ideas and many do work.
But as of yet - the Australian Government is not going to spend big money on something that benefits the future of this country while the Aboriginals still lay claim over 'everything' (even Australia Day).

With a vast network of carefully planned 'Artery/Vein' Network of Water Canals/Pipes all around the nation. Maybe one day, the 'natural' waterways will be left alone to become  'crystal clear' again?

Driving Taxi. I had to take a passenger from the Airport a good 30mins away. He just happened to be extremely 'high up' in the Water Management of the Country and travelled this country far and wide.
He did agree with me on one point: Farmers allowing 'hoofed' stock to trample the waterway edges and ruin the quality of the waterway.
There should be a 50-100m wide 'restriction zone' along every waterway from Farming. Just like there is with Sydney's water supply for quality reasons.

Not sure about the bird watchers though.  Are there any birds left?

Having said that, it's probably exactly who they would bring in as 'experts'.

There is no shortage of water in Australia -
the water that falls in the tropics mostly gets washed out to sea.
We need a giant North South pipeline to bring the water South.
The pipe needs to be large & made of stainless steel so it will last forever.

How much water is wasted in the tropics?
Is it 10 Sydney harbors full every year?

There are many around the world.

A good start would be the experts who helped transform Singapore from a place that had no fresh water resources to one that pumps in 60% from Malaysia and the rest from its own geo-forming transformation of resevoirs and 'canal' Stormwater systems that encapsulate a region that gains x3 times more rainfall than England.

It's all about 'planning' and Singapore is a well planned region. Sadly for Singapore though, it doesn't know how to say "No - we are full." and because of that, their ship will list and sink, so to speak - because of over-population.

So how many more times the overall rainfall in Australia would that be? And what would they know about water, or lack thereof, in Australia?

the flooding is happening 1000 kilometres away..... what will dams do ?
Ohh course the biggist problem is the great dividing range most of the rain happens east of it and the murry river souse is west .
r u suggesting a pipeline to Toowoomba ?
will Queensland pay for it or the Commonwealth or the 4 states involved (thanks Lee now I know sa is in the mix)
I sense your frustration Cods... but just pointing out what is wrong or being vague like we need Experts doesn't seam to help much.....

As mentioned on Insiders today ... If the states keep stuffing up the rivers plan, the Feds will wind up taking control of the whole system.

well as I have said   I DONT HAVE THE ANSWERS...

but I do believe someone in the world DOES HAVE THEM...

why anyone would think the Feds would have more brains than the States I will never know...

lets be honest they are all EMPIRE BUILDERS.. its about VOTES...

we seem capable of building Gas pipe lines across our hostile terrain why not water pipe lines....

with massive pumps powered by SOLAR....

instead of DAM floodgates being opened sending zillions of buckets of more water   onto already flooded homes....which is what happens now....  Cheesy

first Ipswich now Townsville. Angry

now that IS CRAZY. Angry

when these places have their massive floods... what usually every 30 years nothing stops the water..... How big would a pipeline have to be to stop flooding in one of these events ?
I dont think we r advanced enough to be able to harness these massive floods. they r just 2 big for us as humans to make a diferance. Wink

1)We need to develop my ultra efficient solar desalination invention.
2) We wait for it to rain.
3)Try and grow something on the Ord (near impossible)
4) We stop growing food and import it all from China.

very good advice mike.... GIVE IN in other words...

its far too expensive  you didnt mention that

cheaper to have a  ROYAL  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes that fixes everything..lol

btw you forget we animals need water not just veggies..

but dont let that worry you.. think about the cost...and the magnitude its all too much today............

all I can say is thank god for the pioneers we had all those years ago when all they had was a compass and a pickaxe.......amazing people who could see into the future. and knew instinctively what had to be done....

what pioneers would that be Cods... They did the same thing every invader did from Europe... they tried to make it England, totally ignore the native ppl that had survived for thousands of years here.
They worked against the land instead of with it and we now r reaping those times with a dead Murry River..... Wink

OK

I knew you had the answers..

blame someone else...never give them any credit..

of course not!!! Angry Angry

Credit for what cods ?  Wink
What did the pioneers of this country do to make this a sustainable place.. what foresight did they have to make sure things like the Murry , erosion, ferral animals, soil degration, land poisoning happen..... Yes they where pioneers but I don't think they did more than survive (little on think of the future) and fought nature every step of the way to make a mark. Wink

yet its the number one factor in our very existence...

so where do the Arabs get their running water from?...

I believe they too live in very hostile territory

They eat with one hand and wipe with the other Cods, No running water involved lol

What a stupid comment.

A bloke by the name of John Bradfield came up with a solution in 1938. No one took him seriously. Consecutive governments since have ignored it. We need to revive the scheme and update it. Bugger the cost. Tunnel through the dividing range, and bury the pipes the rest of the way to minimise loss die to evaporation.

Why can we pipe gas around the country, but not water?

Between North Qld, the Northern territory and North WA, we get more than enough rainfall to meet the countries needs.

Bradfield sounds like a man with a vision for the future.

no place for a man like that according to experts on here.

Of course it was. Afterall, there is no god to send anything. Still, a silly comment considering..

sounds like a great idea, with solar panels and a good borer like the one from the boring Company it might actually be feasible....As technology gets better plans like this could become a reality. Wink
I think most of the posters on this thread have had the same plan of pumping coastal water to the interior Cods...…. Wink

As soon as you have to move water over long distances, desalination becomes cheaper.
Which is why there is no pipeline from the Ord south.

ahh good point... I wonder if the ones that have been made can be relooked at and see if maybe solar panels could make them more feasible...…
or r they just badly designed and need to be bulldozed down and start again .Wink

We can bring the water south as soon as we invent a perpetual motion machine,,, oh yes we may need an anti gravity machine as well,,, or perhaps a time machine just go back in time to when it rained.

My desalination machine is probably the best option.

well you know mike   we have put a man on the moon  they are busy spending zillions on finding life on Mars and Pluto..this shouldnt be hard at all... both wind and sun being permanent residence of Qld....what could be cheaper?????.....anything at all is worth considering rather than doing nothing   just complaining..
