Hazelwood in Victoria was privatised by the Libbos under Kennett.

Hazelwood Power Station and associated mine were privatised by the Kennett government in 1996
after many years of downsizing under a 'structural efficiency' model undertaken by the then state Liberal government.

I'd want a kickarse Govt regulator to have unlimited power and for the plants to be 51% govt owned.

And where did you get 20 years from? A modern plant would be virtually immoral as all components can be replaced

Uranium nuclear power plants operate at high pressures -
normally 70 atmospheres!
They are nothing but time bombs waiting to explode.

That's why we need safe, cheap, Thorium power now.
A molten salt commercial Thorium reactor can't be made fast enough.

A few test units in a few years but it seems like a good to follow. Looks like the Chinese are doing the heavy lifting here.

so they will make a working model... then test it about 5 years then plan for a full size 5 -10 years after that and they r still in the Planning stage.... so id say 20-30 years before we see any around Smiley

No matter what they say I don't think I could support a 4th gen either on just the word of the engineers that it will be safe... id like to see one working a few years before Australia commits Wink

France has 58 reactors and a very good safety record.

If they can do it, knowing they're usually sozzled on vin rouge after 3pm, so can we Wink

Wiki has a good starting point on the different type of 4th gens..... I really like the idea of using salt and being contained.... would use no water , and hot enough to have many by products (like making hydrogen ) Wink

It's like Electric cars I don't care if they use Lithium Battery's , solid state or what chemistry….I'm really only interested in how well they can perform and can they replace the terrible inefficient and poisonous Fossil Fuels Vehicles that r the norm now. Wink
