A spokesperson for Citipower/PowerCor/United Energy, whose distribution areas cover most of western Victoria, Melbourne suburbs and the Mornington Peninsula, said 16,900 customers had lost power in the previous 24 hours but the number was down to a few hundred by Friday morning.

Jemena, which covers part of Melbourne's western suburbs, said about 2,500 customers had lost power at some stage with all but about 150 restored by Friday morning.

Grid at breaking point
AusNet Services, which ordered the Portland smelter to cut its power use between about 7.10 pm and 8.50 pm on Thursday after being told to shed power load urgently by AEMO, did not detail its residential outages in its coverage area of eastern Victoria.

Most of the residential outages were due to heat stress, damaged underground cables and business as usual issues such as animals or fallen branches on power lines.

The Portland smelter outage - which Alcoa complained was involuntary and not under its voluntary agreement with AEMO - was due to a slack of supply in the power grid as the extreme heat pushed demand beyond expectations in Victoria and South Australia.

The grid has been pushed to breaking point in southeastern Victoria by unscheduled plant failures at coal and gas power stations operated by EnergyAustralia and AGL Energy, and poor wind generation in SA during Thursday's oppressive heat which broke records in Adelaide and other SA towns.

Most of the 25,000 homes in Adelaide's western suburbs which were without power last night after localised problems with transformers after blistering heat, had electricity supplies restored by 8.30am.

SA Power Networks, the company which runs the poles and wires infrastructure in the state, said about 1,000 customers across the state were without power at 8.30am.

SA Power Networks said blown fuses on transformers in localised areas had been behind the localised outages on Thursday night. The temperature had still been 35 degrees at 10pm, before as cool change arrived.

Reliable power generation
The western suburb of Fulham Gardens was the worst affected, with up to 15,000 households without power because of a fault in a sub-station.

It comes as the ALP's spokesman on energy, Tom Koutsantonis, said Premier Steven Marshall should immediately halt plans to privatise the back-up diesel generators which AEMO ordered be turned on at 5.30pm on Thursday to inject extra power into the national grid because of supply shortfalls in Victoria.

Mr Koutsantonis and then Premier Jay Weatherill were behind a $550 million package of energy infrastructure measures in 2017 to bolster the fragile SA grid, with the back-up diesel generators part of that plan.

Thursday marked the first time they had been used in a commercial setting. One of the banks of large diesel generators is located at the former Holden car-making plant in Adelaide's northern suburbs.

Federal energy minister Angus Taylor said the conditions experienced over the last two weeks reinforce the need for investment in reliable generation.

"That is why the Government is backing in new reliable generation investment through its Underwriting New Generation Investments program and the Retailer Reliability Obligation," he said.

The failure of so many thermal power stations exacerbated the shortage of wind generation in SA on Thursday and underlined the vulnerability of ageing plants to extreme heat. A second 370 MW unit unit at EnergyAustralia's Yallourn plant went offline early Friday for repairs to a boiler tube.

The utility had kept the unit in operation at reduced capacity through the worst of Thursday's grid crisis after discovering the fault on Wednesday, but finally had to take it offline because the condition of the tube leak deteriorated, a spokesman said.

144 MW large solar
493 MW small solar
0 MW from Wind

Simple solution is to build more solar !! What's the problem ?

Cost and Toxic waste from Solar panels along with the fact solar doesn't work at night.

Try mirrors and molten salts which also works at night Wink

After poisoning the Murray Darling river with your greed you've got a cheek to talk about toxic waste from solar panels. Cheesy LOL

What a joke the LNP is. Always busy convincing everyone else not to do anything instead of doing the job that needs to be done Sad

Hey Bobby

I think energy corporations have an easy way out now.

ENGIE ran Hazelwood which required $400 million dollar upgrade to meet new pollution standards.

So ENGIE being the environmentally friendly corporation that it is closed Hazelwood stating that,

"Making climate policy a priority"

Easy way out no one will question a friend of the environment who shuts down a power station with old technology.

Hands up those that think corporations really do give 2 cents about the environment over profits......?

Hazelwood was run into the ground by a French company.
They wrung the last penny out of it and then ran away with loot.

I agree.

But corporation don't maintain rather they let it run to the ground before essential maintenance is required.

Boilers and such should be monitored and maintained at least a few times a year every year from my experience.

Not only when they break down.

Like telecommunications, privatization of the electricity supply has been a monumental failure Sad

Animals on power lines, does anyone believe this BS?

The government is saying renewables aren't reliable and we need reliable sources of electricity, Nuclear is cleaner compared to diesel and reliable it can also provide cheap off peak power so people can run their AC on hot nights.

The power companies make more money from renewables, the subsidies offered make it far more attractive.

How about cutting all subsidies then the cheapest forms of power will win.
