I suspected you were already were using one.

I have looked...found none free, but they are cheap as chips.

If you are lucky free VPN's will just be slow and restricted. The other questions are can you trust the provider.

There is a real possibility that you end up less secure and not more secure. The other issue is that depending on the set up of the internet provider you have the VPN may not block them from monitoring particularly if it is legislated that they have to do it. There are corporate products that can monitor VPN traffic.
