Julia Banks quits the LNP

https://www.smh.com.au/politics/federal/morrison-government-shock-julia-banks-quits-the-liberal-party-to-sit-on-the-crossbench-20181127-p50il8.html

Ms Banks, one of the Liberals’ star recruits at the last federal election, will join other independents in the House of Representatives after months of frustration over the party’s treatment of women and disunity over energy and climate change.

She is from VIC – I wouldn't be surprised if other VIC mp's are doing the same – the LNP have a real problem.

Will they even make it to next year?

Whilst I support Julia Banks for having an actual conscience, it gets on my goat that politicians can simply quit a party and move to another party or be "independent" after being elected on a particular party's ticket.

This is especially galling in the Senate where we have seen a number of these people simply quit the party under which they were elected and sit there on high salaries and massive pensions thumbing their noses at the voting public.  Angry

"Following the leadership coup in August I announced my decision that I will not recontest the seat of Chisholm at the next election as a member of the Liberal Party.

I’ve always put the People before the Party. After being a Labor held seat for 18 years – the people of Chisholm elected me as I promised them that I would be their representative under the leadership of the former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and former Deputy Leader and Foreign Minister Julie Bishop. Both visionary, inspiring leaders of sensible centrist liberal values with integrity, intellect and with significant support from my local community and across Australia, as leaders of our nation.

The gift of time and reflection has provided some clarity regarding the brutal blow against the leadership. Led by members of the reactionary right wing, the coup was aided by many MPs trading their vote for a leadership change in exchange for their individual promotion, preselection endorsements or silence. Their actions were undeniably for themselves. For their position in the Party. Their power. Their personal ambition. Not for the Australian people who we represent. Not for what people voted for in the 2016 election. Not for stability. And disregarding that teamwork and unity delivers success.

The aftermath of those dark days in August then acutely laid bare the major parties’ obstructionist and combative actions and internal games. All for political point scoring rather than for timely, practical sensible decisions on matters which Australians care about.

Equal representation of men and women in this Parliament is an urgent imperative which will create a culture change. There’s the blinkered rejection of quotas and support of the ‘merit myth’ but this is more than a numbers game. Across both major parties the level of regard and respect for women in politics is years behind the business world. There is also a clear need for an independent and whistleblower system as found in many workplaces to enable reporting of misconduct of those in power without fear of reprisal or retribution. Often when good women ‘call out’ or are subjected to bad behaviour – the reprisals, backlash and commentary portrays them as the bad ones; the liar, the troublemaker, emotionally unstable or weak, or someone who should be silenced. To those who say politics is not for the faint hearted and that women have to ‘toughen up’ – I say this: the hallmark characteristics of the Australian woman (and I’ve met thousands of them) be they in my local community, in politics, business, the media and sport – are resilience and a strong authentic independent spirit.

The voice of the Australian people has been loud and clear. Hundreds from my local community as well as hundreds more from across Australia contacted me with their support and (knowing that my life from humble and hardworking migrant heritage has been in the business real world and not as a career politician ) many pleaded that I stay in politics and become an independent representative. My sensible centrist values, belief in economic responsibility and focus on always putting the people first and acting in the nation’s interest have not changed. The Liberal Party has changed. Largely due to the actions of the reactionary and regressive right wing who talk to themselves rather than listening to the people.

To continue to put the People before the Party and act in the nation’s interest authentically and constructively – effective immediately I will serve as a Member of House of Representatives as an Independent Representative. I intend to give the Government my assurance as to confidence and supply. In the new year, I will make a decision about my future career path. Like the three female Independent Representatives – the new Member for Wentworth, the Member for Mayo and the Member for Indi – sensible centre liberal values are at the core of what I stand for

As a result of this political journey I am grateful to have met so many wonderful people from across the political divide who I know will respect my decision and with whom I hope I will have enduring friendships. I am so proud to serve as a member of the House of Representatives with honour and respect because of the good People it represents. The People that the major parties have stopped listening to. The Australian People.”

She isn't the first to quit the Liberals since the last election (Bernardi) and she may not be the last.

Wait until the government gets their much-deserved whacking. Then the Libsplit will be on.

Liberal MP Julia Banks says she could live on $40 a day   Angry
May  2 2018 New Daily.

A Liberal MP has claimed she could live on $40 a day “knowing the government is supporting me” as debate grows about the rate of welfare payments in Australia.

With leading economist Chris Richardson on Wednesday arguing an increase in Newstart was more crucial for the economy than a return to a budget surplus, Julia Banks was asked if she believed she could live on current unemployment benefits.

“I could live on 40 bucks a day knowing the government is supporting me with Newstart to look for employment,” Ms Banks replied in an interview on ABC Radio.

Interviewer Rafael Epstein asked Ms Banks, who holds a marginal seat in Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs, whether the payment was too low.

“No, I don’t think it is,” she said.

Asked where she would live on $40 a day, Ms Banks declined to say, but argued the payment “was not a supplement for a wage”.

“We can’t just keep throwing billions of dollars at Newstart. Then the economy just flags,” she replied.

Ms Banks said she did not support Mr Richardson’s $3 billion a year proposal to lift the payment by $50, saying it would be too costly to the budget.

“I was speaking to a constituent the other day who was on Newstart and who now has a job, and that is what Newstart is designed to do,” Ms Banks said.

Her comments come as welfare groups push for an increase in the rate of Newstart, which has not risen in real terms since 1994.

The maximum fortnightly payment for a person on Newstart is $545.80 for someone who is single, and $590.40 for someone with a child. The payments are increased to CPI.

Mr Richardson called for Newstart and Youth Allowance to be increased by $50 a week and tied to wages.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten on Wednesday committed Labor to a “root and branch” review of welfare payments, saying they were insufficient.

“I do think there’s a real problem for the government payments for the people at the very bottom of our society,” he said.

“That is why Labor has proposed having a root and branch review of our government’s payment system on Newstart and like-minded allowances and payments.

“Who on earth amongst the government or anyone in the Parliament could live on the Newstart allowance?”   Angry

Asked if Newstart’s $40 a day rate was “cruel”, Jobs Minister Michaelia Cash said the government was focused on “getting people off welfare and into work”.

“The best form of welfare is a job,” she said.

“It is there to provide a basic safety net for those who are looking for work who are on welfare.”

Greens senator Rachel Siewert said the payments should be increased by $75, describing the current situation for welfare recipients as “unconscionable”.

South Australian independent senator Tim Storer has also backed a real terms increase in welfare payments, saying it could be funded by extending the GST to financial services.

An Anglicare report released on Monday found that of the 67,000 rental listings surveyed across Australia, only three were affordable for a single person on Newstart.   Sad

Even though it's been explained to you before, you STILL haven't worked out why the incumbent PM usually leads that measure. Here's a clue - the incumbent leads because they are the PM.

In other words, the easiest way to make Shorten the preferred PM is to vote him in at the next election.

Shorten does in fact suffer from a very low popularity rating.

In Australia, it is normally not possible to win Government with a leader rating below 40% as Preferred PM.

HOWEVER ... in Shorten's case, the COALition has sullied its brand to such an extent that Shorten will be an exception to that norm.

Shorten is a very lucky man.

Maybe a process where recruited representatives can find out that the Party is morally bankrupt and incompetent before being elected ?

Funny how Banks blame the right, when it is actually the party’s left that has been to blame for trashing the party.

I agree with her, whats the point when the party is ran by a few faceless men holding bean counters, and do whatever they wish.

does anyone else agree with me    when they get elected on a PARTY ticket....if they cant stand the heat in the kitchen   then they should get out

to me we are allowing them to hoodwink the voters  by allowing them to sit on the  Indies benches  filinf their nails...

its bloody disgusting   in the real world if you were employed to do a certain job   then decided you didnt want to do that job anymore......

would you seriously expect to sit on the sidelines getting paid all the while.... while someone else did your job...
