lol

what do you think is the hourly wage rate for the farmer who owns the business, has all the responsibility, has to worry about everything and take all the stress.

probably about 1/2 what the entitled unionised workforce think they should get.

i would advice him to sell the farm to a big conglomerate that can employ some hard working 457 visa holders and bypass the lazy union chodes

If he can't work his business well enough to have to do that, I have no sympathy.

hopefully expand work for the dole so the unemployed can feel the joy of contribution as they help feed the nation

Work for the dole is going bye-bye after the next election. Get used to that.

If you want unemployed Australians to do the work, slash the unemployment red tape burden and abolish the disincentives. As long as government restrictions make it unviable for unemployed workers to buy a camper van and travel around the country doing the harvest work, how can any sane person expect them to do it?

Yes the Coalition are known to sell off the family farm to the highest bidder....Like Andrew Robb leasing the port of Darwin to the Chinese for 99 years, quitting Parliament and then going to work for this Chinese company for $880 000 a year as a consultant....The list of Coalition MP's who sell out Australia and then work for their foreign masters is staggering....Thank's for pointing this out Aqua!!!

I like the idea of workers getting the proper pay.

What it will do to our agricultural industries is to turn back the clock.
Back to when farms were smaller, most of the work was done by the owner operators.
I noticed in the US the only reason they could have the huge sized horticultural operations was because they had abundant cheap/ illegal workers from Mexico.

Owner operators will survive price crashes, they are effectively working for very low wages for a while, but corporate farms dont have the option of subsidising their business with low wages (without breaking the law)

Another possible side benefit is also we may see better quality produce in our domestic markets.

The large corporate farms rely on unskilled staff that just dont do as good a job as most owner operators.
Some growers will still be grubs and produce rubbish cheaply however.

Its interesting, I have seen the change in our horticultural industries and lamented on the industrialisation of our products which has ruined the quality.

Its ironic that the industrials have QA systems in place, but they never ever work.

The other thing that is going on is companies trying to monopolise varieties via plant patents and deals with retailers, greed usually undoes any benefit from that in the end.

What you're forgetting is that the supermarket duopoly is already making large profits from food while paying our farmers a pittance. If farmers were offered better prices, they wouldn't be under so much pressure to underpay the workers.

We should also look at alternative farming practices.

Brazilian food forests take root in Australia, helping growers save water and control pests

wow , so many inspectors and so few productive people.

probably best to sell the apple orchards to the chinese and then borrow money off the chinese to buy the apples back.

sound like a good plan  Whiteknight?

all the unemployed farmers can go on newstart and then we can borrow more money from the chinese to raise the dole so that you dont have to go  Cry Cry Cry Cry all over the place.

of course the next generation will be screwed but its important that those who currently contribute nothing still get to live a life of luxury

Looks like someone has taken your advice.

"A Chinese investment company has bought two of the Northern Territory's biggest watermelon farms for $27.5 million, in what is one of the most significant horticultural deals in the NT's history.

The Hong Kong-based CK Hutchinson Holdings bought Stuart and Kane Younghusband's melon farms near Mataranka, which cover a combined area of about 1,900 hectares.

The new owners have signed a 10-year lease with the New South Wales-based Rombola Family Farms, which was this year found to have sold rockmelons contaminated with listeria, which led to a miscarriage and the deaths of seven people."

Why do coalition supporters like aqua insist that workers not being paid their entitlements?  They aren't asking for more (yet), just what is legally theirs.

They should feel honoured to work on a farm and make a contribution and when the boss says thanks they can take that thanks and exchange it for good and services out in the real world,  oh wait
