Tesla SA battery already 1/3 paid first year
Sep 30th, 2018 at 8:54am

https://cleantechnica.com/2018/09/27/1st-year-income-from-tesla-battery-in-south...

Lots of opponents of battery storage for electricity that has been generated by wind, solar, and other renewables like to focus on how much those systems cost. Take the Hornsdale battery installed by Tesla last year in South Australia. It cost $66 million, and to hear some folks in Australia tell it, that money will place a huge burden on local utility customers forever. They conveniently forget to mention that the battery is a source of income to Neoen, the French company that owns it and the adjacent wind farm.
According to The Guardian, Neoen will recover more than one third of the $66 million cost of the Hornsdale battery in its first year of operation. A return on investment of three years is remarkable and something that should make other utility companies sit up and take notice. The payback time for most of their generating plants and infrastructure is usually measured in decades, not a few years.
https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2018/sep/27/south-australias-tesla-batter...

SO this has stabilized the grid in SA and has been making lots of money.

If it keeps making that money in its 10 year life it will make 230million , and also 233% profit on cost, not really a tombstone.
There was so much crap about it being useless a year ago and turns out its profitable and very helpful to SA's grid Smiley

They earn income from the batteries when not required?

I wonder who pays for that?

I take your referring to the reserve on the battery the government bought to ensure the grid stays up ?
The same as any peaker plant but a lot less to use ? Wink Wink

yes but it is only used when the power drops.

Perhaps. You would need to provide figures to prove that.

Where was it ever said that SA had an unstable grid and what difference would a few hundred megawatts of batteries make.

That's what the batteries were for to cater for the intermittence of solar and wind plus other power dropouts.

"There are a range of methods and technologies to store energy. This can include batteries, flywheels, compressed air, thermal and pumped hydro. Learn more about energy storage.

Coupling energy storage with renewable energy provides stability services and emergency back-up power if a shortfall in energy is predicted. This helps overcome intermittent power generation (i.e. solar power is only generated when the sun shines), and can provide energy when it is needed."

http://www.renewablessa.sa.gov.au/topic/large-scale-generation-storage/energy-st...

If the SA Government says it, I guess it is true.

I'm calling BS, this whole thing was contrived after the HV transmission lines were blown flat by freak storms in SA, show me where SA ever had any stability problems before that, or even now.
I don't mind batteries but don't sell them as a fix it for a problem that never was.

Since the interconnector failed Hazlewood has closed. Also the transmission line/wind farm failure. That puts extra stresses on the grid.

I am not selling them as a "fix"; as you pointed out there is too little backup to provide a solution for long term downtime.

The grid will do just fine without a couple of AAA rechargeable batteries in line, wind solar and all the other renewables are providing much cleaner electricity.

"Industry analyst Giles Parkinson, who runs renewable advocacy website Renew Economy, said the figure was within expectations."

""The information that was released by Neoen a couple of days ago… makes it very clear the previous government's implementation and delivery of the battery was incredibly messy and overly expensive," Energy Minister Dan van Holst Pellekaan told ABC Radio Adelaide.

"It actually costs taxpayers' money. There's a cost of $4-5 million a year to have the battery in place.

"There are more costs than that involved.

"The government of the day before the last election did not share all of the costs and all of the information."

However, Giles Parkinson said the battery was on track to "make revenues of about $25-26 million in its first year".

"We don't know what the profit margin of that is but we can probably estimate it's a fair profit margin," he said."

Is that from renewables, fossil fuel electricity or what? You carefully don't say. I would expect there would be a mix. Although if in SA it is now 6 o'clock so solar power is virtually non-existent.

In WA we have limited renewables.  Wink

Its a mix and it has to be for now, I am probably getting a lot of my power from the windy mills on Yorke Peninsular at the moment, you also would be benefiting from this if you are on the main grid.

You do realise that the eastern states grid doesn't extend this far? What price to add those thousand of KM?

Today's wind energy Current about 20% capacity for SA.

https://anero.id/energy/wind-energy

out of 1786MW nameplate capacity.

I do realize that and it cant be done, WA has many renewable options to stand alone, go ask the Fremantle Doctor for a fix, and yes 20% of the power coming from wind in SA right now is something WA could aspire to.

Yes, so that we don't kill off every single life form on this planet and earth ends up looking like mars well before it should. And it does make economic sense.

You do know the difference between the gravity on Mars and on Earth?  Wink

And of course with Temperatures of -81F there is no sign of runaway global warming. Grin Grin Grin

If CO2 were the control knob of global warming shouldn't it be warmer on Mars?

As this planet starts to cook and the runaway effect kicks in the atmosphere wont last long, we are doomed unless WA gets onboard.
I personally think we have already gone past the tipping point and humans will not last another thousand years.

Don. Perhaps you need to expand on this. what was the failure? Seeing as you seem to know perhaps you can enlighten us all.

Perhaps you think gravity has no effect on temperature?

Please show where runaway global warming affected the earth in the past when CO2 levels were at about 7,000ppm, not the current 400 odd ppm.

My inferred point was that Earth will be as unlivable as Mars before to long. Didn't Mars have an atmosphere once'
Spewing crap into the atmosphere by burning fossil fuel for the last 200yrs has probably already set us up for destruction, the effects are already being seen, even the ocean levels are rising, maybe that's because of all the crap we are spewing into them as well.
I wonder if its safe to go out in Beijing without a mask today.
Renewables are catching on and thank puck for that, well everywhere but in WA so it would seem.

If that is the point perhaps you can refer us to a causal mechanism.

Solar wind? Ultraviolet rays? Doesn't say anything about a future earth. And only "may have".

Spewing crap into the atmosphere by burning fossil fuel for the last 200yrs has probably already set us up for destruction, the effects are already being seen, even the ocean levels are rising, maybe that's because of all the crap we are spewing into them as well.

You do know oceans have been rising since the last Ice Age. Satellite snapshots of SLR are not really good. TOPIX, and the Jason series of satellites had an accuracy of more than 32mm. yet somehow they can infer an SLR of 3mm?

And yet China gets a free pass to contribute to CO2 levels until 2030 at least.

If that is the point perhaps you can refer us to a causal mechanism.

I like the words "casual mechanism", rippa, I had not heard that one before.
Just to get it straight, are you for or against renewables and do you think this planet is in trouble, without any pie charts bar graphs or squiggles if you can.

Without reading the 400 page document in your link can you tell me if these batteries are putting out any electricity or do they just sit there for 25yrs holding charge and then blow up.

perhaps you have heard of "causal" mechanism? you know something that causes something else to happen.

I am for renewables small scale. They are too intermittent for large scale..

Ah. I see you don't like data, but prefer gut feel. I prefer data and that supports my view  that the planet is not in trouble.

If you support renewables at all you should support them all the way in as many forms as they come to reduce intermittence. There should be wind and solar power all the way from Esperance to half way up the West coast and beyond to start with, although that would probably give you to much electricity and you wouldn't know what to do with it. Put it into batteries and truck it to SA, apparently there is a stability problem here.

Ah yes. Are these the cheap renewables that cost more in subsidies than fossil fuel generation?

And have you added the cost of the battery storage into the renewables cost? Realistically that has to be added to the renewables cost.

Small communities where there are no large current draws can be run off a mixture of renewables and battery. Large communities can't. The cost of batteries is to expensive.

I just had a quick look. Couldn't find even one where you said you don't care about CO2. How sad.

like how you are so concerned with the extinction of the yellow bellied parrot chopped up by windmill blades but turn a blind eye to the countless number of species that have become extinct due to global temperature increases Cheesy LOL

Perhaps you can point us to the peer-reviewed paper that talks about these species extinctions?

You surely can't be talking about the statistical study that basically said based on the number of extinctions we know about; multiplied by the number of species we know nothing about, that the number was huge?

Of course if memory serves it didn't lay the blame solely on global warming, so it must have been another.

You do know animal species can move if the climate changes? Plant species can move if the climate changes?
