Study warns of looming runaway global warming

There is a huge risk of positive feedback causing further temperature rises.

It's already happening with the melting of subarctic peat and warmer seas causing release of methane from hydrates in the sea.

Bobby will be apoplectic when he sees this claim.

Between global warming and plastic pollution of the sea, the earth is doomed.

The current Northern Hemisphere heat waves are a portent of what is to come.

Even if every country that signed on to the Paris climate agreement meets its obligations under the pact and limits the global temperature increase to 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit, runaway global warming could still be a threat, the newspaper reports. ...

We've already entered the grand solar minimum.
What happened in Portugal is a one off event.
What about the record cold events all over the world
in the last 2 years?

This warming is anthropogenic and the rate of warming is too fast for plants and animals to adapt. They can migrate/colonise areas of higher altitudes or latitudes but that can only go so far.

With the permafrost thawing and both poles melting and sea level rise accelerating it is beyond dispute that the globe is warming.

Only questions are how to reduce emissions, how to remove CO2 from the atmosphere, how to adapt and how to mitigate.

Yes. It varies doesn't it?

We had similar rates of change before.

And we had the hiatus.

"Temperature data for the period 1860-1880 are more uncertain, because of sparser coverage, than for later periods in the 20th Century. The 1860-1880 period is also only 21 years in length. As for the two periods 1910-40 and 1975-1998 the warming rates are not statistically significantly different (see numbers below).

I have also included the trend over the period 1975 to 2009, which has a very similar trend to the period 1975-1998.

So, in answer to the question, the warming rates for all 4 periods are similar and not statistically significantly different from each other.

Here are the trends and significances for each period:
