At the beginning of this decade - good rains ended a fourteen year drought, that covered most of Victoria
The Mallee region is STILL in drought

Until the drought ended - it was estimated Melbourne's taps would run dry, within six months
This "worst case scenario" has become a reality for Capetown, South Africa
Water is being shipped in, by the tanker load
It is being rationed at 30 litres per person - per day
Capetown is scrambling to build a number of de-sal plants - ASAP

I don't want to see this type of national disaster in Australia
The Melbourne catchment area has recently showed all the signs of entering into ANOTHER drought - which may well be longer than the last

Living on a rural property, I look after my own water supply matters
But I don't object to my thirty cents a day - as an insurance - to guarantee water supply in my home state

Isn’t that $100 a year , for 6.5 million ppl, Vic has about 6 million including kids and pensioners

... as I stated - 30 cents a DAY, per Victorian

Is this too high a price to pay too guarantee water continues to flow through your household taps ?
And this is not a flat rate for all
It's an AVERAGE

Victorians have been paying this "insurance premium" for many years, yet STILL remain one of - if not the - most financially healthy state in the nation

And how do you collect your water ration - if you-re a pensioner who doesn't drive a car ?

It's possible that unusual droughts and global warming aren't the sole reasons for having a de-sal plant.

Water contamination would be a fairly simple and devastating method if we were to be attacked.

We have an army that we don't (shouldn't) want to use, and that of course costs a fortune.
Think of it as part of our defense force, then you may think differently.

Interesting theory Amadd, but if that ever happened - wouldn't they blow up the plants also? They are sitting targets.

We would have been better off giving more protection to our natural underground water storage and even building underground storage from surface run off for emergencies.

These desalination plants chew up dolphins, dugongs etc - not to mention billions of dollars and then sit idle.
