I think if we continue with the big population ideas of
all the politicians - where we'll have 50 million people by 2050
then eventually we'll need extra water - droughts or not.

Also - Australia is a land of droughts and flooding rains.
We will have a long drought sooner or later.
The desal plants will get used one day.
It's just a pity that they cost so much even when left sitting idle.

What annoys me is that a North South pipe line was never built
in all our history.
Trillions of litres of water falls on the Northern territory every rainy season and
simply washes out to sea.
If we only we could harvest that water & send it south via a gigantic
pipeline pumped by solar powered pumps then we'd have more than enough water
for all the cities & even the farmers.
We'd have more water than we'd know what to do with.

The politicians like immigrants to come here and to be used as bank fodder so they can feed their fake services economy with borrowed money. It saves the government having to borrow the money. Instead just tax idiot migrants
who borrow money !!

Yes Nail,
the overpopulation of Australia has to be considered in a proper debate -
the one the Dick Smith tried to have.

the pollies don't want the debate because they are using mass immigration to fuel their fake services credit card economy.

Build something that future-proofs the nation, get bagged out because at the moment its not needed.

They will 'fall into the  swamp' long before they will ever be needed. Kiss that money good bye and hope we didn't need it for something like hospitals, education and health. ohh wait we do.

Guess that means no funding for Border Force or defence.

One of my favourite wastes was the 3rd runway. we had a decade of propaganda telling us how much we needed a third runway without ever being told that the day number 3 opened number 2 would be closed.

If you need a desal then build one, if you don't what is the point of having it rust away in the corner of your city costing hundreds of million per year just in case?

Yes what a great idea - get the water 3 years after you need it. But then 3 years later you don't need it anymore.

This is exactly why we have one now. We needed it when building started.

Hey they have done exactly what you suggested ???

Yeah our current dam and most of the rest of Australia has at least three years of water.

Maybe you should look at fixing that problem first before build a desal that costs hundreds of millions just to sit there and fall apart. Believe it or not dams are useful for preventing your population from getting thirsty.

Jeez just have a look at the half a dozen or so white elephants we have parked up all around Australia and tell me truly if you think that was a good idea to waste all that money for absolutely no return.

I look at this from a different perspective.

Perth would be totally stuffed without the desal plants.

Our catchment dams are all but useless, groundwater is not never ending, it to will suffer from lack of rain.

So Perth got it right building the desals.

Forget which ever shade of government is in power making decisions, its a gamble to build or not to build.

We dont want to be like Cape Town and have severe water restrictions as they rush to build desal plants.

So Perth got it right Cape Town got it wrong,, it could be next season when the desal is required and it will be there.
