If we only learn one thing about Thorium look at this graph:

Most of the Uranium in the world is the

BLUE

circle.
Only 0.7% of it is useful - yes - that tiny

RED

sliver on the graph.
U235 is as rare as platinum.

However the

GREEN

circles represent the amount
of Thorium in the world
that can be made to fission and produce energy.
Thorium is abundant and cheap.
It's only very weakly radioactive.
You could have a brick of it on your coffee table at home and it wouldn't hurt you.

The problem is that Thorium reactors poison their own reaction.
The molten salt has to be cleaned of pollutants or it will stop working.
That requires a lot of high tech industrial extraction of multi element radioactive compounds.
That is no small task & is the most likely reason that we've seen nothing
yet on a true industrial scale.

The advantage is that Thorium reactors poison their own reaction.
That way they are walk away safe not like Chernobyl or Fukushima
which will cause problems for the next 1 million years.

Most modern reactors are like that, Chernobyl and Fukushima were old tech and there were other problems.

I think fission is old hat, to be honest. Fusion will likely become mainstream, certainly in the next 2 decades. If it can be scaled down:

Every house makes its own electricity

Every car is electrical, a glass of water powers it for 20 years—e=mc² after all.

The fact remains—there are no thorium reactors in commercial use. I think Booby found an article about it and thinks it is fabulous. And so it is—a fable. Fusion is the power of the future, not dirty fission.
