Arctic warming brings freak weather

A freak warming around the North Pole is sending a blast of Arctic cold over Europe in a sign of "wacky" weather that may happen more often with man-made global warming.

Scientists say the northern tip of Greenland has had a record-smashing 61 hours of temperatures above freezing so far this year, linked to a rare retreat of sea ice in the Arctic winter darkness.

Arctic Ocean sea ice is at a record low for late February, at 14.1 million square kilometres. That is about a million square kilometres less than normal, or roughly the size of Egypt.

Around the entire Arctic region, temperatures are now about 20C above normal, at minus 8C.

The World Meteorological Organisation says the chill in Europe is caused by a "sudden stratospheric warming" above the North Pole that led to a split in the polar vortex, a cold area of air above the Arctic that spilled cold south.

Warm Arctic pushes cold blasts over Europe.

Arctic scientists are poring over data coming in from the vast, normally frozen region, after the North Pole's version of a heat wave swept across the area for the past week. Not only was the region near the North Pole the warmest it has been during the month of February since at least the 1950s, but one of the northernmost land-based weather stations, known as Cape Morris Jesup, exceeded the freezing mark on an unprecedented nine separate days during the month.

On Feb. 25, that weather station remained above freezing for about 24 hours, which is virtually unheard of during February, when there is no sunlight reaching the ground there. Arctic sea ice in the Bering Sea and to the north of Greenland actually declined during February, a time when sea ice usually expands toward its seasonal maximum in early to mid-March.

In Greenland, monitoring stations registered unprecedented warmth at the top of the world's largest island.

The Danish Meteorological Institute recorded earlier this week the mercury had edged above freezing at Cape Morris Jesup in Greenland, the northernmost weather station in the world.

In Utqiagvik, Alaska, the northernmost city in the US, temperatures reached a record high of -1C, some 22C warmer than the average for the year.

Other parts of the polar region off the northern coast of Greenland have seen temperatures 30C higher than normal for February.

All this comes despite the fact that large parts of the Arctic Circle are currently trapped in perpetual darkness, with the sun not set to rise again until March.

“Cape Morris Jesup in Greenland has been above freezing nearly all day. How weird is that?” tweeted Robert Rohde, lead scientist at non-profit climate monitoring organisation Berkeley Earth.

“Well it’s Arctic winter. The sun set in October and won’t be seen again until March. Perpetual night, but still above freezing.”

It is merely a part of a transfer mechanism.
