Grendel alone uses this term here and it seems he means it is a negative thing.  Can anyone tell me why.  What is the 'opposite' term?

I'm a progressive lefty, or I was before the left went totally crazy, but I'm not a loon, the left has been hijacked largely by overly PC nutcases. That's easy Soren, if it wasn't for progress you conservatives would still be in the trees. Progress is a good thing. Seeking progressive change to make life a better place for all is what we(I) want. New tools, new ideas like democracy, this is progress and should never stop.

Back to your sensible post - yes when the left and right is balanced out they satisfy the Feast and Famine Variable, which is a critical part of our psychological makeup, albeit very deep in the human mind

The introduction of leftwing progressive politics which you say has hijacked the "normal" left, let's call it, has thrown the Feast and Famine Variable out of balance and it's sustaining that lopsidedness. It's a dangerous position for the world to be in, regardless of who thinks that leftwing progressiveness (including PC) is right and proper

The truth is that "left" and "right" politics must always be balanced. Those who oppose leftwing progressives, wittingly or unwittingly are working to balance things out. It's the law of the Feast and Famine Variable. Hitler tried manipulating it, only to shoot himself through failure. How many others tried and failed?

It is certainly true that the Left have been captured by a new breed. The best, but not the only example is the USA.
The Dems growing forward from the late 19th century were a socialist-oriented party whose constituency was the blue collar working class people in the main: the auto workers, the steelworkers, the coal workers & so on. But since about 3-4 decades ago that has all changed and they are now the party of the professional/managerial elites who have been traduced into every batwing nonsense in existence and it gets worse by the day.

A book I could recommend to you is "Listen Liberal" by Thomas Frank.
