Hobart weather: Summer snow shocks Tassie

JUST two days after the state sweltered through blistering heat, snow has been falling on Tasmania’s higher peaks.

The Great Lake Hotel has posted photos of snow falling at the Central Highlands pub this morning and the Bureau of Meteorology has reported snow above 900m.

Parts of the state suffered through temperatures as high as 40C just two days ago but the weather has turned suddenly.

The BOM has issued a bushwalkers alert saying snow as low as 900m is possible during this morning.

These hazardous conditions are expected to occur in parts of the Central Plateau forecast district, the warning says.

Hobart can expect 17C today with showers clearing but at it was just 8.4C at 5.30am with an apparent temperature of 5.3C. On Mt Wellington/kunanyi it was -0.9C at 7am with an apparent temperature of -12C. There was a dusting of snow on the mountain visible from the city.

Last year I got snow a week before Xmas in Tassie.

Mechanic, you might want to learn the difference between local weather and global climate

When it is hot the alarmists say "look at climate change is doing", when it is cold it is merely weather.

a rare event getting summer snow in Tasmania but its been getting more regular over the past few years.. even down to sea level...

people like al gore and Flannery said that our children wont even get to see snow and wont know what it is...

Again you are confusing global climate with local weather events.

There is no evidence to suggest that summer snow is getting more frequent and there is no evidence that it has occurred down to sea level. The latest event involved snow above 900m altitude.

Dear Barnacle,
I think with global warming people were not expecting snow in summer - that's all.

Ahhh, instead of reading the Tele, what about some peer reviewed evidence lee?
