Extremist is one of those terms adopted by the Progressive Left media. Its a Western euphemism to avoid saying Muslim. Al Qaeda translates as something like "the base," or "the foundation." They consider themselves to be Muzlims and the Koran supports that claim. If you wish to call the extremists, it is your, Western idea, not theirs.
Other politically correct terms used to avoid saying Muzlim include: terrorist, fundamentalist, insurgent, and militant.
