Why do you care so much about how other people look?

Live and let live, Herbert.

Live and let live - yes, but not when it's an immigrant community that dresses its women like Aliens so as to better ensure their womenfolk don't have any meaningful communication with the locals.

Why don't you care about their isolation behind a black face-cover?

It's not my responsibility or yours to care. It's the individual's responsibility.

Ok but where do you draw the line?

What are the comfort and cultural expectations of a society of individuals in Australia?

And why should anyone feel 'confronted by a woman covering her face?

How long's a piece of string? Social values are always in flux in one direction or the other, sometimes becoming conservative and formal, and at other times loosening up to be more relaxed and liberal, but despite this ebb and flow some staples remain unchanged as the bedrock of our Judaeo-Christian heritage.

Regardless of the times, anti-social behaviour is anathema to the good order and cohesion of a community, and so a full-face covering has the public view the wearer as untrustworthy, anti-social, unreliable, deceitful, exclusionary, not a team player, hostile to associating with her fellow citizens, does not want to be identified, etc etc. In other words, someone who is a foreign entity to the degree she does not have our best interests at heart.

So long as they choose to walk among us as fellow citizens they owe us the respect and the courtesy of dressing within the parameters of our social values and expectations.

I wouldn't be allowed to shop at my local Supermarket or walk around the streets in a budgie-smuggler and bare feet, and in just the same way is it inappropriate and an abuse of our cultural expectations that these knuckle-dragging religious Neanderthals should cover their faces in anonymous bondage while out-and-about among us.

A beachside suburb? ~ I'll give you that, but not in one of the Sydney 'Burbs far from the pounding surf.

'Dress Code' imperatives would soon kick in and find you being told to 'dress appropriately' as there are ladies present ... in the Supermarket ... in the bank queue ... in the restaurant ... in the Shopping Mall ... in the library ...

Whatever.

You're talking about exposing the body, not covering it.

Two different things.

Let people cover up as much as they want.

In this country, it's a very sensible thing to do.

So why dont you go about in a burqa if it's  so sensible 'In this country'?

How do you know? The person under that head scarf could be an accountant or a lawyer? They could be volunteering for their community.

We're talking cultural expectations here, whether that's covering up or stripping down inappropriately.

I wear different clothing to protect myself from the sun.

A burka doesn't appeal to me, however, that doesn't mean I have any right to stop others from wearing one if that's what they want.

Each to their own.

Yes.

People are expected to cover up their private parts in our culture.

Seems to me that's exactly what they're doing.

Yes, sorry. The person under the burqa or niqab?

Well said, Greggy. I don't approve of it, but I won't stop any person from wearing it.

A Nazi uniform?

A KKK outfit?

Each to their own?

How about Shia in the local park cutting themselves into a bloody mess with blades on chains?

Each to their own?

Not your business?

Cultural relativity?

Don't be a bigot and an Islamophobe?
