People Struggling To Keep The Light On

Record energy prices contribute to inequality
30 August 2017
ACTU

The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) has today called for the Turnbull Government to combat the rising cost of power by standing up to the excessive corporate power in the privatised energy market.

A new report today reveals private energy companies are playing the system to drive up prices and profits.

Power costs have increased by over 200 per cent in recent years; energy companies have racked in massive profits and wages and pensions have flat-lined.   Sad

Quotes attributable to ACTU President Ged Kearney:

“The privatised energy market is broken. And while the Turnbull Government fumbles with careless fixes, people are struggling to keep the lights on in their homes.”

“Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is leading a divided government and is unable, or unwilling, to take the action people need to bring down energy prices.”

“Power prices have tripled since the Abbott-Turnbull Government scrapped the carbon price.”

“The big power companies are out of control. They are earning billions per year off the backs of ordinary people, while paying little or no tax.”   Sad

“Prime Minister Turnbull could make the big energy companies pay their taxes. He could introduce a clean energy target. But we have lost confidence that he can.”

“Record high energy prices are contributing to inequality. When workers’ pay has flat lined, company profits are soaring, and the cost of everything is going up. People are struggling to afford to survive.”

“Working people need a pay rise. They need to get paid their superannuation. They need a government who can manage the energy market. They need a government that is there to help them.”

“But the Government is actually making things harder. Cutting penalty rates, cutting corporate tax rates, refusing to crack down on corporate tax evasion, and attacking working people’s unions’ all make inequality worse for the entire country.”   Sad

“The Turnbull Government is in the pocket of big business and is too weak to stand up to the big energy companies.”

Power was privatized by governments because they said it would be CHEAPER for the consumer.

But in reality record power price increases followed it.

What gives?? Where's my refund then?!

I'd be curious to see just how many minister involved in the privatisation of the energy grid were either gifted shares after leaving public office, or given a job with the company or one of it's subsidiaries

thecurioudsmail....When that snake in the grass Mike Baird made sweeping statements that power would be cheaper once privatised, I almost fell out of my chair with the crap that was coming from his mouth

In the following NSW  State election the public acted like stupid bloody lemmings and he landslided in

And now we have that other lying Liberal sh.tpile Berejiklian following suit

Seriously what did the Public expect..to be told the truth? Give me a freaking break

So if BOTH lots are lying bastards, who and how are they held accountable???

Here in Qld both parties privatized, and nothing privatized became cheaper.

The next Qld election is within 6 months, I think. The LNP you wouldn't trust to run a pub raffle (they'd try to rig it), and 2 flies have more brains than Palaszczuk, and not exactly honest either, so who you vote for doesn't matter!

The unions don't have a fukkin clue, Andrews is using taxpayers money to subsidise renewables he is pushing his state to be like SA which has the worlds highest electricity prices and the most unreliable supply thanks to renewable idiocy.

Quote:
Daniel Andrews' low energy Victorian RET power play

Victoria's Daniel Andrews refuses to heed the lessons of his fellow Labor left government in South Australia by announcing an ambitious plan to ensure that 40 per cent of the state's electricity will be generated from renewables such as solar and wind in only seven years. Mr Andrews is ratcheting it up a notch by proposing to enshrine this target in law. Like something out of the ABC television satire Utopia, he promises that this will "drive down prices, attract billions of dollars of investment and create thousands of local jobs". To try to reach his mandatory target, Mr Andrews will adopt a Tony Abbott-style direct action policy to use taxpayers' money to directly subsidise renewables projects from the budget.

It doesn't get much better in Qld with labor with government owned electricity reaping record profits, why are the unions silent about this-

In several states consumers are likely to be paying dearly for exceptional profits reaped by power network operators

Your spiralling electricity bill is due to many factors, including recent power plant closures, gas shortages and ageing generation plants, but in several states there’s a fair chance consumers also pay dearly for huge profits reaped by power network operators.

Possibly the best example is Queensland where state government-owned monopoly electricity suppliers, Powerlink, Energex and Ergon Energy rake in returns well above those achieved by leading companies listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX).
For example, in the past 15 years the state’s ownership stake in Powerlink has realised rises in shareholder equity value and dividend returns worth 23 times more than those achieved by blue chip construction company, Lend Lease, and 10.5 times more than minerals and resources giant, BHP Billiton.

The forum dole bludger should get an education and a job, Senator David Leyonhjelm says the government should drop GST on electricity, does anyone think our bloated government will drop any taxes?

You got told competition would bring lower prices , it hasn't , now that the likes of Hazelwood power have closed what did you think was going to happen with power prices and particularly investment when the fed government did a complete 180 with energy policy , the carbon tax was axed , and it cost us all dearly

Competition does allow you to choose which power company to use, I go for the cheapest when you have a monopoly you have to pay what they charge.

Prices have gone up with the governments feed in Tariffs for solar, when the government dictates the feed in tariff for solar the power companies have to pay it which means those without solar have been subsidising those with solar, the government raised the price on it they told the power companies what the rate would be the.The power companies bought back power at the same rate they sold it before the government jacked up the prices.

In SA which has the most expensive power they have a 44 cent feed in tariff in place until 2028 is it any wonder they have the most expensive power since the government introduced this idiocy.

The government should not have stuck it's nose in telling the power companies to pay these absurd feed in tariffs, this is the price we are all paying thanks to the renewable idiocy

Of course the economic illiterate dim witted socialist left ignore the government interference with power companies pushing the renewable idiocy which raised prices. Grin Grin Grin Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Grin Grin Grin

SA dependency on gas is their problem for power prices , that could be easily fixed with a gas guarantee from WA as an example , it's easier for you to blame solar , my feed in is 7.315 c per kWh , synergy then sells it back to me for 26-27c per kWh, I am subsidizing my own power
