Electric cars to be cheapest option by 2027?
Aug 23rd, 2017 at 10:37am

Skeptical Science thinks so:

Quote:
Race to be Cheapest

The number of electric hybrid and electric vehicles (EV’s) on our roads is presently constrained by their price which makes them more expensive than many ICE vehicles, primarily due to the cost of their batteries, the limited range they can be driven on a single charge and, to a lesser extent, the time they take to recharge. However, recent and on-going advances in technology continue to address these issues with the result that the purchase price of EV’s are destined to become highly competitive and, in less than a decade, cheaper than many ICE vehicles.

Batteries are the most expensive component in an EV so the price of these vehicles is largely dependent on battery costs falling, on their ability to store electricity rising – as well as on growth in uptake of EV’s by end users. Battery costs have fallen by more than 80% over the last 8 years while their energy density has increased the range of some EV’s from less than 100 km to around 400 km over the same period. These developments are being driven by competitive demand for improved EV’s and the growing need of solar and wind generators for greater storage capacity.

...

For cross country trips I doubt EVs will ever be feasible unless small fusion reactors become possible. For commuting to and from work, the shops etc? If cheap enough will be perfectly feasible and they should be cheap enough before long.

In 20 years when EVs are common? Less smog/pollution, much less noise in cities etc. Sounds great!

You didn’t see the graph of battery costs?

Or that range has increased from 100 to 400Km?

Do you have to smear your shitstained arse over EVERY thread?

Electric cars will not be anything in Australia until everybody who wants a vehicle can afford electric, and the country has thousands of charging points (which will cost many millions of dollars), and that will be in fifty or more years time possibly....... Roll Eyes

Inside of 20 years EVs will be commonplace.

Oh dear. JM thinks every body lives within 400km of the city, so every home can have one. Grin Grin

This is you dragging your shitstained arse across a thread.

I did say they would not be good for interstate travel, fine for the normal commute.

You do not debate, you try and cover up interesting posts because you cannot stand people honestly debating environmental matters: they might raise the subject of AGW.

Then again, by 2027 that may have changed. I can’t drive to Melbourne from Adelaide on one tank of petrol either.

How about intrastate travel? Wink

You need a diesel. Mine would do 654Km. Wink

So you can’t drive from Adelaide to Melbourne on one tank of fuel either.

Not making a good case against the ever improving, ever cheaper EVs.

Sorry . I was misquoting

"Distance between Melbourne and Adelaide is 654 kilometers (406 miles).
Driving distance from Melbourne to Adelaide is 727 kilometers (452 miles)."

https://www.distancecalculator.net/from-melbourne-to-adelaide

Which is why I said 654Km, it will do 654 km. Actually the ute will do 850Km apparently.

So Solly  Wink

We need Nuclear power to run these electric cars.

Nuclear cannot be dialed back like coal or gas it runs flat out for the fuel cycle.

In the USA the Nuclear plants paid power companies to take their off peak loads, cars could be recharged at night with nuclear power.

Australia has the most expensive electricity in the world thanks to the idiots who push renewables, solar doesn't work at night and windspeed also decreases at night.

So you can just make it to Melbourne from Adelaide on a tank of gas.

How long before an EV can do that too, and more? Even now 400Km will allow a week of commuting. If you have solar panels you can recharge your car for free which is attractive.

Economics is dictating a move to renewables. A move to EVs is just starting. When there is a battery breakthrough that will just errrr accelerate.

That would need that breakthrough in battery technology I was talking about.

Battery technology is a mature technology. I can't see any great  increases.
