France to ban petrol cars by 2040

Global warming will be a problem way before 2040 so this is more of a business confidence scenario we are talking about. The idea of large momentum systems is now being addressed with due consideration.

Regulated economies need subsidies to be able to let industry with long lead times function with a view toward profit for its shareholders. By banning petrol cars in 22 years an effective subsidy is given to the electric car industry in the fact that investors now know market share is guaranteed and research and development has a realisation date.

Large momentum systems are the issue. Aircraft and formula racing are related in their technology, for instance. Electric cars are related to the whole renewable energy game and so everything changes with this announcement. Basic economics tells us that the more the level of government intervention into the marketplace makes it all the more difficult to remove it: this is the problem, yet also the power, of large momentum systems.

So, transport is not the biggest problem with regards to global warming: it's fossil fuels providing the energy to make electricity for the billions of tax paying citizens. The answer to the long lead times needed to invest in the refurbishment of the most complicated system known to man, the electricity grid, has finally been announced.

France has indeed taken the lead in the fight on climate change. France has found the way.

Obviously not much.

By 2040 Antarctica will be adding strongly to sea level rise. Florida and much of the east coast of the USA will be in trouble from the rising sea levels. Other countries will see more and deeper flood incursions.

People here are worried about North Korea. If the Himalayan ice sheets continue their retreat I predict nuclear war between India and China over access to the shrinking water supply that currently waters a quarter of the earths population.

Miami might be the first city in the advanced world that has to be abandoned but there are cities further north along the east coast deciding whether they can erect sea defences or whether they have to move to a more inland position.

Re Antarctica, it is beginning to lose net ice. If nothing is done that will accelerate. We know Greenland ice loss is accelerating.

This is all stuff that is known.
