calm down as SA is using hydrogen powered buses as they are much more convenient as can be quickly refueled like LPG.

They can make the hydrogen using the otherwise useless windymills by electrolysis.

The long recharge time is the killer for electric vehicles and, for a bus, it would take hours and hours and then the range would not be too good for such a large vehicle especially if Adelaide is hilly.

And the other killer for electric vehicles is the life of the very expensive battery and, if it is lithium, it is always a fire risk as lithium burns like crazy.

That's why lithium batteries are being banned on house walls because of the fire risk.

So hydrogen is rather attractive and is being introduced in California I seem to recall. Japan and Germany are already making hydrogen powered vehicles.

And hydrogen is extremely dangerous and hard to contain which is why you need expensive tanks made out of carbon fibre. Because it is a very small molecule it can easily leak and compromise any gas fittings !!

Lithium burns like crazy and yet the batteries are used in nearly every mobile device on the planet but of course it is only dangerous when its used in an EV Cheesy

And why bother making hydrogen ??

The time it takes to make hydrogen would probably be longer than the time it takes to charge up batteries. Whilst one bus is being charged from rooftop solar PV the other is out on the road doing it's rounds and making money for the owners. It's a no brainer and it's here today and cheap. No hydrogen plants or expensive carbon fiber hydrogen tanks operating under huge pressures Wink

And how do you recapture energy by regeneration when braking ? You need on-board storage for that Wink

LostNail is sitting in his armchair waving his arms about and getting flustered as he reaches the end of his tether and his treasured erroneous notions collapse into dust as they meet reality.

Reality does tend to crush fantasy. Just ask the long suffering people of Sth Aust as they pour diesel into their generators.

And the paw soal doesn't seem to grasp that hydrogen vehicles create electricity in the hydrogen converter and drive electric motors with a battery storage just like petrol powered hybrids.

Hydrogen is no more dangerous than the many LPG and LNG vehicles already running around.

Our future is hydrogen and Clean Coal. The almost useless windymills can be used to create hydrogen by electrolysis.
