Massive crack in Larsen C Ice shelf
Jun 18th, 2017 at 11:19am

A massive crack in one of Antarctica's largest ice shelves is very close to breaking point, and when it fractures it will create an iceberg bigger than Kangaroo Island.

The Larsen C ice shelf is located on the Antarctic Peninsula, which juts out towards South America.

A large fracture, which has been growing across the ice sheet for decades, has recently started to accelerate, said Sue Cook, a glaciologist from the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Cooperative Research Centre.

According to the latest data by a team of UK scientists, the fracture ripped open by 17 kilometres in the last week of May and turned towards the ocean.

Dr Cook said the lengthening fracture was within 13 kilometres of the sea, and there was nothing to stop it fracturing.

When it breaks it will create an iceberg of 5,000 square kilometres.

Dr Cook said it was really hard to pin down exactly why this is happening.

The Antarctic Peninsula is rapidly warming, but there is no evidence to link the cracking of the ice shelf to climate change.

"In this case it is really hard to say whether it has something to do with global warming or not," Dr Cook told the World Today.

Dr Cook said once this iceberg calved, the front of the shelf would have moved back to the furthest point that's ever been recorded.

"So that implies that there is a process that is causing it to move more ice than it has in the past," she said.

LATEST UPDATE

Any day now, one of the world’s biggest icebergs is expected to break from Antarctica’s massive Larsen C ice shelf and float off in the Southern Ocean.

The European Space Agency issued a press release Wednesday, offering updates on the cracking shelf obtained from its CrySat satellite, which measures and monitors polar ice.

The deep crack has extended over the course of 100 miles now and, according to the ESA, only three miles separate the Larsen C crack from open water.

The Larsen C ice shelf was next in line after the collapse of Larsen A in 1995 and Larsen B in 2002, both situated north of Larsen C.

And when the ice shelves are gone the land based glaciers that reach sea level will be affected by the warmer waters that will be at the base of the glaciers. Lots more icebergs will be calved, float off and melt—and raise sea levels at an ever–faster rate.

It happened with Greenland and Greenland is now losing HUGE amounts of ice.

You talking about all of Greenland or just the surface of the ice sheet??

Were you not cracking what you think are jokes about polar bears vacationing in the south, i.e. in that tight packed sea ice off Newfoundland that used to be on Greenland?

Being witty—you thought. The rest of us thought you were being halfwitty  Wink You were just reminding us of the HUGE amount of ice Greenland had lost.

The Larsen Crack....

Quote:
What does this all mean for the rest of the planet? Unfortunately, it's hard to say.

According to the British Antarctic Survey, which works with MIDAS,
scientists don't really know whether the crack in Larsen C has anything to do with climate change,
although there is some evidence that the ice shelf has become thinner because of it.

"I doubt it will ever be possible to link this rift to climate change," says Luckman. "What we CAN say is that ice-shelves seem in general to be responding to a warmer climate. For Larsen C, all I would say is that climate warming (ocean or atmosphere) cannot be directly linked to the rift, but probably won't have hindered its growth."

It's normal for cracks to form in ice shelves and calve to produce icebergs, as part of a cyclical process in which the shelves, fed by glaciers and ice streams from the continent's interior, gradually advance, break and then slowly regenerate.

"Calving from all Antarctic ice shelves occurs periodically,"
H. Jay Zwally, a senior research scientist at NASA, explains via email. "Some calving is in small icebergs and less frequently is in large tabular icebergs as the one about to calve from Larsen C. This calving occurs to balance the continuous flow of ice into the shelves over the grounding line — i.e. the ground ice sheet on upstream side and floating ice shelf on the ocean-ward side."

He notes that such calving "occurs at decadal intervals without climate change to make it happen."

Greenland used to have iceshelves like Antarctica does. The OMG program showed that once the ice shelves went the loss of ice from Greenland glaciers accelerated. Looks like this is starting to happen to Antarctica.

Quote:
.............A TRILLION-tonne iceberg, one of the largest ever recorded, has snapped off the West Antarctic ice shelf, scientists have confirmed.

Researches have been monitoring the steadily growing crack in the Larsen C Ice Shelf for years. Swansea University finally announced on Wednesday that the rift had completed its path through the ice, causing a 5,800-square kilometre section of the shelf to snap off.

The massive ice cube is twice the size of the Australian Capital Territory, four times the size of London and twice the size of Luxembourg. It is about 350 metres thick.

“The iceberg weighs more than a trillion tonnes, but it was already floating before it calved away so has no immediate impact on sea level,” the research team said. It will likely be named A68.

With the calving, the Larsen C ice shelf lost more than 12 per cent of its total surface area.

Icebergs calving from Antarctica are a regular occurrence. But given its enormous size, the latest berg will be closely watched as it travels, for any potential risk to shipping traffic.

The calving may have heightened the risk of the remaining ice shelf disintegrating, the Swansea team said.

Yep - just saw it on the Antarctic FB page.
Massive 6,000 square kms.

I doubt it will float out beyond the Southern Gyre.

Yup:

Quote:
The Larsen A and B ice shelves, which were situated further north on the Antarctic Peninsula, collapsed in 1995 and 2002, respectively.

“This resulted in the dramatic acceleration of the glaciers behind them, with larger volumes of ice entering the ocean and contributing to sea-level rise,” said David Vaughan, glaciologist and director of science at British Antarctic Survey.

“If Larsen C now starts to retreat significantly and eventually collapses, then we will see another contribution to sea level rise,” he added.

Big icebergs break off Antarctica naturally, meaning scientists are not linking the rift to manmade climate change.

The ice, however, is a part of the Antarctic peninsula that has warmed fast in recent decades.

“In the ensuing months and years, the ice shelf could either gradually regrow, or may suffer further calving events which may eventually lead to collapse – opinions in the scientific community are divided,” Professor Luckman said.

“Our models say it will be less stable, but any future collapse remains years or decades away.”

http://thenewdaily.com.au/news/world/2017/07/13/huge-iceberg-breaks-off-antarcti...

Probably the melting of the rest of Larsen C will accelerate due to the warmer waters now lapping parts of Antarctica. Sea level rise will accelerate.

And Larsen C will soon be added to the iceshelves that disappeared allowing warm waters to melt glaciers where they reach sea level.

That is interesting, that Antarctica is already losing net ice. I think tho that nobody knows for sure yet.

That is what scientists working in this field were saying this morning on ABC News (formerly ABC24.)

Anybody with a brain would see that would happen. Larsen A & B are gone and the glaciers that formerly fed the shelf have accelerated now they are calving directly into the sea. The same thing happened with Greenland (Oceans Melting Greenland program.)

Just the application of common sense. Of course, rightwingers hate change and do not want to admit to reality but the situation is ice shelves are going, glaciers are accelerating and so the sea level is rising faster and faster.

Wow. Glaciers found a way around feeding directly into the sea. Smart glaciers.

You know an ice shelf is ice floating on the sea; don't you? Eventually it breaks off.

Wow. Glaciers found a way around feeding directly into the sea. Smart glaciers.

You know an ice shelf is ice floating on the sea; don't you? Eventually it breaks off.

Yes, eventually ice shelves do break off: but at what rate?

Depends a lot on the sea. Is it rough? Remember the 2012 Arctic lowest Ice ever was because of a storm.

Apparently the circulating current around Antarctica has tightened thus changing the atmospherics that intrude the Australian continent but that is all I know!

Hopefully the water hemisphere isn't changing too much or we are in big big trouble: so much that I would expect global panic by now!

The northern hemisphere will be the first port of call!

Yes we know things are changing—the belt of cyclones and anticyclones that waters the southern half of the continent is moving closer to the Pole.

Somewhere in this board, buried by Lees not wanting that to be seen, are studies showing that warmer water is reaching the Antarctic coast, probably related to Larsen A&B disappearing and not reforming and the faster pace of icemelt. Larsen C is much bigger and when the rest of it goes icemelt and consequent sea level rise will accelerate.

I have explained that it is not the null hypothesis, gave a quote out of wiki. Will repeat it, why not, need repetition for really thick, dense heads:

Quote:
In inferential statistics, the term "null hypothesis" is a general statement or default position that there is no relationship between two measured phenomena, or no association among groups.[1] Rejecting or disproving the null hypothesis—and thus concluding that there are grounds for believing that there is a relationship between two phenomena (e.g. that a potential treatment has a measurable effect)—is a central task in the modern practice of science; the field of statistics gives precise criteria for rejecting a null hypothesis.
The null hypothesis is generally assumed to be true until evidence indicates otherwise. In statistics, it is often denoted H0 (read “H-nought”, "H-null", "H-O", or "H-zero").

(wiki)

So, Lees: theory, mechanism, H1, H0 and test please.

It appears Lees has no idea about any of this.

Natural variation can be safely discarded as it was not a serious theory, just an excuse for Lees not to accept AGW.

Hello mental pygmy.

The ice shelf thinned quite a bit—see the post I made in Relationships.

Another important factor: neither Larsen A or B reformed.

I think this is the start of something not good: faster sea level rise.

No, I created it in Relationship, then Aussie locked it at my request.

I did that because this board is filled with bullshit and I wanted a few posts that would not be drowned in bullshit, deflection, obfuscation and so on.

You can discuss that post here.

So, go on, surprise me and write some high quality comments on that post.

The next post in Relationships will be a high quality post about the mechanism of AGW: the absorption/re-emission of IR.

Have a look for that tomorrow morning.

You read those few posts with anything resembling an open mind you will actually learn something relevant and interesting. That is why the clowns here won’t read it.

That stuff about shelves cracking due to weight or earth movement is kind of ridiculous:

The Larsen A & B shelves broke up and didn’t re-form.

Larson C had actually LOST weight due to warm air and ocean!

Something is happening down there, something likely caused by AGW.

Next point of concern: Thwaites Glacier.

Yes. I can see why.

"It's normal for icebergs to break off ice shelves.

"Ice shelves are constantly flowing into the ocean, losing a bit off the end," she said.

"It might not really have a big impact on the [stability of the] ice shelf."

But, she said, it could also destabilise the ice shelf causing it to quickly disintegrate."

"She said the glaciers feeding into the Larsen C ice shelf contained about 10 centimetres of global sea level equivalent, but it's very unlikely that all of that would go."

http://www.abc.net.au/news/science/2017-06-02/antarcticas-larsen-c-ice-shelf-cra...

Yep. Sounds scary. NOT.

Probably the rest of the Larsen C will break up soon, leading to an uptick in glaciers calving there, adding to sea level rise.

All this obfuscation, and it has no point anymore does it? Apart from holding back that acceptance that AGW is real.

We have learned that the Larsen C iceshelf thinned by 4m from warm air and warm waters above and below.

The bit that broke off also included part of an anchor point holding the rest of the shelf in place. With the warming above and below, with the loss of a part of an anchor point I think the rest of the ice shelf will soon follow the bit that broke off. Then the glaciers that used to end at the ice shelf will end where the warmer waters are, accelerating the iceloss from the Antarctic peninsula.

However, the Peninsula is penny ante stuff. The Thwaites Peninsula however, is far from minor.

The next post in Relationships will cover the Thwaites Peninsula.

But it DID lose four metres. It lost it due to warm air and warm water. That is the interesting thing behind the breakup of Larsen C.

From 10,000 to 20,000 years ago. The World was in an Ice-Age that obviously 'dried' the moisture out of the atmosphere and gave rise to Australia experiencing its biggest DROUGHT since the introduction of peoples to this continent. It was a drought that most likely turned a peoples here from 'living' to just 'surviving' and pretty sure brought about the 'stagnation' of an age old 'culture' that no longer blossomed.

...with all this ice melting everywhere, sure the World is getting warmer (feels too hot for me in summer  Tongue !) and the result is that it is raining more so than ever, with more moisture in the atmosphere.

Kinda fitting really, considering the immense amount of deforestation and vast tracks of lands becoming 'dust bowls' (like Wheat belts, etc) - no wonder '
Gaia'
is trying to rectify the problem and in need of a pretty good drink!
Kinda timely really, considering vast amounts of 'fresh water' have all been used up and depleted around the world as well. As they say in Russia "Bye Bye Lake Baikal"

Really piss-poor version of Winter this year.
At the most, I put on something warm just for Pre-Dawn and Post-Dusk. During the day, its as warm as Spring!

Strange how the Earth is turning into both Mars & Venus, rather than them both turning into Earth  Tongue

IT'S HAPPENED

One of the biggest icebergs on record has broken away from Antarctica, scientists have said, creating an extra hazard for ships around the continent as it breaks up.

The 1-trillion-tonne iceberg, measuring 5,800 square kilometres, calved away from the Larsen C ice shelf in Antarctica sometime between July 10 and 12, scientists at the University of Swansea and the British Antarctic Survey said.

The iceberg has been close to breaking off for a few months. Throughout the Antarctic winter, scientists monitored the progress of the rift in the ice shelf using the European Space Agency satellites.

"The iceberg is one of the largest recorded and its future progress is difficult to predict," said Adrian Luckman, professor at Swansea University and lead investigator of Project MIDAS, which has been monitoring the ice shelf for years.

"It may remain in one piece but is more likely to break into fragments. Some of the ice may remain in the area for decades, while parts of the iceberg may drift north into warmer waters," he added.

The iceberg, which is likely to be named A68, was already floating before it broke away so there is no immediate impact on sea levels, but the calving has left the Larsen C ice shelf reduced in area by more than 12 per cent.

The Larsen A and B ice shelves, which were situated further north on the Antarctic Peninsula, collapsed in 1995 and 2002, respectively.

"This resulted in the dramatic acceleration of the glaciers behind them, with larger volumes of ice entering the ocean and contributing to sea-level rise," said David Vaughan, glaciologist and director of science at British Antarctic Survey.

"If Larsen C now starts to retreat significantly and eventually collapses, then we will see another contribution to sea level rise," he added.

Big icebergs break off Antarctica naturally, meaning scientists are not linking the rift to manmade climate change.

The ice, however, is a part of the Antarctic peninsula that has warmed quickly in recent decades.

The Antarctic Peninsula luckily has only minor glaciers.

It is the rapidly warming West Antarctic with the Thwaites and adjoining glaciers that are retreating that will be the real cause of a jump in sea levels.

"Abstract:
The West Antarctic Ice Sheet overlies the West Antarctic Rift System about which, due to the comprehensive ice cover, we have only limited and sporadic knowledge of volcanic activity and its extent. Improving our understanding of subglacial volcanic activity across the province is important both for helping to constrain how volcanism and rifting may have influenced ice-sheet growth and decay over previous glacial cycles, and in light of concerns over whether enhanced geo-thermal heat fluxes and subglacial melting may contribute to instability of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. Here, we use ice-sheet bed-elevation data to locate individual conical edifices protruding upwards into the ice across West Antarctica, and we propose that these edifices represent subglacial volcanoes. We used aeromagnetic, aerogravity, satellite imagery and databases of confirmed volcanoes to support this interpretation. The overall result presented here constitutes a first inventory of West Antarctica’s subglacial volcanism. We identified 138 volcanoes, 91 of which have not previously been identified, and which are widely distributed throughout the deep basins of West Antarctica, but are especially concentrated and orientated along the >3000 km central axis of the West Antarctic Rift System."

And those volcanoes have been there for how long, Loser Lees? You think they have only just become active? The abstract does not say that.

So the heating at West Antarctica is not volcanic.

https://www.nap.edu/read/12168/chapter/10#94

I suggest you do some reading.

or

"The Thwaites glacier is one of the most rapidly changing in Antarctica. It’s been the focus of considerable attention in recent weeks, after scientists suggested that this sector of the huge West Antarctic Ice Sheet was already on route towards collapse due to warming ocean temperatures. A major collapse of this part of the ice sheet could have dire consequences worldwide, with a global sea level rise of potentially up to 1m. Some models suggest this could take place comparatively rapidly, within a few centuries.

But hidden beneath the kilometres of ice in this rapidly changing part of the continent is a largely unexplored geological feature: the West Antarctic Rift System, a strip of volcanic activity thought to extend for more than 3,000km across the Antarctic continent, provides further heat to melt the ice sheet from below."

https://theconversation.com/volcanic-rift-valley-under-antarctica-hotter-than-ex...

They tell me The Conversation is approved reading. Wink
